Book Sedimentology and Stratigraphy

Download or read book Sedimentology and Stratigraphy written by Gary Nichols and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-04-10 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive textbook on all aspects of sedimentology and stratigraphic principles Sedimentology and Stratigraphy introduces the reader to the subjects and provides tools for the interpretation of sediments and sedimentary rocks, covering the processes of formation, transport, and deposition of sediment and applying them to develop conceptual models for the full range of sedimentary environments, from deserts to deep seas and reefs to rivers. Different approaches to using stratigraphic principles to date and correlate strata are also considered to provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of sedimentology and stratigraphy. The 3rd edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. The chapter structure has been revised, such that there are distinct sections on geomorphology and on stratigraphy for each depositional setting. The new edition also features a new set of illustrations in full colour. Key concepts introduced in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy include: The importance of changes in plant and animal life through time and the effects on characteristics of both marine and continental sedimentary environments The distinction between modern environments and what is preserved in the sedimentary record, with coverage of glacial erosional and depositional landforms Modern desert environments and aeolian deposits in the stratigraphic record Fluvial processes including patterns of tributary and distributary channels at different scales and in different settings Written by a highly qualified author with abundant experience in the field, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy serves as a highly accessible resource for students of geology and related subjects who seek to understand the formation, characteristics, and importance of sedimentary rocks.

Book A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System Part 2

Download or read book A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System Part 2 written by T. Servais and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ordovician was one of the longest of the geological periods, characterized by major magmatic and tectonic activity, an immense biodiversification, swings in climate and sea levels, and the first Phanerozoic mass extinction. ‘A Global Synthesis of the Ordovician System’ is presented in two volumes in The Geological Society, Special Publications. Whereas the first volume (SP532) concentrates on general aspects and a synthesis of the Ordovician geology of Europe, this volume (SP533) includes reviews of Ordovician successions of most other parts of the world. The classic successions of the Ordovician basins of North America are presented, as well as those of China where several of the Ordovician Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points are defined. The volume also includes syntheses of the Ordovician geology of Africa, South America, most regions of Asia from the Near to the Far East along with Central Asia, as well as Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica.

Download or read book Geology of Cambro Ordovician Rocks in the Port Saunders NTS 12I 11 Castors River NTS 12I 15 St John Island NTS 12I 14 and Torrent River NTS 12I 10 Map Areas written by Ian Knight and published by St.John's : Department of Mines and Energy, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. This book was released on 1991 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area described in this study is located off the western coast of the north central Great Northern Peninsula of north-west Newfoundland. After an introduction on the geographic setting of the area, previous research, and the general geology & stratigraphy of the area, this report describes the area's Cambrian and Ordovician rock units, with information on their lithology, stratigraphic relationships, distribution, palaeontology, age, and depositional environment. This is followed by a section on geologic structure, including details of faults. The final section covers the area's economic geology and includes a history of mineral exploration, discussion of mineralization in Cambrian carbonates and in the St. George & Table Head groups, and data on industrial minerals (potassium-bearing shales, limestones, dolomites). The appendix contains descriptions of measured stratigraphic sections.

Book Geological Exploration in Murzuq Basin

Download or read book Geological Exploration in Murzuq Basin written by D. Worsley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-12-19 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Murzuq Basin is a large intracratonic sag basin located in southwestern Libya. Exploration efforts started in this vast and remote Saharan region already in 1957 and 60 exploratory wells have been drilled to date, resulting in over 20 discoveries with around 4,000 million barrels of oil in place. Most discoveries have been made in Ordovician sandstone reservoirs sourced by hot shales of the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Oil is already being produced and exported from the area, but the basin's total hydrocarbon potential is still poorly understood. Recent exploration - especially the major discovery and initial development of the Giant "Elephant" Field - has greatly increased interest for the area's potential. Many petroleum geologists and companies now believe that the basin may well develop into a new major hydrocarbon province which will significantly contribute to Europe's energy needs in the next decades. This book presents papers from a conference held at Sebha University - on the eastern margins of the Murzug Basin - in September 1998.The book continues an ongoing series of presentations of the geology of Libya, but the 25 contributions herein mostly centre on the Murzuq Basin itself and on nearby areas. There are still many unresolved questions in terms of geological and hydrocarbon exploration in these difficult desert areas, but the papers herein will hopefully present a first comprehensive overview of an exciting frontier exploration region. About half of the papers are directly related to hydrocarbon exploration, and to source rock and reservoir development, but a wide variety of other features are also described, ranging from palaeontology and biostratigraphy to ore geology and water resources, covering the entire geological column from the Precambrian to the Holocene. The book concludes with a bibliography covering all geological aspects of this challenging but very promising frontier area.

Book The Sedimentary Basins of the United States and Canada

Download or read book The Sedimentary Basins of the United States and Canada written by Andrew Miall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there have been rapid strides in our understanding of plate-tectonic processes, many developments in methods of basin analysis, and the accumulation of much new surface and subsurface geological and geophysical data. Projects such as COCORP (in the United States) and Lithoprobe (in Canada) have provided essential insights into the deep crustal structure of the continent. Synthesis of all the available information about North America's geological regions has not been attempted systematically since the "Decade of North American Geology project undertaken by the Geological Society of America and the Geological Survey of Canada nearly twenty years ago. The book commences with a summary of the Phanerozoic geological history of the United States and Canada, illustrated with a suite of new paleogeographic maps, and tying in each of the subsequent regional chapters by the inclusion of numerous cross-references. This followed by a set of fifteen regional syntheses of the principal tectonic regions of the United States and Canada, focusing on the stratigraphic and tectonic history of the major sedimentary basins. Most of these chapters have been contributed by specialists, drawing on their own research, and providing interpretive summaries of a type not previously attempted. - Up-to-date synthesis of the sedimentary/tectonic history of the major areas of the United States and Canada - Up-to-date references - Many new color maps
