Book Secession in International Law with a Special Reference to the Post Soviet Space

Download or read book Secession in International Law with a Special Reference to the Post Soviet Space written by Júlia Miklasová and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-08-29 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The open access publication of this book has been published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. International law is increasing in relevance to the topic of secession. This book demonstrates that if a secessionist entity’s effectiveness is achieved in violation of peremptory norms, the emergence of statehood is precluded, thereby challenging a classical view of secession as purely factual and meta-legal. Dr. Júlia Miklasová coins the term “illegal secessionist entity,” demonstrates the pervasive effects of the original illegality on the subsequent relations of such entities (purported diplomatic, treaty, economic relations, acts and laws) and outlines the overlapping regimes of the law of occupation, human rights law and duty of non-recognition. Post-Soviet secessionist entities result from an illegal use of force. They are thus prohibited from becoming States, and further consequences of their illegality apply.

Book excerpt: Can the United States be saved from civil war? In 2041, Senator Manny Jones takes charge of a four-state secession battle in America's Southwest to create the Republic of Alta Texas. As he does, the United Nations sends peacekeepers to protect the region's Hispanic majority from genocidal U.S. military retribution for voting to secede. Peacekeeping troops conceal a massive territory grab supported by anti-American terrorists, the world's most powerful drug cartel and nations intent on weakening the United States. U.S. President Marc Phillipi seeks to make amends after a lie he told to win reelection backfires, setting a 72-hour deadline to end a secession quickly turning deadly. Professor Paul Stark and Independent Congresswoman Jill Carlson hold on to each other as they search for solutions others can't see. Two teens maneuver to avoid being trapped in the middle. Just out of high school, the newfound fame of Juan Gonzalez as a leader of Mexican-Americans makes him a primary target for both sides. Camped on the new border with her family, 14-year-old Clarissa Coleman risks her life and endures lost innocence trying to protect America. In Melting Point 2040, America's melting pot reached its boiling point. In Secession 2041, division darkens America's soil with the blood of civil war. Everyday Americans pay with their lives as politically motivated divisions reach an end game. The future builds from a history we are creating today.

  • Author : Reed King
  • Publisher : Flatiron Books
  • Release : 2019-06-18

  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book FKA USA written by Reed King and published by Flatiron Books. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mr. King looks at all our upcoming problems, and imagines a local reaction to each one. The result is often funny, usually sardonic, and always imaginative, what with all the mole rats, flesh drones, dimeheads, and especially ‘The Grifter’s Guide to the Territories FKA USA,’ a notable addition to the line of imaginary authorities.” —The Wall Street Journal Indie Next Pick for July Best of June: io9, AV Club, Amazing Stories, The Verge Reed King’s amazingly audacious novel is something of a cross between L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, Douglas Adams’s A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, and Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One. In Reed King’s wildly imaginative and possibly prescient debut, the United States has dissolved in the wake of environmental disasters and the catastrophic policies of its final president. It is 2085, and Truckee Wallace, a factory worker in Crunchtown 407 (formerly Little Rock, Arkansas, before the secessions), has no grand ambitions besides maybe, possibly, losing his virginity someday. But when Truckee is thrust unexpectedly into the spotlight he is tapped by the President for a sensitive political mission: to deliver a talking goat across the continent. The fate of the world depends upon it. The problem is—Truckee’s not sure it’s worth it. Joined on the road by an android who wants to be human and a former convict lobotomized in Texas, Truckee will navigate an environmentally depleted and lawless continent with devastating—and hilarious—parallels to our own, dodging body pickers and Elvis-worshippers and logo girls, body subbers, and VR addicts. Elvis-willing, he may even lose his virginity. FKA USA is the epic novel we’ve all been waiting for about the American end of times, with its unavoidable sense of being on the wrong end of the roller coaster ride. It is a masterwork of ambition, humor, and satire with the power to make us cry, despair, and laugh out loud all at once. It is a tour de force unlike anything else you will read this year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom in the World, the Freedom House flagship survey whose findings have been published annually since 1972, is the standard-setting comparative assessment of global political rights and civil liberties. The survey ratings and narrative reports on 195 countries and fifteen territories are used by policymakers, the media, international corporations, civic activists, and human rights defenders to monitor trends in democracy and track improvements and setbacks in freedom worldwide. The Freedom in the World political rights and civil liberties ratings are determined through a multi-layered process of research and evaluation by a team of regional analysts and eminent scholars. The analysts used a broad range of sources of information, including foreign and domestic news reports, academic studies, nongovernmental organizations, think tanks, individual professional contacts, and visits to the region, in conducting their research. The methodology of the survey is derived in large measure from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and these standards are applied to all countries and territories, irrespective of geographical location, ethnic or religious composition, or level of economic development.
