Book Secrets of Polar Travel Classic Reprint

Download or read book Secrets of Polar Travel Classic Reprint written by Robert E. Peary and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secrets of Polar Travel In my book "The North Pole" appeared a brief resume, or synopsis, of my system of arctic exploration, which was the evolution of years of continuous practical work and experience in extreme high latitudes, wherein everything that could be thought of in the way of perfecting arctic methods and equipment was worked out. Ideas that in the mind or on paper appeared promising were tested relentlessly under the most hostile conditions. Those that failed under the test were abandoned, and those that gave evidence of containing some meat were perfected, until at last the entire subject of perfected equipment and methods, combined with the thorough knowledge of all conditions to be encountered gained through years of experience, compelled success. This was the resume: The so-called "Peary System" is too complex to be covered in a paragraph, and involves too many technical details to be outlined fully in any popular narrative. But the main points of it are about as follows: To drive a ship through the ice to the farthest possible northern land base from which she can be driven back again the following year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Secrets: The Final Mysteries of Exploration The first two decades of the twentieth century will rank as a most distinguished era in the history of exploration, for during them many of the great geographical riddles of the world have been solved. This book contains a record of some of the main achievements. What Nansen said of Polar exploration is true of all exploration; its story is a "mighty manifestation of the power of the Unknown over the mind of man." The Unknown, happily, will be always with us, for there are infinite secrets in a blade of grass, and an eddy of wind, and a grain of dust, and human knowledge will never attain that finality when the sense of wonder shall cease. But to the ordinary man there is an appeal in large, bold, and obvious conundrums, which is lacking in the minutioe of research. Thousands of square miles of the globe still await surveying and mapping, but most of the exploration of the future will be the elucidation of details. The main lines of the earth's architecture have been determined, and the task is now one of amplifying our knowledge of the groyning and buttresses and stone-work. Book Polar Exploration Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Polar Exploration I am glad to have this opportunity of presenting to a wide public an outline of the essential facts and problems of Polar Exploration. It is not more than introductory to a more comprehensive book which I hope to write when some leisure is afforded from the more real work of exploration and research. I must also note that it is not intended to be in any way a history of Polar Exploration. The book is simply a "traveller's sample," revealing to some extent what is in the great "warehouse" of the Polar Regions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the long twentieth century, explorers went in unprecedented numbers to the hottest, coldest, and highest points on the globe. Taking us from the Himalaya to Antarctica and beyond, Higher and Colder presents the first history of extreme physiology, the study of the human body at its physical limits. Each chapter explores a seminal question in the history of science, while also showing how the apparently exotic locations and experiments contributed to broader political and social shifts in twentieth-century scientific thinking. Unlike most books on modern biomedicine, Higher and Colder focuses on fieldwork, expeditions, and exploration, and in doing so provides a welcome alternative to laboratory-dominated accounts of the history of modern life sciences. Though centered on male-dominated practices—science and exploration—it recovers the stories of women’s contributions that were sometimes accidentally, and sometimes deliberately, erased. Engaging and provocative, this book is a history of the scientists and physiologists who face challenges that are physically demanding, frequently dangerous, and sometimes fatal, in the interest of advancing modern science and pushing the boundaries of human ability.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great White North: The Story of Polar Exploration From the Earliest Times to the Discovery of the Pole The material for this book has been gathered from the rich storehouse of Arctic Literature. The chief labour of its composition lay in elimination rather than construc tion. The great field I have endeavoured to present can hardly be brought with justice to the narrow bounds of a single cover, but I have conscientiously endeavoured to bring to the reader's mind an accurate record of bril liant deeds that go to make the history of the far North, and have let the explorers themselves tell the story of how these deeds have been accomplished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 'Mid Snow and Ice: Stories of Peril in Polar Seas Originally it was the hope of finding an 0 n north-western or north-eastern route to t e Orient. There was also the prospect of exploiting the great m'ueral wealth which was sup sed by some sanguine adventurers to be In den beneath the eternal snows of the far north. But to-day, when the fascination of exploration and discovery is as strong in the hearts of men as ever it was, the reason that urges Arctic and Antarctic voyagers to deeds of bravery is not the prospect of dis covering any new trade route amid the far northern icy seas, nor the hope of finding wealth beneath farthest southern snows. It is solely that certain scientific problems: ay once and for all be solved. The motive is indeed a high one, and the end to be attained may even yet demand immense sacrifices. True it is that the honour of being first at the north and south poles has not fallen to the lot of Englishmen; but at least we have the satisfaction of know ing that it was the work of British explorers that made success for others possible. And we know, too, that the men of our race are ready to meet whatever further demands upon courage and endurance may be neces sary to complete the work of exploration in the northern and southern extremities of the world. Be satisfied with, and how great my obligations are to, all the Gentlemen who were associated with me 'in the Expedition, whose kindness, good conduct, and cordial, co-operation, have made an impression which can never be effaced from my mind. The unfortunate death of Mr. Hood is the only drawback which I feel from the otherwise unalloyed pleasure I derived from reflecting on that cordial unanimity which at all times prevailed among us in the days of sunshine, and in those of sickness and sorrow.
