Book Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis

Download or read book Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis written by Andrew D. Miall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 893 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past five years there have been many advances in the field of basin analysis. Developments such as the publication of new stratigraphic codes; new research in fission-track dating; evolution of thought regarding the importance of tectonic versus eustatic controls of regional and global cycles; and refinements of geophysically-based, basin-subsidence models have necessitated the publication of a second edition of Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis. Like the first edition, this book emphasizes the stratigraphic evidence which geologists can actually see in outcrops, well records, and core samples and can gather using geophysical techniques. Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis is both an excellent text for students and a practical handbook for professional geologists.

Book The Key to Earth History

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Doyle
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2001-06-08
  • ISBN : 0471492159
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book The Key to Earth History written by Peter Doyle and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-06-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Key to Earth History introduces students to the basic tools used by geologists to reconstruct the Earth's history, and shows how these tools can be used to chart the pattern of global environmental change since the formation of the Earth some 4600 million years ago. It tells a story of mountain building, climate change and of the evolution of life, and uses the North Atlantic region (Europe and North America) as a study area to illustrate this story. Divided into two parts, the book shows how stratigraphy is the key to understanding the history of the Earth. The first part examines the basic stratigraphical methods used to establish, date and interpret the rock record as the product of a series of events whithin Earth history. The second part presents the results obtained by geologists, who have used these stratigraphical tools to reconstruct the pattern of global environmental change through geological time and focuses on the geological evolution of the North Atlantic region. The Key to Earth History is essential reading for geologists, geographers and environmental scientists, as well as to all those interested in the story of the planet. "The authors provide no one with an alibi for bad stratigraphic teaching!" —Geoscientist "The aims of this introductory textbook are to explain the process and pattern of Earth history, to generate interest and enthusiasm, to make stratigraphy fun and exciting! These aims are admirably achieved." —The Holocene "This is a great little book! I found that, not only was everything covered, but that it was covered in a refreshing, readable, no-nonsense fashion." —Earth Science Reviews "The Key to Earth History really should be compulsory reading for all ... geology students." —Geologie

Book Geologic Fracture Mechanics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard A. Schultz
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2019-08-08
  • ISBN : 1108119026
  • Pages : 612 pages

Download or read book Geologic Fracture Mechanics written by Richard A. Schultz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively introduction to geologic fracture mechanics provides a consistent treatment of all common geologic structural discontinuities. It explores the formation, growth and interpretation of fractures and deformation bands, from theoretical, field and lab-based perspectives, bridging the gap between a general textbook treatment and the more advanced research literature. It allows the reader to acquire basic tools to interpret discontinuity origins, geometries, patterns and implications using many of the leading and contemporary concepts known to specialists in the field. Problem sets are provided at the end of each chapter, and worked examples are included within each chapter to illustrate topics and enable self-study. With all common geologic structures including joints, hydrofractures, faults, stylolites and deformation bands being discussed from a fresh perspective, it will be a useful reference for advanced students, researchers and industry practitioners interested in structural geology, neotectonics, rock mechanics, planetary geology, and reservoir geomechanics.

Book Mechanism of Sedimentary Basin Formation

Download or read book Mechanism of Sedimentary Basin Formation written by Yasuto Itoh and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the mechanisms of sedimentary basin formation on active plate margins, which show enormous diversity reflecting complex tectonic processes. Multidisciplinary approach pursuing basin-forming mechanism is based on geology, sedimentology, geochronology and geophysics. Some chapters are dedicated to the genetic analysis of sedimentary basins in wrench deformation zones in forearc and intra-arc regions. Another block of chapters deals with basin formation in peripheral regions of Eurasia and intra-arc / foreland basins under the influence of the fluctuation of stress regimes. Finally geophysical approaches to basin analyses are shown in some chapters from microscopic to regional scales. Diverse contents of the chapters provide the audience with the present accomplishments of basin researches on active margins by Earth scientists.

Book The Geology of Fluvial Deposits

Download or read book The Geology of Fluvial Deposits written by Andrew D. Miall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluvial deposits represent the preserved record of one of the major nonmarine environ ments. They accumulate in large and small intermontane valleys, in the broad valleys of trunk rivers, in the wedges of alluvial fans flanking areas of uplift, in the outwash plains fronting melting glaciers, and in coastal plains. The nature of alluvial assemblages - their lithofacies composition, vertical stratigraphic record, and architecture - reflect an inter play of many processes, from the wandering of individual channels across a floodplain, to the long-term effects of uplift and subsidence. Fluvial deposits are a sensitive indicator of tectonic processes, and also carry subtle signatures of the climate at the time of deposition. They are the hosts for many petroleum and mineral deposits. This book is about all these subjects. The first part of the book, following a historical introduction, constructs the strati graphic framework of fluvial deposits, step by step, starting with lithofacies, combining these into architectural elements and other facies associations, and then showing how these, in turn, combine to represent distinctive fluvial styles. Next, the discussion turns to problems of correlation and the building of large-scale stratigraphic frameworks. These basin-scale constructions form the basis for a discussion of causes and processes, including autogenic processes of channel shifting and cyclicity, and the larger questions of allogenic (tectonic, eustatic, and climatic) sedimentary controls and the development of our ideas about nonmarine sequence stratigraphy.
