Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Jenkins, a renowned Baherian Political Science Professor, suddenly abandons his lucrative teaching job in a reputable America University to play partisan politics in his native country in Africa. Every warning given to him to be careful with village politicians falls on deaf ears in the same way he had ignored the advice of his peers not to swim in the murky and shark infested waters in the first place. His first shock comes with his resounding defeat in a senatorial seat election by a deep pocketed stark illiterate. Thinking that his failure came from a poor choice of party affiliation, he switches party only for things to get messier for him. He soon finds himself between the rock and a hard place as he is caught in a cross fire from Barrister Edgar Morris and Chief Idris Zobas, leaders of the two dominant parties in his country. He becomes an unwilling pun in a chess game as the two men battle for political dominance. He could chicken out of the game if he still had a way of doing so without hurting his political career or displeasing any of the godfathers. Unfortunately, he has reached a point in his political quest where backing out has become as difficult as going forward. Each of the options would come at a tremendous cost. In confused foolhardy bravado, he ventures forward but barely escapes with his life at a point and time he could swear he had excelled -A blistering tale of deception, terror and infamy...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When media coverage of courtroom trials came under intense fire in the aftermath of the infamous New Jersey v. Hauptmann lawsuit (a.k.a. the Lindbergh kidnapping case,) a new wave of fictionalized courtroom programming arose to satiate the public's appetite for legal drama. This book is an alphabetical examination of the nearly 200 shows telecast in the U.S. from 1948 through 2008 involving courtrooms, lawyers and judges, complete with cast and production credits, airdates, detailed synopses and background information. Included are such familiar titles as Perry Mason, Divorce Court, Judge Judy, LA Law, and The Practice, along with such obscure series as They Stand Accused, The Verdict Is Yours Sam Benedict, Trials of O'Brien, and The Law and Mr. Jones. The book includes an introductory overview of law-oriented radio and TV broadcasts from the 1920s to the present, including actual courtroom coverage (or lack of same during those years in which cameras and microphones were forbidden in the courtroom) and historical events within TV's factual and fictional treatment of the legal system. Also included in the introduction is an analysis of the rise and fall of cable's Court TV channel.

Download or read book Undoing Impunity written by Va Kītā and published by Zubaan Sexual Violence and Imp. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acts of sexual violence are also acts committed with impunity. Those who commit them do not consider their actions consequential, and this is as true of perpetrators in the social realm, as it is of state actors. Such impunity is sustained by what it refuses: shared humanity and the recognition of suffering. Yet throughout history impunity to do with sexual violence has been challenged by fearless, just and compassionate speech, in courts of justice and outside of it. Those who did do, and continue to do so, not only advance a politics of accountability but also an ethics of recognition, of suffering and hurt. This book explores the contours of such politics and ethics in the modern South Asian context. It takes a historical lens to our collective struggles with sexual violence and the question of impunity, and builds an archive of speech, partial silence and of the unspeakable, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. It examines closely explicitly feminist responses from the region: drawing from the latter, it suggests that sexual violence and the impunity it claims for itself are best understood in the manner they relate to the sexual everyday in our cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive account of one of the twentieth century’s most brutal, yet least examined, episodes of genocide and detention The Killing Season explores one of the largest and swiftest, yet least examined, instances of mass killing and incarceration in the twentieth century—the shocking antileftist purge that gripped Indonesia in 1965–66, leaving some five hundred thousand people dead and more than a million others in detention. An expert in modern Indonesian history, genocide, and human rights, Geoffrey Robinson sets out to account for this violence and to end the troubling silence surrounding it. In doing so, he sheds new light on broad, enduring historical questions. How do we account for instances of systematic mass killing and detention? Why are some of these crimes remembered and punished, while others are forgotten? Based on a rich body of primary and secondary sources, The Killing Season is the definitive account of a pivotal period in Indonesian history.
