Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States to the Interstate Commerce Commission for the Year Ending June 30, 1890 According to the First Annual Report, the railway mileage on J nne 30, 1888, was 2 miles. The increase shown by the present te port is not wholly due to new mileage constructedduring the year, but is in part accounted for by the addition to the railway list of 117 private roads, whose mileage was excluded from the list for last year's report. The new mileage thus accounted for is miles, leaving as the length of new line brought into Operation during the year end ing J nne 30, 1889. Included in this mileage reported, the number of bridges is found to be of which are constructed of wood, of stone, of iron, and being a combination of Wood and iron. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Third Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States to the Interstate Commerce Commission for the Year Ending June 30, 1890 It is not wise to draw conclusions without adequate study, but the thought suggested by the above summary is that uniform rules for the control of railways, should those rules proceed beyond general princi pies of universal application, would be of doubtful utility, and it further suggests the necessity of statistical investigation into the economy of railway management and the conditions of railway competition, more comprehensive and more minute than any that has yet been undertaken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Second Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States: For the Year Ended December 31, 1918 Washington, D. June 10, 1920. To the Interstate Commerce Commission: Herewith is submitted the Thirty-second Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States for the year ended December 31, 1918. For this year the compilation of the statistics was complicated by the fact that a large propor tion of the roads were operated by the United States Govern ment. From such roads two annual reports were received, one from the Federal auditor with respect to Federal opera tions, and the other from the corporate auditor with respect to corporate transactions. No attempt has been made to give a combined report of the Federal and corporate income ao counts of each road. In the following summaries the plan has generally been fol lowed, where appropriate, of Showing separate totals for (a) corporate reports of roads under Federal operation; (b) reports of Federal operations; and (c) reports of roads not under Fed eral operation. The number of operating roads which, according to the reports on file, were under Federal operation at some time during the calendar year 1918, is shown in the following table. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Second Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States, for the Year Ending June 30, 1909 The figures shown for 1908 in the foregoing Summary have been slightly changed from those published in the statistical report for that year, in order to make them comparable, in certain respects, with the corresponding returns for 1909. The figures in the column showing increase in Single-track mileage on June 30, 1909, as compared with the corresponding date of the previous year, are significant on account Of the fact that California, Montana, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho Show a decided increase in railway construction during the year covered by this report. These are the States primarily concerned in the ao - called Pacific Rate Cases, which have lately claimed so large a Share of the attention Of the Commission. It will be Observed that quite a number of States Show a decrease rather than an increase in mileage as compared With the previous year. The final figure entered in the summary for each State is the net result of new construction, abandonment, and reclassification, as well as additions to the list of railways. Thus, the Wisconsin Central Railway Company, during the year covered by this report, made a reclassification Of its mileage, which resulted in the transfer of a considerable amount of single-track mileage to yard track and sidings; as a result of new construction and reclassification miles were taken out of the mileage for Wisconsin. During the year, also, the Milwaukee State Line Railway Company was merged in the Chicago Northwestern Railway Company, which partly accounts for a reduction in mileage for the States of Wisconsin and Illinois. In this case the mileage now appears as third and fourth track of the Chicago Northwestern Railway Company. With these exceptions, and a few minor adjustments of the same sort, the decreases in mileage shown indicate actual abandonments of line in the States where such decreases occur. Interstate Commerce Commission and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixth Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States, for the Year Ending June 30, 1893 As in previous reports, the above summary presents two sets of totals for 1893, the first pertaining to the mileage upon which complete reports have been made to this office, the other to the actual mileage of the country. Thus the grand total of single track mileage in this summary is the same as that already given in the previous exhibits. The sig nificant figure for this report, however, is not the physical mileage but the mileage covered by reports and made the basis of computation, that is to say, All computations, except those for the General Balance Sheet, are based upon this figure. The total length of track including first, second, third, fourth track, and yard tracks and sidin gs, on June 30, 1893, was 27 miles. This includes miles of second track, being an increase of miles over the previous year, miles of third track, being an increase of miles over the previous year, miles of fourth track, being an increase of miles over the previous year, and miles of yard track and sidings, being an increase of miles over the previous year. The mileage covered by the report for the present year is miles in excess of the mileage upon which the carriers made report the previous year, although the increase in mileage was only miles. This is largely accounted for by the fact that the Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia, with miles of operating line, renewed its reporting which was suspended the previous year, and the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, with miles, filed a report for the first time. The mileage for which complete reports have been rendered to the Commission during the year ending June 30, 1893, is equal to per cent of the total mileage of the country; and when it is observed that there are 74 lines returned as Not in operation, and 99 lines reported as Private roads, many of which are excused from reporting, and that the mileage of these 173 lines is included in the total mileage of the country, it must be recognized that the present report covers practically all the operating railways which render to the public the service of transportation. This report is the most complete report on railway stati stics which has yet been submitted to the Com mission. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelfth Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States: For the Year Ending June 30, 1899 The aggregate railway mileage on June 80, 1899, 'was miles, showing an increase Of miles as compared with the previous year. This increase is greater than for any year since 1893. The States and Territories which show an increase in mileage in excess of 100 miles are Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Minnesota contributes an increase of miles, being greater than that Of any other State; of this increase miles is due to the new construction of the Eastern Railway of Minnesota. There is nothing in the localization of this increased mileage which bears any peculiar significance, except it be that it is distributed in a fairly uniform manner throughout the country and thus indicates a normal and healthy growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighth Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States for the Year Ending June 30, 1895: Prepared by the Statistician to the CommissionThe aggregate mileage on June 30, 1895, was being an increase during the year covered by the report of It was noted in last year's report that the increase in mileage for the year ending June 30, 1894, was relatively less than for any previous year since the organization of the Commission, the per cent of increase for that year being The per cent of increase for the year ending J 1111c 30, 1895, is but showing a yet further decline in railway con struction. From current indications, however, it may be expected that the year ending June 30, 1896, will Show greater activity in the exten sion of railway facilities.Such increase in railway mileage as has taken place does not seem to have been localized, but, 011 the contrary, to have been fairly well distributed. Arizona leads in railway construction, with a new mile age of miles; Illinois shows an increase of miles; Penn sylvania an increase of 157 miles; Maine an increase of miles; Texas an increase of miles; Montana an increase of miles; these being the only Territory and States which show an increase in railway mileage over 100 miles. Attention has been called in pre vions reports to the steady and continuous extension of railway facil ities in the Southern States; the present report shows this tendency to have been in some degree arrested. The last two columns in the above summary, which Show the number of miles of line per 100 square miles of territory and the number of miles of line per inhabitants, reflect in the comparative totals for the United States the rate of development in railway facilities since 1890. Thus, in the year 1890 there were miles of line for each 100 square miles of territory, which has been increased to miles of line per 100 square miles of territory in 1895. By reference to the corresponding figures for the several States, the great diversity in rail way facilities in different parts of the country is made clear. The assignment of the number of miles of line per inhabitants is not as satisfactory as the foregoing assignment on account of the necessity of estimating the population at a uniform rate of increase; but for the United States as a whole the generalization which the figures warrant may be accepted as trustworthy. The number of miles of line per inhabitants in 1890 was as against miles in 1895. The highest figure was reached in 1893, when the number of miles of line per inhabitants was During the years ending June 30, 1894, and 1895, population is assumed to have increased at a rate relatively more rapid than railway facilities. It would be premature to inquire whether from the social point of view this is a healthful tendency or the reverse, since it may be doubted if the tendency reflects a permanent change in commercial forces. The country must be more evenly provided with railway facilities than is at present the case before railways can be said to have lost their place as pioneers in industrial development.14 report OF the interstate commerce commission.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
