Book Primary and Secondary Education During Covid 19

Download or read book Primary and Secondary Education During Covid 19 written by Fernando M. Reimers and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access edited volume is a comparative effort to discern the short-term educational impact of the covid-19 pandemic on students, teachers and systems in Brazil, Chile, Finland, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. One of the first academic comparative studies of the educational impact of the pandemic, the book explains how the interruption of in person instruction and the variable efficacy of alternative forms of education caused learning loss and disengagement with learning, especially for disadvantaged students. Other direct and indirect impacts of the pandemic diminished the ability of families to support children and youth in their education. For students, as well as for teachers and school staff, these included the economic shocks experienced by families, in some cases leading to food insecurity and in many more causing stress and anxiety and impacting mental health. Opportunity to learn was also diminished by the shocks and trauma experienced by those with a close relative infected by the virus, and by the constrains on learning resulting from students having to learn at home, where the demands of schoolwork had to be negotiated with other family necessities, often sharing limited space. Furthermore, the prolonged stress caused by the uncertainty over the resolution of the pandemic and resulting from the knowledge that anyone could be infected and potentially lose their lives, created a traumatic context for many that undermined the necessary focus and dedication to schoolwork. These individual effects were reinforced by community effects, particularly for students and teachers living in communities where the multifaceted negative impacts resulting from the pandemic were pervasive. This is an open access book.

Book excerpt: This book explores what writing for pleasure means, and how it can be realised as a much-needed pedagogy whose aim is to develop children, young people, and their teachers as extraordinary and life-long writers. The approach described is grounded in what global research has long been telling us are the most effective ways of teaching writing and contains a description of the authors’ own research project into what exceptional teachers of writing do that makes the difference. The authors describe ways of building communities of committed and successful writers who write with purpose, power, and pleasure, and they underline the importance of the affective aspects of writing teaching, including promoting in apprentice writers a sense of self-efficacy, agency, self-regulation, volition, motivation, and writer-identity. They define and discuss 14 research-informed principles which constitute a Writing for Pleasure pedagogy and show how they are applied by teachers in classroom practice. Case studies of outstanding teachers across the globe further illustrate what world-class writing teaching is. This ground-breaking text is essential reading for anyone who is concerned about the current status and nature of writing teaching in schools. The rich Writing for Pleasure pedagogy presented here is a radical new conception of what it means to teach young writers effectively today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Academy, Vol. 7: A Journal of Secondary Education; February, 1892 It is true, that, under the constitution of the English universities, educational questions are not ultimately decided bv the votes of per sons who are practised in education. Nor is this anomaly one which need be regretted. It is more important that an educational ques tion affecting a large number of students should be widely and deliberately approved than that it should be rapidly efl'ected. The end of education, whether at college or at school. Is not so much learning as living. The influences of academical or scholastic life, so far as they are healthy, tend to qualify young men and boys for the practical duties of citizenship. And it is when a reform, how ever strictly intellectual, has been canvassed in a wide society for a long time, when it has won its way beyond the circle of specialists to the approval of the popular judgment, and has been found to answer the needs of men in the world, that it is ripe for acceptance and, if it is accepted, wrll produce beneficent results. Book Secondary Education Issues and Challenges

Download or read book Secondary Education Issues and Challenges written by Hans V. Knudsen and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondary education is the final stage of compulsory education, preceded by primary education and followed by higher education. It is characterised by transition from the typically compulsory, comprehensive primary education for minors to the optional, selective tertiary, 'post-secondary', or 'higher' education (e.g., university, vocational school) for adults. Depending on the system, schools for this period or a part of it may be called secondary schools, high schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, middle schools, colleges, vocational schools and preparatory schools, and the exact meaning of any of these varies between the systems. The exact boundary between primary and secondary education varies from country to country and even within them, but is generally around the fifth to the tenth year of education. Secondary education occurs mainly during the teenage years. In the United States and Canada primary and secondary education together are sometimes referred to as K-12 education. The purpose of secondary education can be to give common knowledge, to prepare for either higher education or vocational education, or to train directly for a profession. This new book presents the latest research in the field.

Book The School Review Vol 15

Download or read book The School Review Vol 15 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Review, Vol. 15: A Journal of Secondary Education; June, 1907 The case that we seek to establish would not be complete without the suggestion that the culture value of humanistic study should not be overlooked in the consideration of what should be the training of the prospective lawyer. We are too apt to forget. In these intensely practical times, that the professional man should be first of all the well-educated gentleman. The lawyer should be more than a lawyer, the physician more than a physician, the engineer more than an engineer. Each should have an educational basis that fits him for something outside of, and beyond, his profession. I would not for a moment claim that a man cannot be well educated without a knowledge of the ancient Classics, for such is not the fact, but that humanistic study stimulates the mind to seek what is best in literature and art, and furnishes a source of culture and entertainment that broadens the man, and enables him to have an appreciative sense of the value of things outside of the narrow limits of his specialty, cannot admit of doubt.
