But statements made by Mattheson indicate that Bertouch produced an extensive body of sacred compositions as well. Only three cantatas, composed before 1694, are known to survive; the manuscripts, which are part of the Bokemeyer collection, are held in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Two of these works are solo cantatas for a single voice, while the remaining one is a large-scale chorale cantata based on "Wachet auff." Both solo cantatas end with a joyful Alleluia movement and were obviously written for professional singers with considerable lung capacity. The chorale cantata, too, makes substantial demands on the soloists. Contrasting sections, tone-painting and occasional chromatic writing are features that should arouse the interest of singers and scholars studying seventeenth-century northern German vocal music.

Download or read book Cantatas for a Voice with Accompanyment Together with Songs on Various Subjects for One Two Three Voices written by HENRY. CAREY and published by Gale Ecco, Print Editions. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Book Aspects of the Secular Cantata in Late Baroque Italy

Download or read book Aspects of the Secular Cantata in Late Baroque Italy written by Michael Talbot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As shown by the ever-increasing volume of recordings, editions and performances of the vast repertory of secular cantatas for solo voice produced, primarily in Italy, in the second half of the seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth century, this long neglected genre has at last 'come of age'. However, scholarly interest is currently lagging behind musical practice: incredibly, there has been no general study of the Baroque cantata since Eugen Schmitz's handbook of 1914, and although many academic theses have examined microscopically the cantatas of individual composers, there has been little opportunity to view these against the broader canvas of the genre as a whole. The contributors in this volume choose aspects of the cantata relevant to their special interests in order to say new things about the works, whether historical, analytical, bibliographical, discographical or performance-based. The prime focus is on Italian-born composers working between 1650 and 1750 (thus not Handel), but the opportunity is also taken in one chapter (by Graham Sadler) to compare the French cantata tradition with its Italian parent in association with a startling new claim regarding the intended instrumentation. Many key figures are considered, among them Tomaso Albinoni, Giovanni Bononcini, Giovanni Legrenzi, Benedetto Marcello, Alessandro Scarlatti, Alessandro Stradella, Leonardo Vinci and Antonio Vivaldi. The poetic texts of the cantatas, all too often treated as being of little intrinsic interest, are given their due weight. Space is also found for discussions of the history of Baroque solo cantatas on disc and of the realization of the continuo in cantata arias - a topic more complex and contentious than may at first be apparent. The book aims to stimulate interest in, and to win converts to, this genre, which in its day equalled the instrumental sonata in importance, and in which more than a few composers invested a major part of their creativity.

Book Secular Vocal Music

Download or read book Secular Vocal Music written by Francesco Barsanti and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A latecomer to music and not particularly gifted as an executant on any instrument (a great handicap for any musician in an age when music appreciation was performer-centered rather than composer-centered), the Italian expatriate Francesco Barsanti (ca. 1690–1775) would seem doomed to failure, especially given his reportedly unassertive, even timid, personality; but his versatility, industry, and ability to win and retain a surprisingly large support network kept him afloat until the end. His ability to survive from day to day by carrying out a multitude of humdrum tasks gave him sufficient time and freedom to engage in what he did best and seemingly valued most: composing music. The compact but by no means negligible corpus of music he produced in a wide variety of genres makes him one of the most original and interesting composers active in eighteenth-century Britain. His instrumental music has already won some recognition in modern times, but his equally impressive vocal music, all produced in Britain, is so far virtually unknown. The present volume, which contains all Barsanti’s secular vocal music known to survive, together with a complementary volume containing his complete sacred vocal music, aims to bring these attractive works before the musicological community and the public at large.
