This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economy is getting better, but may still wonder, aWhere are the jobs?a A must-read for every working American, this groundbreaking analysis of the global trade system convicts afree tradea on its capitalist merits. Service jobs once believed insulated from international competition are moving overseas in droves and leaving behind millions of middle-class workers even as a second tech boom blooms anew in Bangalore. Despite this dark and frank assessment, there is cause for hope. Far from an anti-globalization screed or a tried-out exercise in protectionism, Second Class Tickets to the New Economy presents a fresh, new contribution offering workers hope for a fair shake in the New Economy by replacing free trade with free markets. By wising up to free trade advocates who falsely promote afree tradea as afree enterprise, a voters can force policymakers to view free trade through the same prism as free enterprise, holding it to the same high standards of equal opportunity that characterize American capitalism and which are required by the Constitution. When workers secure equal rights of access with employers to the global labor market they will end once and for all the reason companies go overseas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date introduction to the important and growing field of urban anthropology. This is an increasingly critical area of study, as more than half of the world's population now lives in cities and anthropological research is increasingly done in an urban context. Exploring contemporary anthropological approaches to the urban, the authors consider: How can we define urban anthropology? What are the main themes of twenty-first century urban anthropological research? What are the possible future directions in the field? The chapters cover topics such as urban mobilities, place-making and public space, production and consumption, politics and governance. These are illustrated by lively case studies drawn from a diverse range of urban settings in the global North and South. Accessible yet theoretically incisive, Introducing Urban Anthropology will be a valuable resource for anthropology students as well as of interest to those working in urban studies and related disciplines such as sociology and geography.

Download or read book Latino a Thought written by Francisco H. Vázquez and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latino/a Thought brings together the most important writings that shape Latino consciousness, culture, and activism today. This historical anthology is unique in its presentation of cross cultural writings—especially from Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban writers and political documents—that shape the ideology and experience of U.S. Latinos. Students can read, first hand, the works or authors who most shaped their cultural heritage. They are guided by vivid introductions that set each article or document in its historical context and describe its relevance today. The writings touch on many themes, but are guided by this book's concern for a quest for public citizenship among all Latino populations and a better understanding of racialized populations in the U.S. today.

Book Mongrels Bastards Orphans and Vagabonds

Download or read book Mongrels Bastards Orphans and Vagabonds written by Gregory Rodriguez and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unprecedented account of the long-term cultural and political influences that Mexican-Americans will have on the collective character of our nation. In considering the largest immigrant group in American history, Gregory Rodriguez examines the complexities of its heritage and of the racial and cultural synthesis--mestizaje--that has defined the Mexican people since the Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century. He persuasively argues that the rapidly expanding Mexican American integration into the mainstream is changing not only how Americans think about race but also how we envision our nation. Brilliantly reasoned, highly thought provoking, and as historically sound as it is anecdotally rich, Mongrels, Bastards, Orphans, and Vagabonds is a major contribution to the discussion of the cultural and political future of the United States.

Book The Internationalisation of Higher Education

Download or read book The Internationalisation of Higher Education written by Eva Hartmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are in the middle of a fundamental transformation of the global order which is challenging the supremacy of the USA, and to a certain extent of Europe, in economic and also in normative terms. The financial crisis has further accentuated this shift in the post-Cold War architecture, with emerging economies becoming an engine of globalisation. The chapters in this volume shed light on the role of higher education and its internationalisation in this context, focusing on the different regions of the world. The new role of international organisations like UNESCO is also examined. The empirical findings of these studies are part of a new research agenda in higher education studies, one that goes beyond a ‘higher educationism’ limiting itself to a simple description of institutional changes in this sphere in the light of internationalisation. The different case studies advance an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on accounts from critical and postcolonial theory, international relations and international political economy. This perspective sheds light on the strategic selectivity of the transformation and the struggles related to this major transformation of higher education and its contribution to a new global architecture. This book was originally published as a special issue of Globalisation, Societies and Education.

Download or read book What the Signs Say written by Shonna Trinch and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although we may not think we notice them, storefronts and their signage are meaningful, and the impact they have on people is significant. What the Signs Say argues that the public language of storefronts is a key component to the creation of the place known as Brooklyn, New York. Using a sample of more than two thousand storefronts and over a decade of ethnographic observation and interviews, the study charts two very different types of local Brooklyn retail signage. The unique and consistent features of many words, large lettering, and repetition that make up Old School signage both mark and produce an inclusive and open place. In contrast, the linguistic elements of New School signage, such as brevity and wordplay, signal not only the arrival of gentrification, but also the remaking of Brooklyn as distinctive and exclusive. Shonna Trinch and Edward Snajdr, a sociolinguist and an anthropologist respectively, show how the beliefs and ideas that people take as truths about language and its speakers are deployed in these different sign types. They also present in-depth ethnographic case studies that reveal how gentrification and corporate redevelopment in Brooklyn are intimately connected to public communication, literacy practices, the transformation of motherhood and gender roles, notions of historical preservation, urban planning, and systems of privilege. Far from peripheral or irrelevant, shop signs say loud and clear that language displayed in public always matters.
