Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the experiences of secondary social studies teachers who implemented Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in history/social studies, science and technical subjects in social studies courses requiring End of Course Tests at secondary schools in one suburban district in Georgia. Ten teachers of United States history and economics courses participated in this study. Data was collected through questionnaires, reflective online journaling, documents, individual interviews, and focus groups. Analysis was conducted using transcription, thematic coding, textural and structural descriptions, and a composite description of the essence of the experiences. Findings included teachers used creative lesson plans, primary source documents, and writing to implement the literacy standards. Teachers expressed a need for professional development, concerns about students' knowledge and understanding of complex vocabulary and students' reading skills, and lack of alignment between the summative assessment instrument and the literacy standards. Economics teachers had a difficult time finding appropriate materials for the implementation.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to examine Alabama high school social studies teachers’ perceptions of the implementation of the anchor standards for reading and writing in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) framework for social studies in 2010. Using the Vaughn Attitude Scale to Measure Attitudes Toward Teaching Reading in Content Classrooms (VAS), the researcher analyzed responses from 74 Alabama high school social studies teachers and found 55% had a favorable attitude, and 12% had an unfavorable attitude toward increasing the focus on teaching literacy in their classrooms. The researcher also interviewed 10 Alabama high school social studies teachers to obtain an in-depth understanding of high school social studies teachers’ perceptions about implementing literacy skills instruction into social studies classes. Teachers reported seeing improved levels of student engagement and more evidence of higher order thinking skills from making instruction more student-centered and analyzing primary sources.

We are writing this book to demonstrate how teachers use research-based strategies to meet Common Core Standards while still focusing on students. Our goal is to help teachers visualize students in action as other teachers describe the implementation of research-based strategies in their own classrooms, show student work samples, and provide reflections of student success in achieving the standards. Many Common Core Standards books focus on the standards, but our approach focuses on strategies that engage the students in the classroom--showing how different teachers at varying grade levels have used the strategies to meet the standards. Book excerpt: The Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects lays out a role for history/social studies in the teaching of disciplinary literacy, writing, and speaking and listening. While the effects of the Standards on the teaching of English/Language Arts and Math has been a source of discussion, the impact on social studies instruction has not been studied. Through surveys (n= 217) and interviews (n=20), this explanatory sequential mixed methods study examines the practice of social studies teachers as it relates to the Standards approach to critical reading, historical inquiry, and argumentation. I also investigate the conditions that support or hinder these practices as well as access to professional development. Differences among schools in low-income communities and more affluent neighborhoods are considered as part of these lines of inquiry. My findings show that teachers in low- income schools are concerned about the academic preparedness of students to engage in Common Core activities. This is in spite of a finding that teachers in less affluent schools have a strong repertoire of literacy practices. Second, teachers are making changes to their practice. The most commonly cited change was a depth over breadth approach to the California History-Social Science Standards. Third, only a small percentage of teachers report that the Common Core Standards are integrated into the practices of teachers in their department. Thus, this study sheds light on the current practices of social studies teachers in California and the supports needed to enact the Common Core Standards.
