Book Estimated Sediment Thickness Quality and Toxicity to Benthic Organisms in Selected Impoundments in Massachusetts

Download or read book Estimated Sediment Thickness Quality and Toxicity to Benthic Organisms in Selected Impoundments in Massachusetts written by Robert F. Breault and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Geological Survey and the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game, Division of Ecological Restoration, collaborated to collect baseline information on the quantity and quality of sediment impounded behind selected dams in Massachusetts, including sediment thickness and the occurrence of contaminants potentially toxic to benthic organisms. The thicknesses of impounded sediments were measured, and cores of sediment were collected from 32 impoundments in 2004 and 2005. Cores were chemically analyzed, and concentrations of 32 inorganic elements and 108 organic compounds were quantified. Sediment thicknesses varied considerably among the 32 impoundments, with an average thickness of 3.7 feet. Estimated volumes also varied greatly, ranging from 100,000 cubic feet to 81 million cubic feet. Concentrations of toxic contaminants as well as the number of contaminants detected above analytical quantification levels (also known as laboratory reporting levels) varied greatly among sampling locations. Based on measured contaminant concentrations and comparison to published screening thresholds, bottom sediments were predicted to be toxic to bottom-dwelling (benthic) organisms in slightly under 30 percent of the impoundments sampled. Statistically significant relations were found between several of the contaminants and individual indicators of urban land use and industrial activity in the upstream drainage areas of the impoundments. However, models developed to estimate contaminant concentrations at unsampled sites from upstream landscape characteristics had low predictive power, consistent with the long and complex land-use history that is typical of many drainage areas in Massachusetts.

Book Ecological Benefits of Contaminated Sediment Remediation in the Great Lakes Basin

Download or read book Ecological Benefits of Contaminated Sediment Remediation in the Great Lakes Basin written by Michael Anthony Zarull and published by Windsor, Ont. : International Joint Commission. This book was released on 1999 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interim report reviews the following: what is known about contaminated sediment in the Great Lakes; the physical & biological processes related to contaminated sediment in the aquatic environment; the ecological effects of contaminated sediment; ecological improvements resulting from sediment remediation in Sweden, Japan, and the Hudson River; sediment remediation projects in the Great Lakes; case studies of sediment remediation & associated ecological benefits in Waukegan (Illinois) Harbour and Black River, Ohio; and the links between contaminated sediment & ecological damage. The final section draws conclusions & makes recommendations regarding the need for monitoring & further research.

Book Ecological Integrity

Download or read book Ecological Integrity written by David Pimentel and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Integrity Project has brought together leading scientists and thinkers from around the world to examine the combined problems of threatened and unequal human well-being, degradation of the ecosphere, and unsustainable economies. Based on the proposition that healthy, functioning ecosystems are a necessary prerequisite for both economic security and social justice, the project is built around the concept of ecological integrity and its practical implications for policy and management. Ecological Integrity presents a synthesis and findings of the project. Contributors -- including Robert Goodland, James Karr, Orie Loucks, Jack Manno, William Rees, Mark Sagoff, Robert Ulanowicz, Philippe Crabbe, Laura Westra, David Pimentel, Reed Noss, and others -- examine the key elements of ecological integrity and consider what happens when integrity is lost or compromised. The book: examines historical and philosophical foundations of the concept of ecological integrity explores how integrity can be measured examines the relationships among ecological integrity, human health, and food production looks at economic and ethical issues that need to be considered in protecting ecological integrity offers concrete recommendations for reversing ecological degradation while promoting social and economic justice and welfare . Contributors argue that there is an urgent need for rapid and fundamental change in the ecologically destructive patterns of collective human behavior if society is to survive and thrive in coming decades. Ecological Integrity is a groundbreaking book that integrates environmental science, economics, law, and ethics in problem analysis, synthesis, and solution, and is a vital contribution for anyone concerned with interactions between human and planetary health.
