Download or read book The Making of an Alienated Generation written by Sai-Wing Leung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume examines the political apathy of the Hong Kong Chinese, with a particular focus on children in secondary schools. While most previous studies have been of adults, Leung’s approach exposes a generation who are politically uninvolved and disenchanted. He examines teacher-student encounters in a depoliticized school context and through a curriculum in which explicit political content is absent. The study throws light both on Chinese youths and the interaction of older and younger generations, and its macroscopic implications are distinctly ominous, suggesting trouble ahead for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Download or read book Education and Society in Hong Kong and Macao written by M. Bray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Kong and Macao have much in common. The dominant populations in both territories are Cantonese-speaking Chinese; both are small in area; both are urban societies; both have been colonies of European powers; and both have undergone political transition to reunification with China. Yet in education, for reasons that are analysed in this book, they are very different. The patters of similarities and differences in the two territories make a fascinating basis for comparative study. The overarching theme of the book, on continuity and change is particularly pertinent following the transition of the two societies of the postcolonial era. This thoroughly-revised and expanded second edition builds on the widely-acclaimed first edition. The work has been recognised as a significant contribution to the broad field of comparative education as well as to study of the specific societies which are its main focus.

Download or read book Citizenship Education And The Modern State written by Kerry Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizenship education has recently re-emerged as an important issue, both in policy and in practice. As the nation state undergoes rapid transformation at the end of the 20th century, both Eastern and Western states have focused attention on using the school curriculum as a medium for sustaining cohesion and unity within society. But, as we approach the 21st century, is the possibility of a common citizenship a reality?; This book is designed to provide educators with access to ideas and information that will help them to understand current citizenship- education initiatives across a number of countries. It provides a theoretical rationale in which to consider those issues; illustrates how such issues are being worked out in practice in a number of countries; and provides assistance for policy makers, teacher educators and teachers who are responsible for making decisions about the context of citizenship education programmes for schools.
Download or read book Teachers Work and Emotions written by Kwok Kuen Tsang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a teacher is often thought of as an emotionally fulfilling job, with many positive experiences in watching students grow and mature. However, as Tsang’s research shows, there are plenty of negative emotional experiences in this line of work as well. Given the recent attention towards mental health and well-being, this book addresses these negative experiences and provides recommendations for dealing with them. Focusing on teachers in Hong Kong, Tsang investigates the social mechanisms that arouse such negative emotional experiences, otherwise known as caam2. He asserts that these feelings are socially constructed, and it is only by understanding the causes and feelings can we begin to improve teachers’ emotional well-being and teaching quality. Using a theoretical framework based on a critical review and synthesis of five existing perspectives, including labor process perspective, school administration perspective, emotional labor perspective, social interaction perspective, and teacher identity perspective, Tsang does precisely that, exploring the social process of these emotional experiences and the interplay between teacher agency and social structure. These findings go a long way in ameliorating teacher experiences all over the world.

Download or read book Education Democracy and Development written by Raymond Ryba and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selected number of papers which were fIrst presented at the VIllth World Congress of Comparative Education in Prague, July 8--14, 1992. The Executive Committee of the World Council of Comparative and Education Societies had gladly accepted the bid made by the (at that time still united) Czech and Slovak Comparative Education Society to organise this congress in their beautiful and historic capital. The choice of Prague, underlined by President Vaclav Havel's patronage, as well as the Congress theme, were intended as a demonstration of the (re-)opened communication among educationists allover the world, as a result of the peaceful upheavals ('velvet revolutions') which were awakening the countries of Central, South East and East Europe in those days. It is true that a good part of the en thusiasm has faded since then and given way to manifestations of disenchantment. Education can be regarded as a striking example of the recent developments between "euphoria" and "normalcy".
