Book The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit

Download or read book The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit written by Heike Missler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chick lit is the marketing label attributed to a surge of books published in the wake of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary (1996) and Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City (1997). Branded by their pink or pastel-coloured book covers, chick-lit novels have been a highly successful and ubiquitous product of women's popular culture since the late 1990s. This study traces the evolution of chick lit not only as a genre of popular fiction, but as a cultural phenomenon. It complicates the genealogy of the texts by situating them firmly in the context of age-old debates about female literary creation, and by highlighting the dynamics of the popular-fiction market. Offering a convincing dissection of the formula which lies at the heart of chick lit, as well as in-depth analyses of a number of chick-lit titles ranging from classic to more recent and edgier texts, this book yields new insights into a relatively young field of academic study. Its close readings provide astute assessments of chick lit's notoriously skewed representational politics, especially with regard to sexuality and ethnicity, which feed into current discussions about postfeminism. Moreover, the study makes a unique contribution to the scholarly debate of chick lit by including an analysis of the (online) fan communities the genre has fostered. The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit weaves a sound methodological network, drawing on reader-response criticism; feminist, gender, and queer theory; affect studies; and whiteness studies. This book is an accessible and engaging study for anyone interested in postfeminism and popular culture.

Book excerpt: Blurb This book includes eleven incredible and magnificent love stories with compelling, intense and intriguing characters. These are the characters that we come across everywhere and their wonderful and untold journeys have been captured with immense delight in the form of several captivating plots. There are stories we don’t want to share or talk about due to peer pressure or the fear of backlash from society. Sometimes, the story itself is quite painful, or it is too bold and depicts the unconcealed complexities or the reality of modern times. Nonetheless, the urge to give voice to these stories are insuppressible. As Maya Angelou’s said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” We all have come across love and deception in different forms, and the most thrilling or heart-wrenching aspects of falling in and out of love are those initial waves or their meetings at the crossroads of life, which have been put forth enthrallingly. A lady showing exemplary fortitude at the dead-end of the night or an old lady regaining her composure and surviving vicious deceit are some of the highlights. These stories are not only about deception, retribution and hurt, but they are also about celebrating the bounties of love, friendship and hope that life has to offer. About the author This is the author’s introductory book—a compilation of compelling and fascinating tales of life. Book Pragmatic Stylistics

Download or read book Pragmatic Stylistics written by Elizabeth Black and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a study of the language of literary texts. It looks at the usefulness of pragmatic theories to the interpretation of literary texts and surveys methods of analysing narrative, with special attention given to narratorial authority and character focalisation. The book includes a description of Grice's Co-operative Principle and its contribution to the interpretation of literary texts, and considers Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory, with particular stress on the valuable insights into irony and varieties of indirect discourse it offers. Bakhtin's theories are introduced, and related to the more explicitly linguistic Relevance Theory. Metaphor, irony and parody are examined primarily as pragmatic phenomena, and there is a strand of sociolinguistic interest particularly in relation to the theories of Labov and Bakhtin.

A MAN CANNOT CRY is the finest first novel I have ever handled (including THE COLLECTOR by John Fowles, and THE WATER IS WIDE by Pat Conroy). Close to 50 years in publishing as a writer, editor and agent and I have never heard such a story of how a relatively uneducated girl of eighteen in a little copper mining town in Northern Rhodesia, married to a miner, began a powerful first novel of 500,000 words (before cutting), and spent years writing it under the most amazing circum- stances. I have never been as overwhelmed by a first novel. She is simply a born story teller. Julian Bach, New York Agent and a former editor of LIFE magazine. Gloria, you have a wonderful novel here. It moved me to tears and its editing has been a labor of love for me. A Man Cannot Cry has given me great pleasure and I thank you for it. Eventually the world will too. A MAN CANNOT CRY dramatizes all the conflicts and parallels between the white world and the black, the old Africa and the new, the familiar and the alien, the uncertain fears of the mind and the sure knowledge of the heart. Book For Love and Money the Literary Art of the Harlequin Mills and Boon Romance

Download or read book For Love and Money the Literary Art of the Harlequin Mills and Boon Romance written by Laura Vivanco and published by Humanities-Ebooks. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Vivanco's study challenges the idea that Harlequin Mills & Boon romances are merely mass-produced commodities, churned out in accordance with a strict and unchanging formula. She argues that many are well-written, skilfully crafted works, and that some are small masterpieces. For Love and Money demonstrates the variety that exists beneath the covers of Harlequin Mills & Boon romances. They range from paranormal romances to novels resembling chick lit, and many have addressed serious issues, including the plight of post-Second World War refugees, threats to marine mammals, and HIV/AIDS. The genre draws inspiration from Shakespearean comedies and Austen's novels, as well as from other forms of popular culture. "“Laura Vivanco’s 'For Love and Money' is an impressive study of the popular fiction of Harlequin Mills and Boon that is a must read for any student of popular fiction and for those who write and love the genre” —Liz Fielding, author of over 50 Harlequin Mills & Boon romances.“Deep learning, wide reading, and clear thinking are very much in evidence in Vivanco’s exploration of HM&B. A welcome addition to popular romance criticism.” — Professor Pamela Regis, author of 'A Natural History of the Romance Novel'."Laura Vivanco’s analysis of the category romance is both meticulous and inspiring. And while Vivanco limits her examples and discussions to category romances by Harlequin Mills & Boon and the HQN imprint, her application of Frye’s mimetic modes begs for expansion to texts and authors across the genre. This piece of literary criticism should serve as a template for romance scholars to move from defending the genre to discussing its values and complexity as a literary art. — Maryan Wherry, 'Journal of Popular Romance Studies'

Book excerpt: This is the first history of Mills & Boon, the British publishing phenomenon which has become a household name, synonymous with romantic fiction. On the firm's 90th anniversary, Joseph McAleer has written the first history of Mills & Boon, drawing upon a long-lost archive of over 50,000 letters which reveal the intricate relationship between editorial policy, social attitudes, and sales. McAleer examines the dictates of the Mills & Boon formula and demonstrates how novels were 'Managed' by the firm to ensure maximum sales and to nurture a cadre of loyal readers in Britain and throughout the Commonwealth. The result is a cultural phenomenon whose 'product' reflected the attitudes and morals of the age while offering women an addictive escape from everyday life. It's a fascinating read for anyone who's ever wondered about writing a Mills & Boon, or wants to understand the story behind one of the most successful British firms of the twentieth century.
