Book excerpt: In over thirty years as one of the most original and charismatic figures in modern music, Prince Rogers Nelson has enjoyed huge success – and courted considerable controversy. Now, acclaimed rock journalist Ronin Ro chronicles both the man and his music. During the course of his journey from teenage obscurity to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Prince has provoked moral outrage, starred in a hit movie, adopted an unpronounceable symbol for a stage name, confronted record labels and fostered young talent, making a profound mark on the entertainment industry and pop culture at large. Moreover, his restless creativity has produced a string of international hits including ‘Little Red Corvette’, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘Kiss’ and ‘Cream’, and at the height of his fame the album Purple Rain was selling at a rate of a million copies a week in the US alone. Through access to an unrivalled array of witnesses to Prince’s remarkable rise, including former producers, bandmates and managers, Ronin Ro gets closer to him than any previous biographer, peeling away the masks to lay bare the story of a true modern icon.

Book excerpt: In this modern Manhattan fairytale, Prince Charming is the one conning Cinderella. Cynthia Swan knows that her life isn't a fairytale. Living in Manhattan while working long hours as an intern veterinarian by day and waiting tables at night to make ends meet has knocked the fairy dust out of her eyes. But on her way home from working an Upper East Side cocktail party Cyn meets Cameron. Prince Charming might not exist but allowing herself one night with a charming personal trainer couldn't hurt anything. Cameron Prince, CEO of Prince Enterprises, has always been skeptical about happily ever after. His father is on his eleventh divorce. If there's one thing that has taught Cameron: it's that being a billionaire brings a world of opportunities, but it makes love doubly hard to find. But one night he comes to the aid of a beautiful woman who mistakes him for a down-on-his-luck personal trainer. It seems harmless to let the fantasy play out, it's only for one night and after all there's no such thing as forever. But neither Cyn nor Cameron are satisfied with just one night. For the first time he gets to be himself with a woman without all his family baggage and she's finally found a man she can trust with her wounded heart. But as Cyn opens up and Cameron starts to think about forever, what began as an innocent case of mistaken identity becomes a guilty weight around his neck. Will Cameron be able to convince Cyn he's still worthy of her love and trust once she learns of his lies? Author's Note: Recipe for THE ICE PRINCE - Take a secret billionaire hero. Add an everyday girl heroine. A pinch of mistaken identity. A dash of one night stand. Season with a couple of quirky cats, a bunch of nosy family members, and a singing strip-o-gram with a memorable confetti climax. Finished with a heavy sprinkle of snarky, snarky banter. Steam Level: Sizzling. Shenanigan Level: Extreme. Feels: Big time. THE ICE PRINCE is part of Edwina Darke's family saga The Princes of Manhattan series. While it can easily be read as a stand-alone story, you'll likely enjoy reading the other books too.

Book excerpt: From the beginnings of big-city police work to the rise of the Mafia, Rogues' Gallery is a colorful and captivating history of crime and punishment in the bustling streets of Old New York. Rogues' Gallery is a sweeping, epic tale of two revolutions, one feeding off the other, that played out on the streets of New York City during an era known as the Gilded Age. For centuries, New York had been a haven of crime. A thief or murderer not caught in the act nearly always got away. But in the early 1870s, an Irish cop by the name of Thomas Byrnes developed new ways to catch criminals. Mug shots and daily lineups helped witnesses point out culprits; the famed rogues' gallery allowed police to track repeat offenders; and the third-degree interrogation method induced recalcitrant crooks to confess. Byrnes worked cases methodically, interviewing witnesses, analyzing crime scenes, and developing theories that helped close the books on previously unsolvable crimes. Yet as policing became ever more specialized and efficient, crime itself began to change. Robberies became bolder and more elaborate, murders grew more ruthless and macabre, and the street gangs of old transformed into hierarchal criminal enterprises, giving birth to organized crime, including the Mafia. As the decades unfolded, corrupt cops and clever criminals at times blurred together, giving way to waves of police reform at the hands of men like Theodore Roosevelt. This is a tale of unforgettable characters: Marm Mandelbaum, a matronly German-immigrant woman who paid off cops and politicians to protect her empire of fencing stolen goods; "Clubber" Williams, a sadistic policeman who wielded a twenty-six-inch club against suspects, whether they were guilty or not; Danny Driscoll, the murderous leader of the Irish Whyos Gang and perhaps the first crime boss of New York; Big Tim Sullivan, the corrupt Tammany Hall politician who shielded the Whyos from the law; the suave Italian Paul Kelly and the thuggish Jewish gang leader Monk Eastman, whose rival crews engaged in brawls and gunfights all over the Lower East Side; and Joe Petrosino, a Sicilian-born detective who brilliantly pursued early Mafioso and Black Hand extortionists until a fateful trip back to his native Italy. Set against the backdrop of New York's Gilded Age, with its extremes of plutocratic wealth, tenement poverty, and rising social unrest, Rogues' Gallery is a fascinating story of the origins of modern policing and organized crime in an eventful era with echoes for our own time.

Book In The Company Of Black Men

Download or read book In The Company Of Black Men written by Craig Steven Wilder and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the development of African-American community traditions over three centuries From the subaltern assemblies of the enslaved in colonial New York City to the benevolent New York African Society of the early national era to the formation of the African Blood Brotherhood in twentieth century Harlem, voluntary associations have been a fixture of African-American communities. In the Company of Black Men examines New York City over three centuries to show that enslaved Africans provided the institutional foundation upon which African-American religious, political, and social culture could flourish. Arguing that the universality of the voluntary tradition in African-American communities has its basis in collectivism—a behavioral and rhetorical tendency to privilege the group over the individual—it explores the institutions that arose as enslaved Africans exploited the potential for group action and mass resistance. Craig Steven Wilder’s research is particularly exciting in its assertion that Africans entered the Americas equipped with intellectual traditions and sociological models that facilitated a communitarian response to oppression. Presenting a dramatic shift from previous work which has viewed African-American male associations as derivative and imitative of white male counterparts, In the Company of Black Men provides a ground-breaking template for investigating antebellum black institutions.
