Download or read book Secular Music and Other Poems written by Matt Proser and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secular Music and Other Poems By: Matt Proser Poet Matt Proser finds his poetic identity in nature and locality. He expresses himself through descriptive details of localities such as the Outer Banks in North Carolina, Seattle, Connecticut, or in various places in Argentina. For Proser, an engagement with place is a new engagement with life, and travel is adventure, trial, and rebirth, but underneath these runs the pulse of nature and the instinctive self that guides his language. Proser’s poems are attempts to release the primitive energy hidden within us; energy associated with the pleasure or pain that exists in human relationships such as love, marriage, friendship, or even social being, and their opposite, death. Thus, language is the staff that leads us from the outer world of civilized communication to the intense world of illogical feeling, the residue of our primitive past. In so doing, his poetry at times engages myth, the basis of all art, and music, the voice of the inexpressible. Secular Music encompasses a particular segment of Proser’s life during which he attempted disentangle the world with words that reached into the meaning of the human experiences he was having.

Book The Delights of the Muses

Download or read book The Delights of the Muses written by Richard Crashaw and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Delights of the Muses: Secular Poems A desire having been expressed for a collection of Crashaw's non-sacred pieces, the present volume is offered as supplying the unquestionable desideratum. For information about the Poet and his works we would refer the reader to our fuller edition recently issued, and for the present occasion confine ourselves to the productions contained herein, and to what follows as appendix to this edition of the secular poems. We can readily understand and appreciate the wish for the pieces herein contained: productions free from questionable theology and even questionable taste. Without breaking from our previously expressed opinion that Crashaw is at his highest in his sacred verse - as indeed we believe is the opinion of the best critics - we can yet on several worthy grounds place these "Delights of the Muses," for fancy, delicacy, true poetry, and exquisiteness, in a perfect niche of their own; and while the non-Protestant will prize most those matchless sacred verses contained in "Carmen Deo Nostro" and in "Steps to the Temple," the more general lover of verse will revel in the ardours and sweetnesses of "The Delights of the Muses." True "Delights" indeed! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Media of Secular Music in the Medieval and Early Modern Period 1100 1650

Download or read book The Media of Secular Music in the Medieval and Early Modern Period 1100 1650 written by Vincenzo Borghetti and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings a new perspective to secular music sources from the Middle Ages and early modernity by viewing them as media communication tools, whose particular features shape the meaning of their contents. Ranging from the eleventh to seventeenth centuries, and across countries and genres, the chapters offer innovative insights into the historical relationship between music and its presentation in a wide variety of media. The lens of media enables contributors to expand music history beyond notated music manuscripts and instruments to include images, furniture, luxury items, and other objects, and to address uniquely visual and material aspects of music sources in books and literature. Drawing together an international group of contributors, the volume pays close attention to the medial and material dimensions of musical sources, considering them as multifaceted objects that not only contain but also determine the nature of the music they transmit. Transforming our understanding of musical media, this volume will be of interest to scholars of musicology, art history, and medieval and early modern cultures.

Book The English Countryside

Download or read book The English Countryside written by David Haigron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines representations of the English countryside and its mutations, and what they reveal about a nation’s, communities’ or individuals’ search for identity – and fear of losing it. Based on a pluridisciplinary approach and a variety of media, this book challenges the view that the English countryside is an apolitical space characterised by permanence and lack of conflict. It analyses how the pastoral motif is actually subverted to explore liminal spaces and temporalities. The authors deconstruct the “rural idyll” myth to show how it plays a distinctive and yet ambiguous part in defining Englishness/Britishness. A must read for both scholars and students interested in British rural and cultural history, media and literature.
