Book Second Language Spanish Intonation Systemic and Realizational Dimensions of Its Acquisition

Download or read book Second Language Spanish Intonation Systemic and Realizational Dimensions of Its Acquisition written by Jorge Alejandro Mendez Seijas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total of 82 Spanish learners of various proficiency levels participated in one of two studies that explored the acquisition of intonation in two different contexts: classroom (beginning, n =18; intermediate, n =21; and advanced, n =24) and study abroad (advanced, n = 19). I examined the acquisition of prenuclear F0 peak alignment, the phonetic mapping of final boundary tones, and pitch range phenomena. The results indicate that the LILt is a useful and valuable theoretical tool to analyze L2 intonation data. In my discussion, I detail how the theoretical analyses that this model allows have helped to clarify, at least to some extent, why some of the parameters under investigation (e.g., the mapping of boundary tones) appear to be more difficult to acquire than others (e.g., prenuclear peak alignment).

Book L2 Spanish and Italian intonation

Download or read book L2 Spanish and Italian intonation written by Andrea Pešková and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to contribute to our understanding of the acquisition of second language intonation, by comparing Czech learners of Spanish with German learners of Spanish and Czech learners of Italian. By means of a large production database, the study seeks to uncover how L1-to-L2 intonational transfer works and what role prosodic (dis)similarities between languages play. Contrary to most previous research, the work presents an original multidirectional cross-linguistic comparison and examines different types of sentence, such as neutral and non-neutral statements, yes/no questions, wh-questions, exclamatives and vocatives. The findings reveal positive and negative transfer from L1 to L2, and the formation of mixed patterns as well as native-like patterns, which are mainly constrained by linguistic factors such as the type of sentence and the position of the tonal event in the utterance. The results are discussed within Mennen’s (2015) L2 Intonation Learning theory and lead to the formulation of a Developmental L2 Intonation Hypothesis that makes several generalizations to characterize interlanguage intonation. This volume not only represents a step forward in the study of the acquisition of L2 intonation in general but also offers valuable findings that can be directly or indirectly applied in the classroom and will hopefully inspire further research.

Book The Acquisition of Spanish

Download or read book The Acquisition of Spanish written by Silvina A. Montrul and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-12-23 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the acquisition of Spanish that provides a state-of-the-art comprehensive overview of Spanish morphosyntactic development in monolingual and bilingual situations. Its content is organized around key grammatical themes that form the empirical base of research in generative grammar: nominal and verbal inflectional morphology, subject and object pronouns, complex structures involving movement (topicalizations, questions, relative clauses), and aspects of verb meaning that have consequences for syntax. The book argues that Universal Grammar constrains all instances of language acquisition and that there is a fundamental continuity between monolingual, bilingual, child and adult early grammatical systems. While stressing their similarities with respect to linguistic representations and processes, the book also considers important differences between these three acquisition situations with respect to the outcome of acquisition. It is also shown that many linguistic properties of Spanish are acquired earlier than in English and other languages. This book is a must read for those interested in the acquisition of Spanish from different theoretical perspectives as well as those working on the acquisition of other languages in different contexts.

Book The Development of Past Tense Morphology in L2 Spanish

Download or read book The Development of Past Tense Morphology in L2 Spanish written by M. Rafael Salaberry and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-02-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an extended analysis of the development of L2 Spanish past tense morphology among L1 English-speaking learners. The study addresses three major questions: (1) what is the developmental pattern of acquisition of past tense verbal morphology among tutored learners? (2) what are the relevant factors that may account for the particular distribution of morphological endings (especially at the beginning stages)?, and (3) how does instruction affect the movement from one stage to the next? The analysis provides a reassessment of the general claim of Andersen’s lexical aspect hypothesis and proposes minor changes that may render the hypothesis more appropriate for, especially, L2 classroom learning. The study includes an overview of theoretical positions on the notion of lexical versus grammatical aspect, and a comparison of the findings from previous empirical studies on the development of past tense verbal morphology among both classroom and naturalistic learners.

Book Moving Across Languages

Download or read book Moving Across Languages written by Alberto Hijazo-Gascón and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyzes the complex relationship between languages in the bilingual mind with a focus on motion event typology and the acquisition of Spanish as a second language (L2). The author starts out by examining L1 patterns which are transferred to less complex L2 systems. The data discussed was elicited by German learners of Spanish. A similar transfer is observed when L1 is typologically and genetically close, as in the case of French and Italian learners of Spanish. Furthermore, the author clarifies the relevance of intra-typological differences within the same linguistic family, including important differences in the lexicalization patterns of Italian with respect to French and Spanish. The findings contribute to our understanding of the field of motion event typology and thinking-for-speaking. The book demonstrates that conceptual transfer is present in different aspects of the motion lexicalization domain. Interestingly, there are some challenging aspects both for speakers whose first language is typologically different and for those whose language is typologically close. The book offers suggestions on how these challenges in the restructuring of meaning in L2 can be addressed in language teaching. Specifically, pedagogical translation and mediation present promising pathways to the strengthening of semantic competences in the L2.

Book Language Development and Disorders in Spanish speaking Children

Download or read book Language Development and Disorders in Spanish speaking Children written by Alejandra Auza Benavides and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-12 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prominent researchers from the US, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Spain contribute experimental reports on language development of children who are acquiring Spanish. The chapters cover a wide range of dimensions in acquisition: comprehension and production; monolingualism and bilingualism; typical development, children who are at risk and children with language disorders, phonology, semantics, and morphosyntax. These studies will inform linguistic theory development in clinical linguistics as well as offer insights on how language works in relation to cognitive functions that are associated with when children understand or use language. The unique data from child language offer perspectives that cannot be drawn from adult language. The first part is dedicated to the acquisition of Spanish as a first or second language by typically-developing children, the second part offers studies on children who are at risk of language delays, and the third part focuses on children with specific language impairment, disorders and syndromes.

Book Prosody and Language in Contact

Download or read book Prosody and Language in Contact written by Elisabeth Delais-Roussarie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides new insights into various issues on prosody in contact situations, contact referring here to the L2 acquisition process as well as to situations where two language systems may co-exist. A wide array of phenomena are dealt with (prosodic description of linguistic systems in contact situations, analysis of prosodic changes, language development processes, etc.), and the results obtained may give an indication of what is more or less stable in phonological and prosodic systems. In addition, the selected papers clearly show how languages may have influenced or may have been influenced by other language varieties (in multilingual situations where different languages are in constant contact with one another, but also in the process of L2 acquisition). Unlike previous volumes on related topics, which focus in general either on L2 acquisition or on the description and analyses of different varieties of a given language, this volume considers both topics in parallel, allowing comparison and discussion of the results, which may shed new light on more far-reaching theoretical questions such as the role of markedness in prosody and the causes of prosodic changes.

Book Verbal Morphology in Second Language Spanish Acquisition

Download or read book Verbal Morphology in Second Language Spanish Acquisition written by Juan Pablo Rodríguez Prieto and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accuracy scores for the irregular and stem change verb forms were significantly higher in the advanced learners when compared to those by the beginning learners, especially for high frequency items. Finally, overregularizations showed the incorrect attachment of two mental rules based on verb class, not simply the most frequent regular rule encountered in the input. This is the first study providing support in favor of a shift of reliance from the declarative to the procedural memory system by late L2 learners in the computation of regular verb forms only. Both a mental lexicon and a mental grammar seem to explain better the results found in the present study than purely memorization or associative memory effects.
