The succeeding chapters deal with the applications of computers and computer-integrated engineering systems; the design standards; and materials' properties and selection. Considerable chapters are devoted to other basic knowledge in mechanical engineering, including solid mechanics, tribology, power units and transmission, fuels and combustion, and alternative energy sources. The remaining chapters explore other engineering fields related to mechanical engineering, including nuclear, offshore, and plant engineering. These chapters also cover the topics of manufacturing methods, engineering mathematics, health and safety, and units of measurements. This book will be of great value to mechanical engineers.

Book Ladle Metallurgy

Download or read book Ladle Metallurgy written by Julian Szekely and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to provide a comprehensive coverage of the important and growing field of ladle metallurgy, including theory, practice, and economics. During the past decade, major advances have been made in the secondary metallurgy of steel and other metals; indeed, secondary metallurgy, that is, the ladle treatment of molten metals, following the melting and refining steps, has become an important and inevitable part of the overall processing sequence. Ladle metallurgy is attractive because it can provide an effective means for adjusting and fine-tuning the composition and temperature of the molten products prior to solidification processing. Ladle metallurgy allows us to produce materials of very high purity and will become increasingly an essential process requirement. Indeed, many of the novel casting techniques will mandate steels of much higher cleanliness than those in current practice. Of course, ladle metallurgy or secondary metallurgy is not limited to steel; indeed, major advances have been made and are being made in the secondary processing of aluminum, aluminum alloys, and many specialty metals.

Book Intelligent Cleanness Controls in Secondary Steelmaking by Advanced Off and Online Process Models INTCLEANCON

Download or read book Intelligent Cleanness Controls in Secondary Steelmaking by Advanced Off and Online Process Models INTCLEANCON written by Borja Peña Quintero and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During this collaborative project between TECNALIA, GERDAU, BFI and DEW, the consortium has achieved the development of new off-line and on-line models for advanced control strategies in secondary metallurgy, in order to guarantee highest steel cleanness levels for high quality steels, with focus on final product cleanness case hardening steels and castability on microalloyed grades. For the case of GERDAU, a new castability index has been developed as the main measurement index of the project success. Regarding LF treatment the electrical parameters have been analysed in order to study the influential parameters on the electrical stability to correlate it with the bath stirring. This bath stirring has been studied by a CFD simulation tool for deep analysis on the influence of stirring rates on the free surface behaviour and also on the separation rates achieved on the vacuum degasser. For the ladle treatment process route of DEW a prediction model for a cleanness indicator was developed via a multi-linear regression analysis of relevant operational parameters. With the help of mathematical and physical modelling, information on optimum gas flow rate and stirring time was provided with regard to an operational window for the soft bubbling stirring process. An image-based online monitoring and control system for the stirring intensity was installed at the final treatment station. With this system also the result of the online prediction model for steel cleanness is displayed. It provides the operator with information on the required stirring intensity and duration and allows achieving optimum results with regard to steel cleanness. These new control strategies have a direct impact on the product rejection, it is the consequence of an improvement in process efficiency that directly produces a noticeable economic benefit and some other benefits more difficult to translate into Euros but important too.
