Cleo Being the introverted twin of a mega famous pop star is a special kind of hell—especially since it’s the stolen poems from my journal that turned my sister into a household name. I’m fine being Kennedy’s assistant, and it’s amazing to hear fans sing my words every night, but I wish I could step out of her shadow, just once. A quiet week alone at the sun-kissed Hideaway resort is exactly what I need after months on tour. I’m ready to leave behind the chaos that comes with being “Kennedy’s sister” and just be Cleo Maxwell for a while. At least I was, until Benji Prescott, the heartbreakingly handsome ex-boybander I’ve crushed on for over a decade, knocks on my villa door and asks for songwriting help, mistaking me for my sister. Benji It’s been five years since I’ve had a hit song. Five years of imposter syndrome and pressure to show my label I’m not some one-hit wonder. After taking time out of the limelight to rediscover my passion for music, I’m determined to prove everyone wrong. There’s just one thing—I can’t come up with a decent song to save my life. I came to The Hideaway seeking a cure for my creative block, but I found something—someone—even better. Kennedy Maxwell is nothing like I expected; she’s insightful, authentic, and there’s something about her that’s just so damn seductive. It’s hard to stay focused on the music when I can’t stop thinking about the dirty things I’d like to do to her… Each book in The Hideaway series is a steamy, stand-alone romance with NO cliffhanger and an HEA. Suitable for ages 18+. Come find your escape.

Book Dissonances of Modernity

Download or read book Dissonances of Modernity written by Irene Gómez-Castellano and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissonances of Modernity illuminates the ways in which music, as an artifact, a practice, and a discourse redefines established political, social, gender, and cultural conventions in Modern Spain. Using the notion of dissonance as a point of departure, the volume builds on the insightful approaches to the study of music and society offered by previous analyses in regards to the central position they give to identity as a socially and historically constructed concept, and continues their investigation on the interdependence of music and society in the Iberian Peninsula. While other serious studies of the intersections of music and literature in Spain have focused on contemporary usage, Dissonances of Modernity looks back across the centuries, seeking the role of music in the very formation of identity in the peninsula. The volume's historical horizon reaches from the nineteenth-century War of Africa to the Catalan working class revolutions and Enric Granados' central role in Catalan identity; from Francisco Barbieri's Madrid to the Wagnerian's influence in Benito Perez Galdos' prose; and from the predicaments surrounding national anthems to the use of the figure of Carmen in Francoist' cinema. This volume is a timely scholarly addition that contemplates not only a broad corpus that innovatively comprises popular and high culture--zarzuelas, choruses of industrial workers, opera, national anthems--but also their inter-dependence in the artists' creativity.

Book Musorgsky

Download or read book Musorgsky written by David Brown and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-14 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modest Musorgsky was one of the towering figures of nineteenth-century Russian music. Now, in this new volume in the Master Musicians series, David Brown gives us the first life-and-works study of Musorgsky to appear in English for over a half century. Indeed, this is the largest such study of Musorgsky to have appeared outside Russia. Brown shows how Musorgsky, though essentially an amateur with no systematic training in composition, emerged in his first opera, Boris Godunov, as a supreme musical dramatist. Indeed, in this opera, and in certain of his piano pieces in Pictures at an Exhibition, Musorgsky produced some of the most startlingly novel music of the whole nineteenth century. He was also one of the most original of all song composers, with a prodigious gift for uncovering the emotional content of a text. As Brown illuminates Musorgsky's work, he also paints a detailed portrait of the composer's life. He describes how, unlike the systematic and disciplined Tchaikovsky, Musorgsky was a fitful composer. When the inspiration was upon him, he could apply himself with superhuman intensity, as he did when composing the initial version of Boris Godunov. Sadly, Musorgsky deteriorated in his final years, suffering periods of inner turmoil, when his alcoholism would be out of control. Finally, unemployed and all but destitute, he died at age forty-two. His failure to complete his two remaining operas, Khovanshchina and Sorochintsy Fair, Brown concludes, is one of music's greatest tragedies. Written by one of the leading authorities on nineteenth-century Russian composers, Musorgsky is the finest available biography of this giant of Russian music.

Book excerpt: Makenna Wilkensen has had many names and many identities since being cast to earth and remade into a vampire. Her latest assumed identity is that of an Independent bookstore owner. It's under this guise that she meets author Gabe Anderson. Intrigued by his resistance to her supernatural allure, Makenna offers to host a book signing at her store to keep him conveniently close. Determined to have more to talk about than table placement, she decides to read his novel. This simple decision changes everything, though, because his fictional characters are all too familiar. The names may have changed, but there's no mistaking the true identity of the key players in the novel, just as there is no denying the fact that his fiction comes all too close to the hidden truth of Heaven's fallen angels.

Book Reelpolitik Ideologies in American Political Film

Download or read book Reelpolitik Ideologies in American Political Film written by Beverly Merrill Kelley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reelpolitik Ideologies in American Political Film, Beverly Merrill Kelley examines more than a century of political movie history, providing a thorough historical background for diametrically opposed political ideologies in order to facilitate debate and dialectical learning. Kelley explores 185 American political movies (categorized by ideological themes and presented in chronological order) in order to illustrate the history of film as well as the history of the specific political ideology. Each chapter includes a case study which provides an in-depth analysis of the single film that best illustrates the ideology at hand, including: The Candidate (populism), Wall Street (elitism), The Godfather (fascism), All the President's Men (anti-fascism), Patton (interventionism), and M*A*S*H (isolationism). Reelpolitik Ideologies in American Political Film establishes a paradigmatic analysis of political films that details the cyclical nature of ideological dialectic throughout American history and identifies the values, attitudes, and beliefs of the voters who choose not to affiliate with Republicans and Democrats, and who often determine the outcomes of elections. The text also includes an extensive ideological filmology spanning more than 100 years of American cinema. This study represents a bold investigation of the political and social values of American film, and is an essential text in the study of the relationship between culture and politics.

Book excerpt: Reelpolitik II moves past typical left-right political distinctions to examine political ideologies cycling through U.S. history during the '50s and '60s. These eight Cold War movies especially equipped the moviegoer with a unique vantage point to scrutinize the arms race, the Red Scare, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. They also helped audiences to observe the way film functions as a purveyor of American mythology, a megaphone to shout political messages, a metaphorical route to the emotions, a flattering mirror, an unflattering microscope, and a magic carpet ride back to the future.
