The volume asks "How can you achieve sustainable sediment treatment?". In fact, before this question can be answered, many steps have to be considered beforehand. This book tackles the questions and issues which arise when looking at the various steps involved. This volume is applicable to a wide audience, from students at the graduate level, to experienced researchers and laboratory personnel in academia, industry and government. This volume also available as part of a 4-volume set, ISBN 0444519599. Discount price for set purchase. Gives a broad overview on sediment treatment with a European perspective Suitable for those new to sediment treatment as well as specialists in the field Provides an overview on the costs involved in sediment treatment

Book Valorization of Dredged Sediments as Sustainable Construction Resources

Download or read book Valorization of Dredged Sediments as Sustainable Construction Resources written by Amine El Mahdi Safhi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valorization of Dredged Sediments as Sustainable Construction Resources provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of research on the reuse of sediments as a raw material for civil engineering fields. Dredging is increasing in scale worldwide, while deep sea disposal is being eliminated and landfill disposal is becoming less sustainable. Yet these sediments offer a potentially useful resource for constructing pavements, soil, bricks, ceramic and clinker, for they provide fine and lightweight aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials and geopolymer binders. This has sparked considerable research on valorization, which is presented here. Covers the main re-uses of sediments and the valorization required Focuses on state-of-the-art research on practical guidance Discusses limitations and future perspectives for sediments valorization The book suits researchers and students working in the area, as well as industrial engineers and professionals working on recycling and dredging.

Book Use of Dredgings for Landfill

Download or read book Use of Dredgings for Landfill written by Raymond J. Krizek and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research program was initiated with the overall objective of evaluating the usefulness of dredged sediments as landfill material. The study is limited to the deposition of polluted fresh water dredgings from the Great Lakes area, and the major effort was centered around four disposal sites in the harbor serving Toledo, Ohio. A comprehensive sampling and testing program was undertaken in the field and in the laboratory to determine the engineering characteristics of hydraulically placed maintenance dredgings and the water quality effects associated with a typical dredging and disposal operation. Several thousand chemical analyses were conducted to assess the pollution potential of dredged materials under chemically treated and nontreated conditions. Several series of flocculation-sedimentation, sedimentation-leaching, repeated leaching, and evaporation tests were conducted to study the possibility of stabilizing these materials with chemical additives and to evaluate the effects, if any, of such chemicals on the leachates. Numerous index property tests were performed for classificatory purposees, and several correlations among different properties and the results of the index tests were established. An extensive field monitoring program was undertaken to evaluate the effects of a typical dredging and disposal operation on the water quality parameters of the environs. Periodic vane shear tests were conducted in two of the areas, and settlement plates were installed at one site to determine the time-dependent variations in the strength and settlement, respectively. Several in situ permeability tests were conducted on the foundation soils and the dredged materials to evaluate drainage conditions. Finally, a one-dimensional mathemathical model was developed to assess the relative importance of gravity drainage and evapotransporation on the desiccation and consolidation of a landfill composed of maintenance dredgings.

Book Use of Sediment Quality Guidelines SQGs in Dredged Material Management

Download or read book Use of Sediment Quality Guidelines SQGs in Dredged Material Management written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical note describes some major features of the most common methods for calculating sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 1997). The note also describes features that limit the utility of SQGs in dredged material management. In light of these limitations, this technical note specifies circumstances in dredged material assessments where SQGs may be technically appropriate and helpful, and describes conditions in which SQGs are not technically appropriate, for dredged material management decisionmaking.
