Download or read book Diet Food Web and Structure of the Fish Community Lower Slave River June to December 1994 and May to August 1995 written by Ross Franklin Tallman and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the diet, food web, and seasonal changes in structure of the fish community of the lower Slave River as revealed in sampling studies using gill nets, seines, and set lines used June-December 1994 and May-August 1995. Diet was determined by direct examination and classification of dietary items for the 18 fish species collected, using the percent occurrence method. Catch per unit effort was also calculated for the species. Discussion of results includes summaries of fish life cycles and identification of potential risks of biomagnification effects.

Book Synthesis of Fish Distribution Movements Critical Habitat and Food Web for the Lower Slave River North of the 60th Parallel

Download or read book Synthesis of Fish Distribution Movements Critical Habitat and Food Web for the Lower Slave River North of the 60th Parallel written by Ross Franklin Tallman and published by Canadian Government Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NTBS was designed to address the ecological concerns about pulp mill expansion, and to increase scientific knowledge about environmental conditions [ecology, ecosystem sustainability, water pollution and control, habitat, effect on fish and fishing, etc.] in the major river systems of the north. The study's objectives were to gather and interpret sound scientific information about the basins, develop appropriate recommendations for basin management, and communicate effectively with the public. The government response report confirms the governments' commitment to ecosystem sustainability and to pollution control in northern rivers. First Nations and Metis aboriginal [native] peoples contributed significantly to the NRBS.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report characterises the variation in life history traits important to biological productivity in two of the key fish species in the Lower Slave River: inconnu and burbot, both piscivorous throughout most of their lives, abundant in the river, and important for both commercial and Aboriginal subsistence harvest. Specifically, the report describes size at age, the seasonal pattern of sexual maturity development with time, age at maturity, size and age-specific fecundity, and the population age structure of those two species.

Book The Ecology of River Systems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bryan R. Davies
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 9401732906
  • Pages : 788 pages

Download or read book The Ecology of River Systems written by Bryan R. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the ecology of running waters has come a long way during the past few years. From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large.

Book Historical Changes in Large River Fish Assemblages of the Americas

Download or read book Historical Changes in Large River Fish Assemblages of the Americas written by John N. Rinne and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic changes have occurred in the functioning of larger rivers because of social values and policies, land use, inchannel causes, and alien species. These changes have resulted in the reduction in range and abundance of many native fish species. This book describes the historical changes observed in the fish assemblages of 27 large rivers in North, Central, and South America. A synthesizing chapter highlights common and distinct patterns among the rivers and their stressors. The book focuses on entire fish assemblages, including the many species that do not enter fisheries. It will be of interest to both fishery biologists and aquatic ecologists who are concerned with the status and trends in biodiversity and biointegrity. Contains historical information as well as new research and monitoring results, including research on metapopulations, genetics, and life history strategies.

Book The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia

Download or read book The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia written by J. D. McPhail and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2007-09-28 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threat of deteriorating habitats and a loss of biodiversity make this reference work on the freshwater fishes of British Columbia more necessary than ever before. Eighty-one comprehensive species accounts aid accurate identification and consist of an illustration, the scientific and common names of the fish, its distinguishing characteristics, taxonomic comments, geographic distribution, a life-history summary, a habitat-use summary, and conservation comments. The book is a critical resource for biologists, naturalists, management and conservation officers, anglers, and members of the public who are concerned about our natural heritage. Foreword by Joseph S. Nelson.

Download or read book The Patch written by Chris Turner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In its heyday, the oil sands represented an industrial triumph and the culmination of a century of innovation, experiment, engineering, policy, and finance. Fort McMurray was a boomtown, the centre of a new gold rush, and the oil sands were reshaping the global energy, political, and financial landscapes. The future seemed limitless for the city and those who drew their wealth from the bitumen-rich wilderness. But in 2008, a new narrative for the oil sands emerged. As financial markets collapsed and the scientific reality of the Patch's effect on the environment became clear, the region turned into a boogeyman and a lightning rod for the global movement combatting climate change. Suddenly, the streets of Fort McMurray were the front line of a high-stakes collision between two conflicting worldviews--one of industrial triumph and another of environmental stewardship--each backed by major players on the world stage. The Patch is the seminal account of this ongoing conflict, showing just how far the oil sands reaches into all of our lives. From Fort Mac to the Bakken shale country of North Dakota, from Houston to London, from Saudi Arabia to the shores of Brazil, the whole world is connected in this enterprise. And it requires us to ask the question: In order to both fuel the world and to save it, what do we do about the Patch?"--
