Book excerpt: Each personal history on this planet is in some way a microcosm of the total history of the whole human species. Moreover, every such microcosm, if carefully studied, brings to the observer another perspective of the total history of which it is a part. With this notion in mind we will concern ourselves with the brutalization and alienation of a young, kind, wide-eyed, innocent, intelligent, caring and loving human being.A person, who in the face of an inevitable and maliciously personalized hell not of her doing in the course of her youth, nevertheless remained immensely sane throughout her life--although bitter at the thought that our society was not yet matured enough to prevent such maliciousness.I speak of an individual true to her ideal of not thinking or behaving in accord with the barbarian model continuously forced upon her. A young child and teenager, who truly believed in the absoluteness of caring human love within a life triggered by love, for love and in love--although rejected and treated as a secret and unwanted child. This work therefore deals with love and appreciation of life, especially when accompanied with sanity and kindness, despite and in spite of the callousness and general apathy so rampant in this victim's family--which is in fact a tiny aberrant sub-segment of a rather civilized Canadian society.I speak of a sample of an attitude of self-righteousness that initially took root and burgeoned in a southwest village of the Manitoba province in Canada.A sample, nonetheless and sadly, of a still increasing attitude of self-righteousness found nearly everywhere throughout human societies and history regardless of their emotive backwardness or self-proclaimed advanced social mores and concepts. It is here expressed in the context of everyday life in the non-flamboyant ways of ordinary people. Our approach in this type of novelized biography was to display many of the trials and tribulations, a child no one wanted and resented, kept in ignorance of her situation, while coerced to suffer physically, socially and psychologically--although most of us indeed wish and insist in living our life in a reasonable context of security, sanity and a good share of the bliss that should come with it, if we possess an attitude of joy and open-mindedness.This child, sadly, was not permitted to do so.This is, therefore, a brief description of the early life of a tot, young girl and eventually a teenager, who fought against severe attacks and callous rejections, often demonstrated in numerous and various attempted murders of her mind, self-worth, intellectual stances and above all of her sanity.Yet, the simple, natural and normal ability of a child to self-actualize is in some circles crushed by exquisite acts of coarse and at times sophisticated barbarism, brutal in all its aspects, which nearly always defies explanations.Helen has been a victim of such brutality. Her story is that of a woman who throughout her early life, randomly, chaotically and according to circumstances played the role of a child, child-woman, woman-child and a woman. It was her way of first dealing with the harm done to her in order to keep her inner sanctum pure and untouched. This is a story showing society's total insensitivity toward a superb human being. One of many without a doubt.A person who, despite severe emotional and physical pains, has nevertheless remained immensely conscious and stupendously in contact with her inner-self.This is one story of two lives merged into one--the story of Helen Annette ... and Dolores Annette ... .

Book REFLECTIONS Damaged on Purpose

Download or read book REFLECTIONS Damaged on Purpose written by Dolores Maureen Pierson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This consists of small handwritten notes by Dolores Maureen Pierson gathered here to ensure that her despair would not disappear in the mist of time. Written in occasional moments of despair, when the nightmares that had been her childhood would come back and haunt her in spite of her usual bubbly personality. This author thought throughout her life about little 'Dolores', and to paraphrase her: "A little tot, raped and murdered by Pierre Pierson, whose place of birth and name was given to me, another child (two years younger), substituted in her stead-as if, I, Helen, no longer existed." "This was accomplished in order to, both, hide this awful crime, and free my birth mother, Annette Cronk, so she could continue to party, 'live her life' as she was fond of saying, and pretend until the day she died, that I did not exist (although she gave birth to two other daughters), with the complicity of her older sister-my fake mother, who contrive that I would never meet anybody in my family and I never did."

Book WORKMAN STREET Wretched Lives In A Land Of Plenty

Download or read book WORKMAN STREET Wretched Lives In A Land Of Plenty written by Jean Ovide Bourdeau and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although highlighted by a premeditated murder this is nevertheless the story of a people living a life without expectations during the Thirties, Forties and Fifties in urban ghettos of Montréal, condemned by circumstances to live a life of misery without history and future. Observed by a boy, caught up in the same poverty trap and wounded intellectually for a few years with a massive indoctrination program of servile obedience and enforced acceptance without question to a dogmatic belief system - in this case the French-Canadian medieval version of Roman Catholicism of olden days. In the end, it brings out a ray of hope by suggesting that, similar to the first group of entrepreneurs of the Beauce region - those original and inspiring 'can do' people of Québec - a generalized underground movement has at last begun an original creativity and economic development, bypassing the previous limits of language, stifling religion, and the ideological self-imposed traditional barriers to entrepreneurship and business.

Book excerpt: From the author of How Should a Person Be? (“one of the most talked-about books of the year”—Time Magazine) and the New York Times Bestseller Women in Clothes comes a daring novel about whether to have children. In Motherhood, Sheila Heti asks what is gained and what is lost when a woman becomes a mother, treating the most consequential decision of early adulthood with the candor, originality, and humor that have won Heti international acclaim and made How Should A Person Be? required reading for a generation. In her late thirties, when her friends are asking when they will become mothers, the narrator of Heti’s intimate and urgent novel considers whether she will do so at all. In a narrative spanning several years, casting among the influence of her peers, partner, and her duties to her forbearers, she struggles to make a wise and moral choice. After seeking guidance from philosophy, her body, mysticism, and chance, she discovers her answer much closer to home. Motherhood is a courageous, keenly felt, and starkly original novel that will surely spark lively conversations about womanhood, parenthood, and about how—and for whom—to live.

Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book Children Consumerism and the Common Good

Download or read book Children Consumerism and the Common Good written by Mary M. Doyle Roche and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-09-17 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children, Consumerism, and the Common Good explores the impact of consumer culture on the lives of children in the United States and globally, focusing on two phenomena: advertising to children and child labor. Christian communities have a critical role to play in securing the well-being of children and challenging the cultural trends that undermine that well-being. Themes in the tradition of Catholic social teaching can move us beyond the tensions between children's rights activists and those who propose a return to 'family values' and can inform practices of resistance, participation, and transformation. Roche argues that children are full, interdependent members of the communities of which they are a part. They have a claim on the fruits of our common life and are called to participate in that life according to their age and ability. The principle of the common good forms the benchmark for analyzing children's participation in the market and the ways in which market logic shapes other institutions of civil society, particularly educational institutions. The Cristo Rey Network of schools is highlighted as an example of institutional transformation which shapes children's participation in education and the economic life of their families and communities in a spirit of solidarity.
