Book Nonstructural Ice Control

Download or read book Nonstructural Ice Control written by Robert B. Haehnel and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonstructural ice control measures are used for reducing the frequency and severity of ice jam damages that do not rely on the use of a structure placed in the river. This report is a comprehensive review of current nonstructural ice control methods in use. Both advance measures and emergency response methods are addressed. where possible, the effectiveness of these methods has been assessed, and cost of application has been tabulated. In terms of development, some of these are still in their infancy, while others are well advanced in terms of available guidance and field experience. Nonstructural methods can be used to extend the operating envelope of structural measures and can play a role in an ice control strategy that uses both structural and nonstructural components to provide the desired results. There is little guidance currently available to predict the reduction in ice jam potential due to application of any of these measures. Further work in this area should focus on developing governing relationships that relate ice and river properties and meteorological conditions to ice jam potential and severity.

Book Mechanical Ice Drilling Technology

Download or read book Mechanical Ice Drilling Technology written by Pavel G. Talalay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a review of mechanical ice drilling technology, including the design, parameters, and performance of various tools and drills for making holes in snow, firn and ice. The material presents the historical development of ice drilling tools and devices from the first experience taken place more than 170 years ago to the present day and focuses on the modern vision of ice drilling technology. It is illustrated with numerous pictures, many of them published for the first time. This book is intended for specialists in ice core sciences, drilling engineers, glaciologists, and can be useful for high-school students and other readers who are very interested in engineering and cold regions technology.

Book Ground Improvement Second Edition

Download or read book Ground Improvement Second Edition written by Michael P. Moseley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-02-03 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing need to redevelop land in urban areas has led to major development in the field of ground improvement, a process that is continuing and expanding. Vibratory deep compaction and grouting techniques have also been increasingly applied to solving the problems of urban development, whether from tunnelling, excavation, building renovation or bearing capacity improvement and settlement reduction. The second edition of this well established book continues to provide an international overview of the major techniques in use. Comprehensively updated in line with recent developments, each chapter is written by an acknowledged expert in the field. Ground Improvements is written for geotechnical and civil engineers, and for contractors working in grouting, ground improvement, piling and environmental engineering.
