Download or read book Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-09-22 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Carter's 1980 declaration of a state of emergency at Love Canal, New York, recognized that residents' health had been affected by nearby chemical waste sites. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, enacted in 1976, ushered in a new era of waste management disposal designed to protect the public from harm. It required that modern waste containment systems use "engineered" barriers designed to isolate hazardous and toxic wastes and prevent them from seeping into the environment. These containment systems are now employed at thousands of waste sites around the United States, and their effectiveness must be continually monitored. Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers assesses the performance of waste containment barriers to date. Existing data suggest that waste containment systems with liners and covers, when constructed and maintained in accordance with current regulations, are performing well thus far. However, they have not been in existence long enough to assess long-term (postclosure) performance, which may extend for hundreds of years. The book makes recommendations on how to improve future assessments and increase confidence in predictions of barrier system performance which will be of interest to policy makers, environmental interest groups, industrial waste producers, and industrial waste management industry.
Download or read book Handbook of Double Containment Piping Systems written by Christopher Ziu and published by McGraw-Hill Professional Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huge Treasury of Double Containment Piping Data Handbook of Double Containment Piping Systems, by Christopher G. Ziu, arms you with all the data you need for designing and planning virtually every type of double containment system--with complete confidence. Packed with the latest concepts, engineering issues, and rules of design and installation, it takes you step-bystep through construction of both under and aboveground systems--serving up plenty of real-world examples and highly detailed illustrations--so you can ensure optimal performance under even the harshest conditions. You'll have everything you need for: layout, thermal expansion, and structural considerations; fabrication, assembly, and erection; leak detection; inspection, examination, and testing; trenchless reconstruction and alternatives to double containement piping; associated storage tanks and pressure vessels; fluid dynamics and sizing criteria; design of primary metallic, nonmetallic, and secondary containment components; system selection; materials; heat transfer.
Download or read book High Containment Laboratories written by Ann Wright and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. laboratories working with dangerous biological pathogens (commonly referred to as high-containment laboratories) have proliferated in recent years. As a result, the public is concerned about the oversight of these laboratories. The deliberate or accidental release of biological pathogens can have disastrous consequences. This report determines: (1) to what extent, and in what areas, the number of high-containment laboratories has increased in the U.S.; (2) which federal agency is responsible for tracking this expansion and determining the associated aggregate risks; and (3) lessons learned from highly publicized incidents at these laboratories and actions taken by the regulatory agencies. Charts and tables.

Book excerpt: Trust NFPA 30's protocols to minimize the hazards of flammable and combustible liquids. Adopted by most states and enforceable under OSHA, NFPA 30: Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code presents the best guidance on the safe storage, handling, and use of dangerous liquids. It provides the criteria you need to design facilities for better protection, comply with sprinkler rules, and use safe operating practices. Changes and additions in the 2003 edition affect: * Siting of storage tanks * Spill control, normal breather vents, and emergency relief vents for storage tanks * Design of liquids storage cabinets, inside storage areas, and liquid warehouses * Sprinkler design rules for storage of all types of liquids * And more When you work with flammable and combustible liquids, even a seemingly minor oversight or mistake can have major repercussions. Don't compromises safety--insist on NFPA 30!
