They address both the research challenges and the unique preservation capacity of the state’s many underwater sites, suggesting solutions for analyzing corroded lithic artifacts and submerged midden deposits. Looking towards future research, archaeologists discuss strategies for finding additional pre-Clovis and Clovis-era sites offshore on the southeastern continental shelf. The search is important, these essays show, because Florida’s prehistoric sites hold critical data for the debate over the nature and timing of the first human colonization of the Western Hemisphere.

Seeking the American Tropics tells the stories of the explorers and adventurers who—for better and for worse—helped open the unique environment of South Florida to the world. Beginning with the arrival of Juan Ponce de León in 1513, James Kushlan describes how most of the famous Spanish explorers never made it to South Florida, leaving the area’s rich natural history out of scientific records for the next 250 years. It wasn’t until the British colonial and early American periods that the first surveyors were commissioned and the first naturalists—Titian Peale and John James Audubon—arrived to collect, draw, and report the subtropical flora and fauna that were so unique to North America. Moving into the railroad era, Kushlan illuminates the activities of scientists such as Henry Nehrling and Charles Torrey Simpson alongside the dabbling of wealthy amateur naturalists. Book excerpt: Facing Florida is the third volume of a series sponsored by the Academy of American Franciscan History and Flagler College exploring the Franciscan legacy in the Spanish Borderlands. This volume focuses specifically on early modern southeastern America. The volume's multidisciplinary approach, Dr. Kathleen Deagan notes in the introduction, provides us "with new multivalent scholarship that often challenges prevailing assumptions about motives, social relations and power structures in the mission systems." Despite the diversity of topics in the volume, several thematic threads run through the essays. One is a concern with locating belief, motive and intention in past actors. Eliciting thought and belief in the past is a notoriously murky undertaking, but one that is directly relevant to understanding the legacy of the Franciscan project in America. Another thread in the volume is a concern with language and meaning, particularly in the ways language has conditioned how we understand the past from written and iconographic sources. A third is "exemplars," with a meaning similar to that used by Franciscan friars in conversion. Many of the essays in the volume incorporate historical anecdote, but some of the contributors highlight the ways that foregrounding a particular individual or event can bring important but underrepresented issues into sharper focus. The result is an important new collection that explores innovative avenues in the study of southeastern American Indian culture and religion prior to the 1900s.

This remarkable road ran from the Florida border at the St. Mary's river south to what would become the settlement of New Smyrna. It was intended to bring settlers into then almost unpopulated Florida. From 1774 it became the main route into Florida. It existed right up into the 20th century. Here were the battles, the famous men, refugees, the rich plantation economy, a huge slave revolt, and one of our country's worst wars, one that lasted seven years. Florida's Old King's road was important in its rich early history. The early highway has vanished, its stories untold, it is blocked by new construction often now existing in name only. This is William (Bill) Ryan's search for the history of this old highway and some it's stories. They resulted in four other books that tell of events along Old Kings, once called “An American Engineering Treasure.” Some small pieces of the original roadway still exist. They are vanishing unmarked into the Florida brush. By connection of the dots he found on old maps and early accounts a story evolves of this early American roadway along which much of Florida's history occurred. Author William P. (Bill) Ryan is a director of the Flagler County Historical Society. He retired to Florida from a career in high technology photographic equipment, was internet webmaster for Flagler County Public Library's Florida memories group, and is a frequent speaker to Florida history groups. His first person writing style brings history alive. Book excerpt: The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures. This prohibition applies to searches conducted by public school officials. However, given the unique nature of the public school environment, and the need to balance a student’s protected expectation of privacy against the school’s need to maintain a suitable environment for education, courts have eased the restrictions to which searches by public authorities are ordinarily subject. For instance, school officials need not obtain a warrant before searching a student who is under their authority. Additionally, rather than requiring probable cause, the legality of a search of a student depends simply on the reasonableness, under all the circumstances, of the search. Florida courts have consistently held that a search of a student requires a school official to have reasonable grounds or reasonable suspicion to suspect that the search will result in evidence that the student has violated the law or school rules.
