Book Large Space Structures Dynamics and Control

Download or read book Large Space Structures Dynamics and Control written by S.N. Atluri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is intended to provide a snapshot of the status and opportunities for advan cement in the technologies of dynamics and control oflarge flexible spacecraft structures. It is a reflection ofthe serious dialog and assessments going on all over the world, across a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, as we contemplate the next major milestone in mankind's romance with space: the transition from exploration and experimentation to commercial and defense exploitation. This exploitation is already in full swing in the space communications area. Both military and civilian objectives are being pursued with increasingly more sophisticated systems such as large antenna reflectors with active shape control. Both the NATO and Warsaw pact alliances are pursuing permanent space stations in orbit: large structural systems whose development calls for in-situ fabrication and/or assembly and whose operation will demand innovations in controls technology. The last ten years have witnessed a fairly brisk research activity in the dynamics and control oflarge space structures in orderto establish a technology base forthe development of advanced spacecraft systems envisioned for the future. They have spanned a wide spectrum of activity from fundamental methods development to systems concept studies and laboratory experimentation and demonstrations. Some flight experiments have also been conducted for various purposes such as the characterization of the space enviroment, durability of materials and devices in that environment, assembly and repair operations, and the dynamic behavior of flexible structures. It is this last area that has prompted this monogram.

Book The Dynamics and Control of Large Flexible Space Structures

Download or read book The Dynamics and Control of Large Flexible Space Structures written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics and attitude and shape control of very large, inherently flexible spacecraft systems were investigated. Increasingly more complex examples were examined, beginning with a uniform free-free beam, next a free-free uniform plate/platform and finally by considering a thin shallow spherical shell structure in orbit. The effects devices were modeled. For given sets of assumed actuator locations, the controllability of these systems was first established. Control laws for each of the actuators were developed based on decoupling techniques (including distributed modal control) pole placement algorithms and a application of the linear regulator problem for optical control theory. Book Multibody Dynamics and Control of Tethered Spacecraft Systems

Download or read book Multibody Dynamics and Control of Tethered Spacecraft Systems written by Gangqiang Li and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This doctoral research conducts high-fidelity multiphysics modeling for tethered spacecraft systems, such as electrodynamic tether systems, electric solar wind sail systems, and tether transportation systems with climbers. Two models are developed based on nodal position finite element method. The first model deals with the tethered spacecraft system with fixed length tether, while the second model deals with the tethered spacecraft system with variable tether length using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian description. First, the nodal position finite element method is applied to model the orbital motion of tethered spacecraft systems with fixed tether length over a prolonged period. A Symplectic integration scheme is employed to attenuate the accumulation of error in the numerical analysis due to the long-term integration for tethered spacecraft systems, such as the space debris deorbit by electrodynamic tethers. A high fidelity multiphysics model is developed for electrodynamic tether systems by considering elastic, thermal, and electrical coupling effects of the tether. Most importantly, the calculation of electron collection by the electrodynamic tether is coupled with the tether libration and flexible deformation, where the orbital motion limited theory for electron collection is discretized simultaneously by the same finite element mesh used for the elastodynamic analysis of tether. The model is then used to investigate dynamics and libration stability of bare electrodynamic tethers in deorbiting end-of-mission spacecraft. Second, the model of tethered spacecraft system with fixed tether length is extended for the modeling of electric solar wind sail systems. The coupling effect of orbital and self-spinning motions of electric solar wind sail systems is investigated together with the interaction between the axial/transverse elastic motion of tether and Coulomb force. A modified throttling control algorithm is implemented in the finite element scheme to control the attitude motion of electric solar wind sail systems through the electric voltage modulation of main tethers. Third, the model of tethered spacecraft with variable tether length is applied to handle the tether length variation in tether transportation systems. The tether length variation results from the climber moving along tether and deployment and retrieval of tether at end spacecraft. The dynamic behavior of tether transportation systems with single or multiple climbers in characterized and the effectiveness of libration suppression scheme is tested by the high-fidelity model.

Book Global Space Governance An International Study

Download or read book Global Space Governance An International Study written by Ram S. Jakhu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the Global Space Governance study commissioned by the 2014 Montreal Declaration that called upon civil society, academics, governments, the private sector, and other stakeholders to undertake an international interdisciplinary study. The study took three years to complete. It examines the drivers of space regulations and standards, key regulatory problems, and especially addresses possible improvements in global space governance. The world's leading experts led the drafting of chapters, with input from academics and knowledgeable professionals in the public and private sectors, intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations from all the regions of the world with over 80 total participants. This book and areas identified for priority action are to be presented to the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and it is hoped will be considered directly or indirectly at the UNISPACE+50 event in Vienna, Austria, in 2018. The report, a collective work of all the contributors, includes objective analysis and frank statements expressed without pressure of political, national, and occupational concerns or interest. It is peer-reviewed and carefully edited to ensure its accuracy, preciseness, and readability. It is expected that the study and derivative recommendations will form the basis for deliberations and decisions at international conferences and meetings around the world on the theme of global space governance. This will hopefully include future discussion at the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

Book Space Tethers and Space Elevators

Download or read book Space Tethers and Space Elevators written by Michel van Pelt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel van Pelt explains for the first time the principle of space tethers: what they are and how they can be used in space. He introduces non-technical space enthusiasts to the various possibilities and feasibility of space tethers including the technological challenges and potential benefits. He illustrates how, because of their inherent simplicity, space tethers have the potential to make space travel much cheaper, while ongoing advances in tether material technology may make even seemingly far-fetched ideas a reality in the not too distant future.
