Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed Identification Manual is an attempt to meet the long-standing need for a reference work dealing exclusively with seed identification. The authors of this manual have brought together, for direct observation and study on a comparative basis, pictures and practical descriptions of a large and representative a collection of seeds. In accord with the visual principal, the textual part of the manual is ample illustrated with 288 figures in the form of line drawings and diagrams, and the generic descriptions are accompanied by reference to the corresponding plates. Lavishly illustrated the pictorial part of the manual, containing 824 photographic plates, showing the seeds of more than 600 plant species, is divided into three habitat classification of Framlands, Wetlands and Woodlands from various parts of the United States. The immediate aim of this manual is to help agriculturists, foresters, wildlife biologists, chemical manufacturers, agricultural experiment stations, seed testing laboratories, and others interested in the land-use programs to identify the seeds in their particular ecological fields of interest. Bearing in mind the different backgrounds of the probable readers of this manual in respect to scientific preparations and experiences, the authors have thought it best to keep the descriptions nontechnical, so far as was feasible, and thus adapt the material to a broad range of interests and skills.

Book The Woody Plant Seed Manual Part I

Download or read book The Woody Plant Seed Manual Part I written by Franklin T. Bonner and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive handbook on the seeds of trees and shrubs produced by the USDA Forest Service was USDA Misc. Pub. 654, Woody-Plant Seed Manual. The manuscript was ready for publication in 1941, but World War II delayed publication until 1948. The boom in tree planting in the 1950s and 1960s created a large demand for seeds and exposed the gaps in our knowledge concerning production and quality of seeds of woody plants in general. The 1974 Handbook proved to be very popular both in this country and abroad, leading to five printings and translations in several other languages. More than a quarter-century after its publication, however, numerous advances in tree seed technology have dictated that a new revision is needed; the result is the current volume. Part I contains information on how to get seeds and raise seedlings. Get Your Copy Now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woody-Plant Seed Manual: Miscellaneous Publication No. 654, Issued June 1948 Rom 1929 to 1939 revegetation of cut-over and burned lands and eroded soils for timber production, watershed protection, wildlife food and cover, and shelterbelt planting was undertaken on a scale never before approached in the United States. In 1929, for example, about acres were reforested. In 1939 about acres were planted, and the total acreage planted at the close of that year was about acres. Planting at the 1939 rate requires annually about 145 tons of forest seed, valued at about With more than acres in need of planting, assuming that the job can be done in the course of 25 years, this would call for the annual planting of some acres and require the use of about 600 tons of seed per year. Whereas reforestation was drastically curtailed during World War II, forest planting of large areas doubtless will figure prominently as a postwar measure.
