This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1880, Secretary's Report, 1912, Vol. 8 Dear classmates, - The only merit of this report is that so many of you desired it. It was begun soon after our thirtieth anniversary, and I soon discovered that your interest was to hear from others and not to communicate your own doings. Nevertheless I have kept on with it, and as it may help us to keep closer in touch with one another, I hope you will think it worth while. It is still incomplete. There are several memorial sketches that should be prepared and several classmates are still to be heard from, but it seems best to wait no longer and to ask you to receive it as it is, with that generous consideration for your class secretary which you have so often shown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report: Harvard College Class of 1911 At the present time, the Class has on hand in cash and in bonds as listed below - a total of There should, however, be a total of as there is in pledges due but not yet paid. Of this, $404 dates back to our Senior year in college $630 to June, 1912; to June, 1913, and the serious total of to last June. Most of this very appreciable sum is in small units which have in many cases been left unpaid by mere forget fulness. If as you read this, this statement applies to you, let's have a check at once and wind the matter up. Also, if you are one of a number of men who made their first deposit for a Class Album, or one of a number who now regret that they did not get one of these splendid Class souvenirs when in college, you have in the first case only to send the balance of $5, or in the second case to send $7 to have one of the Albums come to you. The sum of credited to the Photograph Committee under the heading of assets represents sums due or volumes in hand which will probably not be completely realized on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1872: Ninth Report of the Secretary, 1902-1912 Classmates: - Ten years have passed since the eighth report was published, and for that reason if for no other this ninth report should prove of interest. Except in one or two instances it covers only the past decade, and to give it a more personal touch you were asked to write your reply to my circular in the form of a letter to your Secretary and only the points on which information was particularly desired were indicated. For its sins of omission you will know where to place the blame and for its sins of commission I must ask some indulgence on the ground that it has had to be prepared in the midst of my ordinary work with all its constant interruptions. The Class is "still achieving, still pursuing," but the mournful fact which stares us in the face is the sad depletion in our numbers; sixteen of the graduate members have left us, among them Mills with his hearty enthusiasm, and the twin Sherburnes with their tuneful voices, to all of whom I think we will agree we owe the success which has attended our annual dinners; of those temporarily with the Class at Cambridge, Switzer has gone, in whose renewed acquaintance we were rejoicing. There are still too many men from whom we do not hear, but we have discovered the whereabouts of Burry and Eldridge, formerly members, and William Wesley French has joined us again. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report: Harvard College, Class of 1910 In presenting to you the Second Report of the Class of 1910 the Secretary owes you an apology. The lateness of the Report is lamentable, and can only be excused on the grounds: that it was hoped that the contributions to the Class for the Triennial Celebration would be sufficient to cover the expenses of its preparation. Such, however, was not the case, and it was only by appealing to our ever-ready Class Treasurer that the necessary financial backing was found in the income of the Class Fund. It is, hoped that the number of errors in the Report is small and that they will be received in a charitable mood, even though it may mean that you are credited with an extra child or two. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report: Harvard College Class of 1907 The scope of this report is small. Its purpose is simply to record the changes of occupation and address, the' mar riages and births, and the deaths which have occurred in the Class since graduation, three years ago. In a work of this kind, a few inaccuracies are inevitable, for which I ask your indulgence, with the assurance that I have spared no pains to minimize them. I am very grateful for the splendid co operation shown by the members of the Class in responding to requests for information. The fact that out of a Class as large as ours, only twelve men have not been heard from, is a record of which 1907 may well be proud. I have ventured, after much hesitation, to dedicate the report to Jack Morse. I am fully sensible of the unworthi ness of the ofiering, but perhaps this may serve until some more appropriate memorial can be provided, as a slight tribute on the part of the Class to the memory of a man whom we all loved and respected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report: Harvard College, Class of 1906 The Secretary assumes the responsibility for those errors which have undoubtedly occurred and for which he apolo gizes, hoping that members of the Class will call them to his attention. For omissions, however, those of our classmates are responsible who have scorned or neglected the duties of autobiography. Following the precedent of other classes the Class em ployed the Harvard Alumni Association in the preparation of this Report. The thanks of the Class are due the Association for the untiring care and effort which it has bestowed upon the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report: Harvard College Class of 1905 To the Members of the Class of 1905: The Second Class Report has been made possible by the keen support of a large majority of our class who have taken a loyal interest in trying to make it a success. I wish to apologize for any mistakes that may occur and trust they will be called to my attention. I regret to report that there is a large number of "lost men" and those not heard from. This state of affairs is most unsatisfactory and I believe could be rectified to a large extent if every man in the class felt it a duty to reply promptly and fully to my communications. Be sure to look over the list of "those not heard from" who at the same time appear to be "lost men." If you recognize some one concerning whom you can give information please notify me at once. The most important event since graduation was our triennial celebration. During that glorious week we enjoyed ourselves immensely and, incidentally, showed our prowess in athletics by victories on field and river. I feel that the thanks of the Class are due to Sidney Curtis, '05, who has worked most conscientiously in the preparation of this report and I take pleasure in acknowledging his service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report, 1914: Harvard College Class of 1908 The Class of Nineteen Hundred and Eight hereby adds one more volume to its growing list of publications. This is primarily a list of addresses issued to help our widely scattered class of seven hundred men to keep in touch with one another. As such it will fulfil no mean destiny. To this statistical information the Class has seen fit to add some personal narratives. The vitality and worth of these depend largely upon their intimate revelation of the authors. Therefore the secretary has firmly refrained from writing accounts of men who have not replied. The bulk of the Class found time to comply with our request, based as it was on a tradition of long standing. The accounts vary greatly in length and in substance. This was inevitable at first. Probably the variation in length will always exist. It is hoped, however, that the variation in substance will not be so great in our next Report four years hence, after the Class has realized the true value of the fuller and more intimate histories. There is no man in 1908 who will not read these little stories with keen interest. Here he may read of wanderings in many lands, of circumnavigating the globe, of adventures in every realm of human knowledge and endeavor. As in all times, the motive force has been, now pure unrest, now the lure of gold, and now a Lady's Eyes. But in the end no work has seemed to be too great and none too humble to include a member of the Class of 1908! Most seriously, however, this is no casual record of achievement. There is surely much here to ponder over. There is the story of men who have had the vision to see and the courage to act when a change of work was right, who have had grit to push forth into new fields when they realized they had chosen badly. This perhaps is one of the greatest lessons Harvard teaches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
