This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises an edited selection of papers which were originally presented at the 9th International Conference of the History of Adult Education that was held in Leiden in September 2002. The theme of that conference and this volume addresses the key dynamics associated with the impact of globalisation upon both the historical and contemporary development of the organisation of adult learning. Following a general introduction to the key themes by the chief editor, the first section of the volume comprises a number of papers of a distinctly historical nature. The focus in this section is upon the development of organised adult learning as a major component of the European modernisation project from the Enlightenment period in the eighteenth century to the twentieth century. The second section examines contemporary developments and the emergence of new forms for the organisation of adult learning in the learning society. The emphasis here is upon those societal developments that contribute to the centrality of lifelong learning in current education and training policies. The third section comprises a number of country studies focused upon the dilemmas associated with the restructuring of national education and training policies. Issues of social inclusion and the risk of exclusion form the recurring theme of these country studies.

Book Adult Learning in a World at Risk

Download or read book Adult Learning in a World at Risk written by Ursula Giere and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging adult education policies and strategies were studied through a survey of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) member states, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and social partners. Questionnaires were returned by 93 countries and 12 NGOs. The study focused on the following: social change and its impact on adult education since 1985; adult education around the world; trends in adult learning around the world; formal and nonformal adult basic education; adult literacy; adult learning and the technological revolution; vocational training for adults; education toward a culture of peace; education for a democratic, civil society; education and the all-round development of all individuals; formulation of a broader vision of adult learning; integration of adult learning into the lifelong learning system; the changing role of the state, universities, and NGOs; the strengthening of cooperative structures; new ways of financing adult education; and UNESCO's role in the future of adult learning. Despite differences in individual respondents' opinions regarding how adult education goals should be prioritized and reached, there was general consensus that adult learning must be integrated into the lifelong learning system and no longer viewed only as a second chance for disadvantaged individuals, a means of reaching the unreached, or tool to provide skills to the unskilled. • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Education for Adults written by Malcolm Tight and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of adult education at individual, group and community levels is the concern of this book. Definitions and patterns of adult learning are critically assessed in both this country and abroad, and the processes involved considered in detail. Both case studies and thematic articles have been included and are selected to illustrate the breadth of the field along a number of areas: formal, non-formal and informal education; face-to-face and distance education; from basic levels of education to higher education; from highly deterministic to more ‘open’ or self-directed forms of education. It is felt that the study and practice of the education of adults can be best advanced by the adoption of such a broad view.
