Book Mechanics Of Coastal Sediment Transport

Download or read book Mechanics Of Coastal Sediment Transport written by Jorgen Fredsoe and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992-11-02 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats the subject of sediment transport in the marine environment, covering transport of noncohesive sediment by waves and currents in- and outside the surf zone. It can be read independently, but a background in hydraulics and basic wave mechanics is required. The primary aim of the book is to describe the physical processes of sediment transport and how to represent them in mathematical models. The book can be divided in two main parts; in the first, the relevant hydrodynamic theory is described. This part contains a review of elementary theory for water waves, chapters on the turbulent wave boundary layer and the turbulent interaction between waves and currents, and finally, surf zone hydrodynamics and wave driven currents. The second part covers sediment transport and morphological development. The part on sediment transport introduces the basic concepts (critical bed shear stress, bed load, suspended load and sheet layer, near-bed concentration, effect of sloping bed); it treats suspended sediment in waves and current and in the surf zone, and current and wave-generated bed forms. Finally, the modelling of cross-shore and long-shore sediment transport is described together with the development of coastal profiles and coastlines.

Book Sediment Transport in Random Waves

Download or read book Sediment Transport in Random Waves written by S. S. Liang and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanics of sediment transport under wave action are systematically investigated. Results are then extended to a random wave field. The results apply only to regions well beyond the surf zone where the flow field, though irregular in appearance, is still amenable to mathematical expressions in gross terms. The flow field is artificially divided into two zones: the bed layer, and the internal flow region where viscosity can be neglected. The analysis is then naturally broken down into several stages: (1) The simulation of random sea condition in time and space frames with given wave spectrum; (2) The sediment concentration and transport in the bed layer under random wave; (3) The suspended load concentration and transport in the internal flow region. The total sediment transport is calculated through matching boundary conditions of the two zones and by adding the bed-load and suspended-load movements. Computer programs are developed to facilitate calculations with overwater wind speed and sediment grain size as the major inputs. (Modified author abstract).

Book Longshore Sand Transport Distribution Across the Surf Zone Due to Random Waves

Download or read book Longshore Sand Transport Distribution Across the Surf Zone Due to Random Waves written by Saad Mesbah M. Abdelrahman and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water waves are one of the principal causes of shoreline changes. When waves break along the shore, they release their energy and momentum and give rise to a longshore current. The longshore current, along with the stirring action of the waves, is the primary mechanism for longshore sediment transport. The longshore sand transport rate is an essential factor determining erosion or accretion along a coast. If the longshore sand transport rate can be accurately estimated, a quantitative picture of shoreline evolution can be evaluated, including changes of the shoreline due to marine structures. In the present study, analytical and numerical models are developed based on a longshore current model for random waves and a sediment transport formulation by Thornton to predict the cross-shore sediment transport distribution and to compute the total volume of sand transport rate. The model is compared with the field data acquired from Leadbetter Beach, Santa Barbara, California.

Book An Introduction To Hydraulics Of Fine Sediment Transport

Download or read book An Introduction To Hydraulics Of Fine Sediment Transport written by Ashish J Mehta and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 1060 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents observations on the phenomena of fine sediment transport and their explanations under process-related divisions such as flocculation, erosion, and deposition. The text is a compilation of the author's lecture notes from nearly four decades of teaching and guiding graduate students in civil and coastal engineering. Illustrations of fine sediment transport processes and their complexities given in the book are taken from field and laboratory-based observations by the author and his students, as well as numerous investigators. The wide-ranging composition of particles (of inorganic and organic matter), their universal presence and their complex interactions with hydraulic forces make this branch of science a difficult one to deal with in a single treatise. It is therefore essential to study fine sediment transport as an independent subject rather than cover it in no more than a single chapter as many texts on coarse sediment transport have done.Even though the entire coverage is “introductory”, the twelve chapters collectively include more material than what can be reasonably dealt with in a one semester, three-credit course. The book includes an extensive description of the components of fine-grained — especially cohesive — sediment transport. It covers the development of the subject in scientific and engineering applications mainly from the 1950s to its present state. Solved examples and chapter-end exercises are also included. This text is aimed at senior civil engineering undergraduates and graduate students who, in the normal course of their study, seldom come across the subject of fine sediment transport in their curricula. Interested students should have a basic understanding of the mechanics of fluid flow and open channel hydraulics.
