Download or read book The Psychology of Secrets written by Anita E. Kelly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On an MTV special aired in 2000, young interviewees were asked to confess the worse thing they were ever told during a romantic breakup. One person tearfully responded "that I suck in bed. " More recently, an acquaintance of mine admitted to his new girlfriend that he "has a mean streak. " She decided not to date him after that. Another memorable and painful example of openness occurred years ago when I served as a member of a suicide intervention team. I was called to a very disturbing scene in an upscale neighborhood to console a woman who was threaten ing to take her life on the lawn in front of her children. Her husband had just confessed his long-term affair to her that morning and she felt that her world was coming apart. Fortunately, she did not take her life but was left with the humiliation of haVing her neighbors know about her private troubles. The question these examples bring to mind is, "Why do people so often reveal potentially stigmatizing personal information to others?" The reader probably has an intuitive answer to this question already. It can seem like such a burden-even torture-to keep secrets from other people. Hiding such things as feelings of discontent from a boyfriend or girlfriend, violations of the law from close friends, and indiscretions from employers can be alienating. People want others to know them; therefore they often end up disclosing self-incriminating information.

  • Release : 2013-05-25
  • ISBN : 9781484830697
  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book Psychotherapy written by James A. Stump and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-05-25 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little book answers all of the 'frequently asked questions' about counseling in a humorous and 'reader friendly' way. It is available in both print and e-book versions from Amazon.com. The following is an excerpt. “Successful therapy flows like a movie script in that while a script has three acts, psychotherapy has three 'phases'. In a movie script, the main characters (MC) are peacefully going along minding their own business until their life is disrupted by forces outside of their control. Not having enough knowledge or resources to deal with the problem, the MCs 'run for their lives' and/or seek help. When the MCs have learned enough about the problem and have 'had enough of running away', the 'worm turns' and they begin to fight back. Eventually our 'heroes' and the dilemma clash in some kind of a 'great battle' in which hopefully the 'good guys' win and life returns to the peace and serenity from which it began. But all is not the same. Our characters have been dramatically changed by the experience: hopefully, they are morally stronger and significantly wiser. And what have they learned?” Perhaps some of the secrets that their therapist would have taught them.

Book Therapy Breakthrough

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael R. Edelstein
  • Publisher : Open Court
  • Release : 2013-08-14
  • ISBN : 0812698460
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Therapy Breakthrough written by Michael R. Edelstein and published by Open Court. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More people are in psychotherapy than ever before. Yet most of them have no idea of the vast differences between the hundreds of various schools of therapy. Therapy Breakthrough is the first book to clearly explain the theories and practices of the two big camps: Psychodynamic or PD therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral or CB therapy. PD therapists believe that emotional problems are caused by hidden forces in our unconscious minds, forces that cannot be observed directly and that resist being uncovered. CB therapists, by contrast, maintain that the roots of people’s emotional and behavioral disturbances can be identified by direct questions, and these problems can then be tackled by straightforward techniques. Therapy Breakthrough is written from the standpoint of CB therapy. Using psychological research, philosophy, and common sense, it argues that PD therapy is founded on mistaken theories of the mind, and explains how to apply CB methods directly to your own problems.
