Book excerpt: Set in the post 9/11 world, Australia is still a country of relative innocence with our terror threat at medium to low. All that is about to change. With the Bali bombings, boats on the horizon, and the threat of global terrorism on the increase, the Prime Minister instructs our overseas intelligence agency ASIS (Australian Secret intelligence Service) to activate an independent covert team, designated Section Zulu, to move around our closest Asian neighbours and alert Canberra to any terrorist plans, never realising the enemy could already be inside the fence. When that overseas team Section Zulu, uncovers intelligence of threats to Australia the Prime Minister decides the last line of defence will be a small locally-based covert team that will secretly terminate that threat. Headed by ex-SASR officer Tony McAvin, and together with electronic surveillance experts, the crack team track down homegrown terrorists. But can the team overcome living and working in a shadowy world of death and deception and still become the force the country so desperately needs. A team that will not have to answer to anyone but the Prime Minister. A team that will be totally deniable and covert - and one that will take the fall if and when it all goes wrong... that team is called Section Alpha.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to study the following problem: When is there a locally flat embedding g: N[superscript]n [right arrow] M[superscript]m such that pg is [lowercase Greek]Alpha-close to h? This problem is intimately related to the problem of approximating topological embeddings with locally flat embeddings.

New base-level server configurations provide four times the memory of current systems. Contains updated Windows NT section to reflect current technical port to Alpha Includes new insights into the software aspects of the implementation Covers new multimedia instructions for increased performance with high-end graphics applications

Book Health Risks of Radon and Other Internally Deposited Alpha Emitters

Download or read book Health Risks of Radon and Other Internally Deposited Alpha Emitters written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes hazards from radon progeny and other alpha-emitters that humans may inhale or ingest from their environment. In their analysis, the authors summarize in one document clinical and epidemiological evidence, the results of animal studies, research on alpha-particle damage at the cellular level, metabolic pathways for internal alpha-emitters, dosimetry and microdosimetry of radionuclides deposited in specific tissues, and the chemical toxicity of some low-specific-activity alpha-emitters. Techniques for estimating the risks to humans posed by radon and other internally deposited alpha-emitters are offered, along with a discussion of formulas, models, methods, and the level of uncertainty inherent in the risk estimates.

Book Finding Alpha

Download or read book Finding Alpha written by Eric Falkenstein and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2009-06-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Finding Alpha "Eric Falkenstein is more than one of the smartest and funniest people in finance. He's been a banker, a key model builder at a major rating agency, and a hedge fund trader. In this tour de force, he outlines the successes and failures of financial theory applications in the real world from the perspective of an aggressive early adopter of the best ideas in finance. To this day, I think Eric's private firm default model is one of the best papers ever published in applied finance, and this wonderful book falls into the same category." —Donald R. van Deventer, PhD, founder and Chief Executive Officer, Kamakura Corporation "People dismissed Columbus when he said the world was round. Thank goodness he persisted. Like Columbus, Falkenstein challenges standard thinking, only this time about risk and reward. As the meltdown of the capital markets has shown, the financial industry clearly missed something with regard to risk management. As an industry, we need to consider alternative theories on risk, and clearly Falkenstein is on to something here. Agree with him or not, Finding Alpha is worth a read." —Kevin M. Blakely, President and CEO,The Risk Management Association "Writing through the lens of an experienced practitioner, Falkenstein digests decades of research in capital markets, financial economics, and investment psychology that have shaped modern investment theory. This text is an excellent companion for portfolio managers, investment students, or anyone seeking to better understand the relationship between risk, returns, and financial reward." —Todd Houge, PhD, CFA, The University of Iowa How do we find alpha whenrisk does not correlate with return? Finding Alpha is a practical guide to achieving alpha when conventional measures of risk rarely correlate with higher returns. Author Eric Falkenstein-a PhD who has also been a risk manager and portfolio manager—tells the story of alpha from its beginnings to its current reversal, where risk is now evidenced by return as opposed to vice versa. Falkenstein begins by walking readers through the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), as well as other well-documented theories about risk and return, and explores how these theories measure up to current empirical evidence being documented by researchers and academics. He also outlines a novel approach to the issues of how benchmark risk and investor overconfidence affects expected asset returns, how to understand the nature of alpha and risk, and how to use practical applications of alpha-seeking strategies that he developed as a successful hedge fund manager. Finding Alpha concludes by outlining some real-life applications of alpha in finance and explains how the search for alpha affects the day-to-day life of all financial professionals.

Book Lyman alpha as an Astrophysical and Cosmological Tool

Download or read book Lyman alpha as an Astrophysical and Cosmological Tool written by Mark Dijkstra and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrogen Lyman-alpha line is of utmost importance to many fields of astrophysics. This UV line being conveniently redshifted with distance to the visible and even near infrared wavelength ranges, it is observable from the ground, and provides the main observational window on the formation and evolution of high redshift galaxies. Absorbing systems that would otherwise go unnoticed are revealed through the Lyman-alpha forest, Lyman-limit, and damped Lyman-alpha systems, tracing the distribution of baryonic matter on large scales, and its chemical enrichment. We are living an exciting epoch with the advent of new instruments and facilities, on board of satellites and on the ground. Wide field and very sensitive integral field spectrographs are becoming available on the ground, such as MUSE at the ESO VLT. The giant E-ELT and TMT telescopes will foster a quantum leap in sensitivity and both spatial and spectroscopic resolution, to the point of being able, perhaps, to measure directly the acceleration of the Hubble flow. In space, the JWST will open new possibilities to study the Lyman-alpha emission of primordial galaxies in the near infrared. As long as the Hubble Space Telescope will remain available, the UV-restframe properties of nearby galaxies will be accessible to our knowledge. Therefore, this Saas-Fee course appears very timely and should meet the interest of many young researchers.

Organized into five parts, this edition begins with an overview of the instruction-set architecture. This text then describes the supporting PALcode routines for three operating systems. Other parts consider a particular console implementation that is specific to platforms that support the OpenVMS AXP or DEC OSF/1 operating systems. This book discusses as well the specific operating system PALcode architecture. The final part provides a discussion of console issues for Windows NT with its PALcode description. This book is a valuable resource for machine-language programmers.
