Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in English: For Foreigners in Evening Schools The following suggestions based upon experience may be of use to teachers: New Words. - It is intended that the meanings of many of the words used in the text be developed, if nouns, by having before the class the objects named, or if verbs or prepositions, by action or gesture. For instance, the meaning of basin quart, hat, map, and similar words should be developed by reference to these objects before the class; and in reading lessons when a pupil asks, "What is this?" he should hold or touch the object asked about. Such adjectives as full, empty, wide, and long can best be explained in connection with the measures. The teacher can most readily explain such verbs as walk, carry, measure, wash, etc., by performing before the class the actions indicated. The relations in, on, under, near, by, etc., can readily be taught by gesture. Whether a pupil has, or has not, received the correct idea through such development can be easily ascertained in the "action lessons," in which a pupil is told to do, or to touch, or to show, something. At the end of the text will be found a list of words, not readily explained otherwise, translated into German, Polish, Italian, and Yiddish. The importance of accomplishing this aim in the briefest possible time has led me to introduce into the work certain features that have proved most helpful in teaching English to the crowded foreign classes in the evening schools of Greater New York. These features do not exist in the First Readers which, hitherto, have been placed in the hands of foreign pupils, for lack of a book especially designed to meet their needs. Although a First Reader is the right thing in its own field of teaching the art of reading to children whose mother-tongue is English, its gently graded lessons fail to satisfy the foreigner who desires to learn English without unnecessary delay. The English language has peculiarities that those essaying to learn it encounter from the very outset. I have therefore allowed idioms to appear in the earliest lessons, despite the pedagogic rule of leading up to the complex from the simple. Instances of this may be seen in the immediate introduction of the homophone (see, sea), and of the different uses to which the adverb there may be put.
