Book Handbook of European Intelligence Cultures

Download or read book Handbook of European Intelligence Cultures written by Bob de Graaff and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National intelligence cultures are shaped by their country’s history and environment. Featuring 32 countries (such as Albania, Belgium, Croatia, Norway, Latvia, Montenegro), the work provides insight into a number of rarely discussed national intelligence agencies to allow for comparative study, offering hard to find information into one volume. In their chapters, the contributors, who are all experts from the countries discussed, address the intelligence community rather than focus on a single agency. They examine the environment in which an organization operates, its actors, and cultural and ideological climate, to cover both the external and internal factors that influence a nation’s intelligence community. The result is an exhaustive, unique survey of European intelligence communities rarely discussed.

Book Venice s Secret Service

Download or read book Venice s Secret Service written by Ioanna Iordanou and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venice's Secret Service is the untold and arresting story of the world's earliest centrally-organised state intelligence service. Long before the inception of SIS and the CIA, in the period of the Renaissance, the Republic of Venice had masterminded a remarkable centrally-organised state intelligence organisation that played a pivotal role in the defence of the Venetian empire. Housed in the imposing Doge's Palace and under the direction of the Council of Ten, the notorious governmental committee that acted as Venice's spy chiefs, this 'proto-modern' organisation served prominent intelligence functions including operations (intelligence and covert action), analysis, cryptography and steganography, cryptanalysis, and even the development of lethal substances. Official informants and amateur spies were shipped across Europe, Anatolia, and Northern Africa, conducting Venice's stealthy intelligence operations. Revealing a plethora of secrets, their keepers, and their seekers, Venice's Secret Service explores the social and managerial processes that enabled their existence and that furnished the foundation for an extraordinary intelligence organisation created by one of the early modern world's most cosmopolitan states.

Book Intelligence Agencies Technology and Knowledge Production

Download or read book Intelligence Agencies Technology and Knowledge Production written by Rüdiger Bergien and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines intelligence services since 1945 in their role as knowledge producers. Intelligence agencies are producers and providers of arcane information. However, little is known about the social, cultural and material dimensions of their knowledge production, processing and distribution. This volume starts from the assumption that during the Cold War, these core activities of information services underwent decisive changes, of which scientization and computerisation are essential. With a focus on the emerging alliances between intelligence agencies, science and (computer) technology, the chapters empirically explore these transformations and are characterised by innovative combinations of intelligence history with theoretical considerations from the history of science and technology and the history of knowledge. At the same time, the book challenges the bipolarity of Cold War history in general and of intelligence history in particular in favour of comparative and transnational perspectives. The focus is not only the Soviet Union and the United States, but also Poland, Turkey, the two German states and Brazil. This approach reveals surprising commonalities across systems: time and again, the expansion and use of intelligence knowledge came up against the limits that resulted from intelligence culture itself. The book enriches our global understanding of knowledge of the state and contributes to a historical framework for the past decade of debates about the societal consequences of intelligence data processing. This book will be of much interest to students of intelligence studies, science and technology studies, security studies and International Relations.

Book The Italian Servizi Segreti Fragmented and Swayed 1900 today

Download or read book The Italian Servizi Segreti Fragmented and Swayed 1900 today written by Nicholas R. Finelli and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy, as a geographic location, has the longest recorded history of espionage and intelligence practice in the Western world. A complete and comprehensive evaluation and analysis of the intelligence services of Italy, from its unification as a set of foreign-ruled city-states to present-day, has not been undertaken or accomplished in English. This thesis fills this historical void. Additionally, this paper provides a historical recount of the Italian intelligence services: their organizational structures, their flaws and successes, and their role throughout major events in Italian history through the implementation of academic journals, news articles, and interviews in both English and Italian. Historically, the Italian intelligence apparatus has often been inefficacious and disjointed followed by periods of organizational reforms and strengthening. In the early 2000s, during one of these reformation periods, it appeared that the Italian intelligence apparatus was finally emerging from its troubled past. This emergence has recently been compromised by the rise of populism and presently the intelligence services must make a critical decision: to resemble their predecessors or begin a new effective era.
