Book Irish Sea Mossing in Scituate Mass

Download or read book Irish Sea Mossing in Scituate Mass written by Hawk Hickok Hickman and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes, in a humorous manner, a period of time, 1960 to 1997, and a unique summertime occupation, Irish Sea Mossing, in a small seaside community approximately 30 miles south of Boston Massachusetts, on the Atlantic Ocean. The book describes the author's discovery of this unique job and his total embracing of it for the better part of 25 years. During this story you will meet many of the other young men who shared in the times and activities described in this book. Irish Sea Mossing was brought to the Scituate shores by Irish immigrants during the mid 1800s. Recognizing the same underwater plant that they had used to thicken their Blanc Mange pudding in Ireland, they knew that they could gather it and sell it to food manufacturers for its food binding abilities. Soon a thriving business developed as the local lads went out in their dories and daily gathered the moss during each summer season. Mossing became an integral part of the community as an addition to lobstering, clamming and fishing. The industry continued until 1997, at which time modern technology and foreign markets dictated an end to this wonderful time. Join us in this book as we reminisce and relive our wonderful times. As the final sentence in our book reads, "We will go down to the sea no more. Our day is gone, perhaps never to return. But oh what times we had!

Book French Literature

Download or read book French Literature written by Alison Finch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to offer a cultural history of French literature from its very beginnings, analysing the relationship between French literature and France’s evolving power structures from the Middle Ages through to the present day. It shows the political connections between the elite literature of France and other aspects of its culture, from racism, misogyny, tolerance and liberal reform to song, street performance, advertising and cinema. The nation’s literature contributed to these and was shaped by them. The book highlights the continuities and the unique fault-lines in the society that, over a millennium, has produced ‘French culture’. It looks at France’s early and continuing struggle for a national identity through both its language and its literature, and it shows that this struggle co-exists with openness to other cultures and a bawdy or subtle rebelliousness against the Church and other forms of authority. En route it takes in cuisine, gardens and the French tradition in mathematics. The survey provides an accessible approach to key issues in the history of French culture as well as a wide context for specialists.

Book Virtual Sociocultural Convergence

Download or read book Virtual Sociocultural Convergence written by William Sims Bainbridge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the remarkable sociocultural convergence in multiplayer online games and other virtual worlds, through the unification of computer science, social science, and the humanities. The emergence of online media provides not only new methods for collecting social science data, but also contexts for developing theory and conducting education in the arts as well as technology. Notably, role-playing games and virtual worlds naturally demonstrate many classical concepts about human behaviour, in ways that encourage innovative thinking. The inspiration derives from the internationally shared values developed in a fifteen-year series of conferences on science and technology convergence. The primary methodology is focused on sending avatars, representing classical social theorists or schools of thought, into online gameworlds that harmonize with, or challenge, their fundamental ideas, including technological determinism, urban sociology, group formation, freedom versus control, class stratification, linguistic variation, functional equivalence across cultures, behavioural psychology, civilization collapse, and ethnic pluralism. Researchers and students in the social and behavioural sciences will benefit from the many diverse examples of how both qualitative and quantitative science of culture and society can be performed in online communities of many kinds, even as artists and gamers learn styles and skills they may apply in their own work and play.

Book excerpt: Yan is a compulsive gambler whose wanderlust leads him on a chain of adventures across the South Atlantic and beyond, in the wake of the Falklands War. But this personal voyage takes a heavy toll on his relationships with wife, Kate, and teenage son, Danny, left abandoned in a run-down pub on the northeast coast of England. After 25 years Yan reappears, terminally ill and determined to make amends before his death. Despite Danny's reticence, the two men begin to reconnect through the unlikely medium of birdwatching, as Danny tries to piece together the truth about Yan's desertion and protracted homecoming. Set against the stark industrial landscapes of the Tees estuary and the wilder shores of the South Atlantic, this is an Odyssey for the 21st century, a story about fathers and sons, about isolation and human connection, and ultimately about the healing power of the natural world.

Book Tablet Pen Literary Landscapes from the Modern Middle East Words Without Borders

Download or read book Tablet Pen Literary Landscapes from the Modern Middle East Words Without Borders written by Reza Aslan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Words Without Borders Anthology “Remarkable . . . a triumph . . . connects us at the level of our humanity, no matter where we may be from.”—Los Angeles Times The countries that stretch along the broad horizons of the Middle East—from Morocco to Iran, from Turkey to Pakistan—boast different cultures, different languages, and different religions. Yet the literary landscape of this dynamic part of the world has been bound together not by borders and nationalities, but by a common experience of Western imperialism. Keenly aware of the collected scars left by a legacy of colonial rule, the acclaimed writer Reza Aslan, with a team of four regional editors and seventy-seven translators, cogently demonstrates with Tablet and Pen how literature can, in fact, be used to form identity and serve as an extraordinary chronicle of the disrupted histories of the region. Acting with Words Without Borders, which fosters international exchange through translation and publication of the world’s finest literature, Aslan has purposefully situated this volume in the twentieth century, beyond the familiar confines of the Ottoman past, believing that the writers who have emerged in the last hundred years have not received their full due. This monumental collection, therefore, of nearly two hundred pieces, including short stories, novels, memoirs, essays and works of drama—many of them presented in English for the first time—features translated works from Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Turkish. Organized chronologically, the volume spans a century of literature—from the famed Arab poet Khalil Gibran to the Nobel laureates Naguib Mahfouz and Orhan Pamuk, from the great Syrian-Lebanese poet Adonis to the grand dame of Urdu fiction, Ismat Chughtai—connected by the extraordinarily rich tradition of resplendent cultures that have been all too often ignored by the Western canon. By shifting America’s perception of the Middle Eastern world away from religion and politics, Tablet and Pen evokes the splendors of a region through the voices of its writers and poets, whose literature tells an urgent and liberating story. With a wealth of contextual information that places the writing within the historical, political, and cultural breadth of the region, Tablet & Pen is transcendent, a book to be devoured as a single sustained narrative, from the first page to the last. Creating a vital bridge between two estranged cultures, "this is that rare anthology: cohesive, affecting, and informing" (Publishers Weekly).

Book The Britannias An Archipelago s Tale

Download or read book The Britannias An Archipelago s Tale written by Alice Albinia and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory portrait of Britain through its islands, The Britannias weaves history, myth, and travelogue to rewrite the story of this “island nation.” From Neolithic Orkney, Viking Shetland, and Druidical Anglesey to the joys and strangeness of modern Thanet, The Britannias explores the farthest reaches of Britain’s island topography, once known by the collective term “Britanniae” (the Britains). This expansive journey demonstrates how the smaller islands have wielded disproportionate influence on the mainland, becoming the fertile ground of political, cultural, and technological innovations that shaped history throughout the archipelago. In an act of feminist inquiry, personal adventure, and literary quest, Alice Albinia embarks on a series of journeys that traverse Britain and reach beyond its contemporary borders—from Europe to the Caribbean, Ireland to Scandinavia. She walks the coastlines of Lindisfarne, sails through the Hebrides archipelago, and bikes into Westminster at dawn. As she takes us across extravagantly varied island topographies and surveys centuries of history, Albinia ranges between languages and genres, and through disparate island cultures. She talks to stubbornly independent islanders and searches for archaeological and linguistic traces of island identities, discovering distinct traditions and resistance to mainland control. Trespassing into the past to understand the present, The Britannias uncovers an enduring and subversive mythology of islands ruled by women. Albinia finds female independence woven through Roman colonial reports and Welsh medieval poetry, Restoration utopias and island folk songs. These neglected epics offer fierce feminist countercurrents to mainstream narratives of British identity and shed new light on women’s status in the body politic today. Vivid, perceptive, and disruptive, The Britannias boldly upturns established truths about Britain while revealing its suppressed and forgotten beauty.

Parker soon realizes Monk’s death in front of hundreds of witnesses sparked the civil rebellion that has engulfed him. Parker investigates Monk’s death by examining the cabin and probing the memories of his fellow soldiers. He can almost feel Monk’s presence. That night, Monk’s spirit invades his dreams and fills him with memories not his own. Parker experiences an epiphany which changes him forever. May Eleventh is a memoir about returning from Vietnam during the height of that war, and finding a society as divided and dangerous as the war itself. In between these two stories are memoirs, fables, and fantasies which attempt to reveal the universal truths and powerful magic hidden in our everyday lives.
