This book was released on 2008 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lower Falher Member comprises facies successions of wave- and storm-dominated delta complexes and strandplain settings. Both are characterized by interbedded, moderately burrowed mudstones and sandstones, passing into heterolithic intervals dominated by sporadically burrowed, stacked sandy tempestites. These pass upwards into current ripples and trough cross-stratification, capped by low-angle planar-stratified sandstones, pebbly sandstones and conglomerates. Prodeltaic intervals contain syneresis cracks, organic-rich mudstone drapes of fluid-mud origin, current and combined flow ripples, soft-sediment deformation, and carbonaceous detritus. Trace fossil suites are typified by reduced diversities and abundances of ichnogenera, lowered bioturbation intensities (BI 0-2), and a paucity of suspension-feeding structures in the tempestites. Offshore deposits contain rare fluid-mud drapes, and greater bioturbation intensities (BI 0-5), increased ichnogenera diversities, and the presence of suspension-feeding structures in sandy tempestites. These facies characteristics may be useful in identifying other deposits in the Western Interior Seaway, which have been interpreted as wave- and storm-dominated shorelines.

Book Integrated Ichnology and Sedimentology of Mixed River and Wave influenced Delta Complexes Upper Cretaceous Basal Belly River Formation Central Alberta Canada

Download or read book Integrated Ichnology and Sedimentology of Mixed River and Wave influenced Delta Complexes Upper Cretaceous Basal Belly River Formation Central Alberta Canada written by Brittan Miles Jones and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine-generated bounding discontinuities subdivide the basal Belly River cycles into 3 allomembers (D, E, and G). Detailed sedimentological and ichnological analysis of allomembers D and E of the Upper Cretaceous basal Belly River Formation (central Alberta) reveals 13 discrete facies. Sedimentary facies are grouped into 6 mappable facies associations. Depositional environments are interpreted to record a variety of marginal-marine, paralic, and coastal environments, including: river-dominated, storm-influenced deltas (FA1); storm-dominated, mixed river- and wave-influenced deltas (FA2); fluvial channels (FA3); fluvio-estuarine distributary channels (FA4); marine-influenced, lower delta plains (FA5); and delta/coastal plains (FA6). Based on the integration of data from cored intervals, multiple dip- and strike oriented cross-sections, and net-sand isopach maps; no lateral variations in facies distribution, consistent with the asymmetric delta model, are identified. Correlations indicate that the deposits of Allomember D are exclusively linked to FA1 successions, whereas the deposits of Allomember E are exclusively linked to FA2 successions.

Book Lithostratigraphy Sedimentology Paleontology Organic Petrology and Organic Geochemistry of the Middle Devonian Ashern Winnipegosis and Eyot Formations in East central Alberta and West central Saskatchewan

C. Meijer-Drees and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the Middle Devonian Elk Point Group of Alberta & Saskatchewan. The purpose of the report is to describe the onlap of the Middle Devonian strata in east central Alberta; to establish the map units used to illustrate the onlap; to show that the succession is distinctly different from that in south central Saskatchewan; and to integrate & discuss borehole information obtained from micropaleontological, organic petrological, geochemical, lithological, and sedimentological studies. After an overview of the Group's geological setting, detailed lithostratigraphic information is presented for each formation of the Group, including their regional distribution, lithology, sedimentology, paleontology, geochemistry, and stratigraphy.

Book Lithofacies Characteristics Reservoir Properties and Ichnology of the Upper Montney Member Spathian

Download or read book Lithofacies Characteristics Reservoir Properties and Ichnology of the Upper Montney Member Spathian written by Chenyang Feng and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lower Triassic Montney Formation in west-central Alberta and northeastern British Columbia has become one of the most productive reservoirs in Western Canada over the past 15 years. It is projected that it will play a leading role in satisfying Canada's energy requirements over the next 20 years. This study focuses on the Upper Montney Member (UMM), which is interpreted to represent the deposition within a wave- to storm-influenced, low-gradient, predominantly siliciclastic ramp setting. The lithology is dominated by the interbedding or interlamination of dolomitic, medium- to coarse-grained siltstone and bituminous, fine- to medium-grained siltstone, with subordinate dolomitic, very fine-grained sandstone locally occurring towards the UMM top. Seven lithofacies are identified in the UMM, comprising a conformable, shoaling-upward (coarsening-upward) sequence. Along with the measured porosity-permeability data, analyses of high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thin-section based petrography are conducted to evaluate reservoir qualities of different lithofacies. Notably, the shoreface successions of the Upper Montney are classified by the lithofacies-dependent reservoir properties using Winland porosity-permeability plots. In addition, integrating the mineralogical analyses by X-ray-diffraction (XRD) and the measured values of total organic carbon (TOC), the origin of the bitumen is investigated and the Upper Montney is inferred to be a self-sourcing reservoir system. This work also considers some ichnological attributes of the UMM to refine an understanding of environmental conditions during reservoir deposition. To do this, the ichnology of the eastern UMM, in Alberta, is compared to more distal positions in the western MMR, In British Columbia. In Alberta, trace fossils identified mainly include Phycosiphon, Teichichnus, Planolites, Cylindrichnus and Skolithos and are consistent with somewhat impoverished trace fossil assemblages associated with proximal offshore and lower shoreface settings. In British Columbia, lack of idiomorphic ichnogenera is observed in bioturbated siltstones and sandstones: this is owing in part to a lack of grainsize variabilities of the host strata. To deal with these ichnotaxonomic problematica, five ichnofossil types (Type a, b, c, d and e) are designated and interpreted ethologically. In order to investigate the ichnological variability of the shoreface successions within the Upper Montney Member in different areas, process ichnology data (bioturbation intensity, burrow diameter, bioturbation diversity, and size-diversity index) are collected and analyzed. The distinct hydrodynamic conditions and the oxygen deficiency are interpreted to be the most significant physico-chemical stresses leading to the ichnological distributions and variability.

Book Sedimentology Sequence Stratigraphy Organic Petrology Geochemistry and Palynology of Mannville Group Coals in South central Alberta

Download or read book Sedimentology Sequence Stratigraphy Organic Petrology Geochemistry and Palynology of Mannville Group Coals in South central Alberta written by Indranil Banerjee and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the sequence stratigraphic analysis of some coal seams in the Lower Cretaceous Mannville Group of Alberta is presented within a hierarchical framework of three orders of depositional sequences. The analysis is based on an integrated database of lithostratigraphy, sedimentology, palynology, organic petrology, and geochemistry. A unique aspect of this study is an emphasis on the following key stratigraphic features of coal seams in analyzing their sequence stratigraphic relations: patterns of coal-seam splits and their relation to transgressive & regressive cycles; characterizing the transgressive or regressive natures of coal seams using typical signatures in vertical changes in petrological, geochemical, and palynological parameters; and recognizing multiple transgressive & regressive cycles and subtle unconformities within a thick, regionally extensive coal seam.
