Bush's invocation of Wild West mythology was neither novel nor unusual - elected officials frequently tap into popular culture in order to mobilize public support for themselves and for their policies. The Politics of Popular Culture examines the relationship between popular culture and politics. It stresses that popular culture is politically important because it reflects and operates within broader socio-political conditions, can transport political ideas and ideologies, and is a site where identities and institutions are shaped, contested, and reproduced. Book excerpt: In the past twenty years Quebec women writers, including Aline Chamberland, Claire Dé, Suzanne Jacob, and Hélène Rioux, have created female characters who are fascinated with bold sexual actions and language, cruelty, and violence, at times culminating in infanticide and serial killing. Paula Ruth Gilbert argues that these Quebec feminist writers are "re-framing" gender. Violence and the Female Imagination explores whether these imagined women are striking out at an external other or harming themselves through acts of self-destruction and depression. Gilbert examines the degree to which women are imitating men in the outward direction of their anger and hostility and suggests that such "tough" women may be mocking men in their "macho" exploits of sexuality and violence. Book excerpt: Denys Arcand is best known outside Canada for three films that were nominated for Academy Awards for Best Foreign-Language Film: The Decline of the American Empire (1986), Jesus of Montreal (1989), and The Barbarian Invasions (2003), the last of which won the Award. Yet Arcand has been making films since the early 1960s. When he started making films, Quebec was rapidly transforming from a relatively homogeneous community, united by its Catholic faith and French language and culture, into a more fragmented modern society. The Films of Denys Arcand sheds light on how Arcand addressed the impact of these changes from the 1960s, when the long-drawn-out debate on Quebec's possible separation from the rest of Canada began, to the present, in which the traditional cultural heritage has been further fragmented by the increasing presence of diasporic communities. His career and films offer an ideal case study for exploring the contradictions and tensions that have shaped Quebec cinema and culture in a period of increasing globalization and technological change.

In those 20 years, Carlos and Myrna were my main source of information about independent world cinema. It is a great joy to see all this material gathered in a book. Carlos was a passionate researcher and, along with Myrna, an experienced reporter. Their interviews and reports on films and directors that have passed through Sundance have the mark of someone who saw everything up close. And knew how to tell it. Carlos Alberto Mattos – Film Critic When Robert Redford founded the nonprofit Sundance Institute in 1981, the intense creativity of American independent cinema in the 70’s was too distant. The Festival came to redefine the characteristics of a cinema that was becoming more conservative and less daring, as a reflection of the Reagan years. Betting on risk and dissonant and plural voices, Sundance knew how to reveal innovative directors and organize “Script Development Programs” in different parts of the world, starting with Brazil. The geopolitics of independent cinema would never be the same. Sundance marked the resumption of Brazilian Cinema after the disastrous government of President Collor. It was one of the first international festival to embrace our cinematography at that time and few critics and journalists followed this movement as closely as Carlos Augusto Brandão. With his inseparable Myrna, Carlos foresaw what was still under construction. He covered the Festival from the start, collecting precious interviews from young new-comers. I cannot remember Sundance without thinking about Carlos, his remarks and always relevant and sensitive questions, publishing stories that dimensioned the revival of Brazilian Cinema. These testimonies comprise this precious "20 Years of Independent Cinema". The interviews gathered here tell not only the story of the renaissance of independent cinema in different latitudes, but also speak of the intense passion that Carlos had for cinema.
