Book Search for Heavy Long lived Particles that Decay to Photons in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Heavy Long lived Particles that Decay to Photons in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents the results of the first search for heavy, neutral, longlived particles that decay to photons at a hadron collider. We use a sample of +jet+missing transverse energy events in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Candidate events are selected based on the arrival time of a high-energy photon at the electromagnetic calorimeter as measured with a timing system that was recently installed. The final result is that we find 2 events, using 570±34 pb-1 of data collected during 2004-2005 at the Fermilab Tevatron, consistent with the background estimate of 1.3±0.7 events. While our search strategy does not rely on model-specific dynamics, we interpret this result in terms of cross section limits in a supersymmetric model with $\vec{X}$$0\atop{1}$ eG and set a world-best e 01 mass reach of 101 GeV/c2 at e = 5 ns. We can exclude any [gamma]+jet+missing transverse energy signal that would produce more than 5.5 events.

Book Search for Resonant Pair Production of Long lived Particles Decaying to B Anti b in P Anti p Collisions at S

Download or read book Search for Resonant Pair Production of Long lived Particles Decaying to B Anti b in P Anti p Collisions at S written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on a first search for production of Higgs bosons decaying into neutral long-lived particles (NLLP) which each decay to a b{bar b} pair, using 3.6 fb−1 of data recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We search for pairs of displaced vertices in the tracking detector at radii in the range 1.6-20 cm from the beam axis. No significant excess is observed above background, and upper limits are set on the production rate in a hidden-valley benchmark model for a range of Higgs boson masses and NLLP masses and lifetimes.

Book Search for a Neutral Long Lived Particle Decaying to B Jets

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of the Higgs boson is required by the Standard Model of particle physics, yet it has not been observed. The precise nature of the Higgs boson is unknown and the mechanism by which it interacts with known Standard Model particles is also not known. Long-lived, electrically neutral hadrons have recently been proposed in hidden-valley models and could constitute a pathway through which the Higgs boson communicates with the Standard Model. Such a scenario may provide a novel path to Higgs discovery at the Tevatron. This thesis describes a search for a neutral, long-lived particle produced in decays of Higgs bosons in p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of (square root)s = 1.96 TeV, which decays to b-jets and lives long enough to travel at least 1.6 cm before decaying. This analysis uses 3.65 fb−1 of data recorded with the Run II D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider from April 2002 to August of 2008. We perform a search for eight possible hidden-valley scenarios resulting from a Higgs decay. No significant excess over background is observed and cross-section limits are placed at 95% CL.

Topics include supersymmetry, extra gauge bosons, Randall-Sundrum gravitons, excited electrons and neutral, long-lived particles.

Book Search For New Elementary Particles The Status And Prospect Proceedings Of The Trieste Workshop

Download or read book Search For New Elementary Particles The Status And Prospect Proceedings Of The Trieste Workshop written by Martin Lewis Perl and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-06-14 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been more than a decade since new elementary particles were discovered. To recognize the findings of scientists in this still fairly new but exciting and promising area of research, the Trieste Workshop was organised in May 1992 to discuss the status and explore the prospects for the discovery of new elementary particles using the full variety of search methods which are, or will be available to the physicist. All papers in this collection of proceedings are reviews written by experts in their own area of speciality. Many review papers based on experimental findings are also included. To present a clearer and more coherent overview, a theoretical overview talk as well as a summary talk have been included to serve as a link between the various areas that were discussed in the papers. This collection of papers is perhaps the first authoritative source ever published on the search for new elementary particles.

Book Challenging the Standard Model at the Tevatron Collider

Download or read book Challenging the Standard Model at the Tevatron Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even at a time where the world's eyes are focused on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which has reached the energy frontier in 2010, many important results are still being obtained from data analyses performed at the Tevatron collider at Fermilab. This contribution discusses recent highlights in the areas of B hadron, electroweak, top quark, and Higgs boson physics. The standard model (SM) of particle physics forms the cornerstone of our understanding of elementary particles and their interactions, and many of its aspects have been investigated in great detail. Yet it is generally suspected to be incomplete (e.g. by not allowing for the incorporation of gravity in a field theoretical setting) and un-natural (e.g. the mass of the Higgs boson is not well protected against radiative corrections). In addition, it does not explain the dark matter and dark energy content of the Universe. It is therefore of eminent importance to test the limits of validity of the SM. In the decade since its upgrade to a centre-of-mass energy √s = 1.96 TeV, the Tevatron p{bar p} collider has delivered an integrated luminosity of about 10 fb−1, up to 9 fb−1 of which are available for analysis by its CDF and D0 collaborations. These large datasets allow for stringent tests of the SM in two areas: direct searches for particles or final states that are not very heavy but that suffer from small production cross sections (e.g. the Higgs boson), and searches for indirect manifestations of beyond-the-standard-model (BSM) effects through virtual effects. The latter searches can often be carried out by precise measurements of otherwise known processes. This contribution describes such tests of the SM carried out by the CDF and D0 collaborations. In particular, recent highlights in the areas of B hadron physics, electroweak physics, top quark physics, and Higgs boson physics are discussed. Recent results of tests of QCD and of direct searches for new phenomena are described in another contribution.

Book Search for Stopped Long lived Particles Produced in Pp Collisions at 8 TeV at CMS

Download or read book Search for Stopped Long lived Particles Produced in Pp Collisions at 8 TeV at CMS written by Marissa L. Rodenburg and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Large Hadron Collider counter-rotating proton beams are collided at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is used to measure the energies and charges of the resulting cascade of particles produced in these collisions. This search focuses on the observation of massive, long-lived particles, such as the gluino, that would suggest new physics beyond the Standard Model. A custom trigger is used to probe time periods during which no proton collisions occur, thereby eliminating most backgrounds to the signal. The remaining backgrounds resulting from cosmic rays, beam-related effects, and instrumental noise, are further reduced using a series of sophisticated selection cuts. Candidate events passing all selection cuts are analyzed using a counting experiment and limits are placed on the cross sections and masses of the gluino and the supersymmetric top quark.

Book Search for New Particles in Multijet Final States at the Tevatron

Download or read book Search for New Particles in Multijet Final States at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the latest results of the searches for new particles in hadronic final states performed in p{anti p} collisions at (square root)s=1.8 TeV. The large data samples collected with the CDF and D0 detectors at the Tevatron collider between 1992 and 1995 allow searches for low cross section phenomena in dijet and multijet events, despite the hindrance of the high background from normal QCD processes. However no signal for new physics is found, and the data show good agreement with QCD. Limits on the mass and on the cross section of the searched states can thus be set.

Book Search for Charged Massive Long Lived Particles Using the D0 Detector

Download or read book Search for Charged Massive Long Lived Particles Using the D0 Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for charged massive stable particles has been performed with the D0 detector using 1.1 fb−1 of data. The speed of the particle has been calculated based on the time-of-flight and position information in the muon system. The present research is limited to direct pair-production of the charged massive long-lived particles. We do not consider CMSPs that result from the cascade decays of heavier particles. In this analysis, the exact values of the model parameters of the entire supersymmetric particle mass spectrum, relevant for cascade decays, are not important. We found no evidence of the signal. 95% CL cross-section upper limits have been set on the pair-productions of the stable scaler tau lepton, the gaugino-like charginos, and the higgsino-like charginos. The upper cross section limits vary from 0.31 pb to 0.04 pb, for stau masses in the range between 60 GeV and 300 GeV. We use the nominal value of the theoretical cross section to set limits on the mass of the pair produced charginos. We exclude the pair-produced stable gaugino-like charginos with mass below 206 GeV, and higgsino-like charginos below 171 GeV, respectively. Although the present sensitivity is insufficient to test the model of the pair produced stable staus, we do set cross section limits which can be applied to the pair production of any charged massive stable particle candidates with similar kinematics. These are the most restrictive limits to the present on the cross sections for CMSPs and the first published from the Tevatron Collider Run II. The manuscript has been published by Physical Review Letters in April 2009 and is available at arXiv as.
