Download or read book Searches for Higgs Boson Pair Production in the Hh u2192 bb WW bb Bbbb Channels with the ATLAS Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searches for both resonant and nonresonant Higgs boson pair production are performed in the hh → bb??, ??WW* final states using 20.3 fb-1 of pp collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No evidence of their production is observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits on the production cross sections are set. These results are then combined with the published results of the hh → ??bb, bbbb analyses. An upper limit of 0.69 (0.47) pb on the nonresonant hh production is observed (expected), corresponding to 70 (48) times the SM gg → hh cross section. For production via narrow resonances, cross-section limits of hh production from a heavy Higgs boson decay are set as a function of the heavy Higgs boson mass. The observed (expected) limits range from 2.1 (1.1) pb at 260 GeV to 0.011 (0.018) pb at 1000 GeV. In addition, these results are interpreted in the context of two simplified scenarios of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis described in this thesis is the search for the Higgs boson, decaying into bb pair, in the associated production with a vector boson, in the extreme Higgs boson transverse momentum region where the Higgs boson is reconstructed using the large-R jet technique. The use of the large-R jets allows to add a part of the phase space unexplored so far, which is particularly sensitive to possible new physics. The analysed data have been collected at LHC by the ATLAS detector between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV. The same dataset has been used to perform the differential pp → ZH and pp → WH cross-section measurements used to extract the information on the Higgs couplings and to put limits on Beyond the Standard Model effects. Furthermore the analysis has been re-used to perform a cross-section measurement of the diboson ZZ and WZ processes because the diboson and the Higgs processes have a similar topology. For the first time the ZZ(bb) and WZ(bb) cross-sections are measured at √s = 13 TeV and the observed cross-section measurements are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.

Book Search for the Higgs Boson in the Vector Boson Fusion Channel at the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Search for the Higgs Boson in the Vector Boson Fusion Channel at the ATLAS Detector written by Eric Ouellette and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Thesis describes the first measurement of, and constraints on, Higgs boson production in the vector boson fusion mode, where the Higgs decays to b quarks (the most common decay channel), at the LHC. The vector boson fusion mode, in which the Higgs is produced simultaneously with a pair of quark jets, provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the detailed properties of the Higgs, including the possibility of parity and CP violation, as well as its couplings and mass. It thus opens up this new field of study for precision investigation as the LHC increases in energy and intensity, leading the way to this new and exciting arena of precision Higgs research.

Book Searches for Pair Production of Higgs Bosons in the Bbbb Final State Using the ATLAS Detector Or

Download or read book Searches for Pair Production of Higgs Bosons in the Bbbb Final State Using the ATLAS Detector Or written by Sean Gasiorowski and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses searches for pair production of Higgs bosons in the bbbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector from $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton ($pp$) collisions during the full period of LHC Run 2. It develops two separate analysis strategies: one targeting resonant pair production of Higgs bosons, in which Beyond the Standard Model resonances are produced which subsequently decay to two Higgs bosons, and one targeting non-resonant pair production of Higgs bosons, which is sensitive to Standard Model $HH$ production as well as to variations of the Higgs trilinear self-coupling. In the resonant searches, no significant excesses are seen, and upper limits on cross section are set on both spin-0 and spin-2 resonant hypotheses. Such limits are competitive with other leading ATLAS full Run 2 searches, and represent a significantly stronger statement than previous, beating the early Run 2 combined ATLAS results above 350 GeV and leading the ATLAS full Run 2 sensitivity above 700 GeV. In the non-resonant, no evidence of Standard Model $HH$ production is seen, but upper limits on cross section of $pp\rightarrow HH$ via gluon-gluon fusion are set to be 4.4 (5.9) observed (expected) times the value predicted by the Standard Model. Such limits represent a significant improvement in sensitivity over the early Run 2 bbbbresults, achieving a 30 (40)~\% additional gain in sensitivity beyond that predicted from a pure increase in dataset size. These limits are competitive with other leading ATLAS full Run 2 searches. Cross section limits are additionally set for a range of values of the Higgs self coupling, parametrized via its ratio to the value predicted by the Standard Model, $\kappa_{\lambda} = \lambda_{HHH}/\lambda_{HHH}^{SM}$. This is restricted to have values $-4.9 \leq \kappa_{\lambda} \leq 14.4$ observed ($-3.9 \leq \kappa_{\lambda} \leq 10.9$ expected). An excess of data over background is seen for values of $\kappa_{\lambda} \geq 5$, with maximum local significance of $3.8\sigma$ at $\kappa_{\lambda} = 6$. Such an excess is demonstrated to be due to low mass, where the bbbb channel has limited sensitivity, and is not seen in more sensitive channels in this region. Results on the development of two methods for the improvement of hadronic shower modeling in ATLAS fast calorimeter simulation are also presented.

Book Search for Resonant Pair Production of Higgs Bosons in the Bb bb Final State Using Pp Collisions at S

Download or read book Search for Resonant Pair Production of Higgs Bosons in the Bb bb Final State Using Pp Collisions at S written by [Study Group] ATLAS Collaboration CERN and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A search for resonant Higgs boson pair production in the b ̄bb ̄b final state is presented. The analysis uses 126 fb−1-139 fb−1 of pp collision data at √s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is divided into two channels, targeting Higgs boson decays which are reconstructed as pairs of small-radius jets or as individual large-radius jets. Spin-0 and spin-2 benchmark signal models are considered, both of which correspond to resonant HH production via gluon-gluon fusion. The data are consistent with Standard Model predictions. Upper limits are set on the production cross section times branching ratio to Higgs boson pairs of a new resonance in the mass range from 251 GeV to 5 TeV

Book Higgs Boson Production with a Top Quark Pair in the Diphoton Channel Double Higgs Production in the Bb diphoton Channel and Inner Tracker Upgrade with the Atlas Detector at the Large Hadron Collider

Download or read book Higgs Boson Production with a Top Quark Pair in the Diphoton Channel Double Higgs Production in the Bb diphoton Channel and Inner Tracker Upgrade with the Atlas Detector at the Large Hadron Collider written by Alex Zeng Wang and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, the diphoton ([gamma][gamma]) decay channel of the Higgs boson has been one of the most potent channels due to the contrast between the smoothly falling background and sharply peaked signal in the diphoton invariant mass. In 2018, with up to 80 fb-1 of data at [square root]s = 13 TeV, ATLAS observed Higgs boson production in association with a pair of top quarks (ttH) with a significance of 5.8 [sigma] by combining measurements in the [gamma][gamma], bb, ZZ, and multi-lepton Higgs decay channels. The ttH production cross-section was measured to be 670 [plus or minus] 90 (stat) +110 -100 (syst) fb. The diphoton channel was one of the main contributors to this result, alone providing a significance of 4.1 [sigma]. With 140 fb-1, a search for non-resonant Higgs pair production in the bb[gamma][gamma] final state was performed. No significant signal was observed and upper limits at 95% confidence level were set. The observed limit on the SM cross-section was 130 fb, or 4.2 times the predicted value. The observed Higgs trilinear coupling modifier was constrained to be between [-1.5, 6.7]. Both the ttH (H [rightwards arrow] [gamma][gamma]) and HH bb[gamma][gamma] analyses will benefit tremendously from the increased statistics expected from the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). To ensure the continued efficiency of the detector in the harsh HL-LHC environment, ATLAS will install a new Inner Tracker (ITk) consisting of silicon pixel sensors in its innermost layer. At SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a variety of electrical tests are performed for the construction of a prototype integrated pixel system, in order to provide early feedback and validation of the ITk design.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2012, CERN announced the discovery of the Higgs boson, the last missing piece of the Standard Model (SM). The Higgs boson was observed in different channels. Precise measurement of its properties is now very important to investigate for possible deviations from the SM. This thesis presents a search for the Higgs boson produced in association with top quarks and decaying to a b quark pair, the ttH(H→bb) channel, using proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. This document details in particular the full reconstruction of the ttH(H→bb) system and the discrimination between signal and the main background, tt+jets. The ttbb is a subset of the tt+jets backgrounds recent studies show that there is a large fraction of ttbb events with jets containing two b-hadrons. A new algorithm has been developed to discriminate such jets from single b-hadrons jets. The description of this tool is presented in this thesis.

Book Discovery and Measurement of the Higgs Boson in the WW Decay Channel

Download or read book Discovery and Measurement of the Higgs Boson in the WW Decay Channel written by David Hall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the stand-alone discovery and measurement of the Higgs boson in its decays to two W bosons using the Run-I ATLAS dataset. This is the most precise measurement of gluon-fusion Higgs boson production and is among the most significant results attained at the LHC. The thesis provides an exceptionally clear exposition on a complicated analysis performed by a large team of researchers. Aspects of the analysis performed by the author are explained in detail; these include new methods for evaluating uncertainties on the jet binning used in the analysis and for estimating the background due to associated production of a W boson and an off-shell photon. The thesis also describes a measurement of the WW cross section, an essential background to Higgs boson production. The primary motivation of the LHC was to prove or disprove the existence of the Higgs boson. In 2012, CERN announced this discovery and the resultant ATLAS publication contained three decay channels: gg, ZZ, and WW.

Book Evidence for the Production of the Standard Model Higgs Boson Produced Via Vector Boson Fusion in the WW Channel at the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Evidence for the Production of the Standard Model Higgs Boson Produced Via Vector Boson Fusion in the WW Channel at the ATLAS Detector written by Koos van Nieuwkoop and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider announced they had each observed a new particle with a mass of about 125 GeV/c^2. Given the available data, the properties of this particle are consistent with the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics (SM). The Higgs boson, as proposed within the SM, is the simplest manifestation of the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism. This discovery was driven by the gluon fusion (ggF) production mode, the dominant Higgs boson production mechanism at the LHC. The SM also predicts that the Higgs boson can be produced by the fusion of two weak vector bosons (VBF). Measuring VBF Higgs boson production is an important test of the SM but it is challenging to measure given its cross section is an order of magnitude smaller than that of ggF. After H->bb, H->WW* is the dominant decay channel for the SM Higgs boson at 125 GeV/c^2 and is therefore a promising channel to measure its properties. In addition, the VBF H->WW* search channel makes it possible to probe the exclusive coupling of the Higgs boson to the weak vector bosons. Precise measurements of these coupling strengths make it possible to constrain new models of physics beyond the SM. Despite its relatively large branching ratio, H->WW*->lnln is a challenging channel to search for the Higgs boson because of the neutrinos in the final state which are not directly detectable by the ATLAS detector. Consequently, it is not possible to fully reconstruct the mass of the WW system. Furthermore, there are several backgrounds that have the same signature in the detector as the signal. Top quark pair production is the largest background in this analysis. A multivariate analysis technique, based on an eight-variable boosted decision tree (BDT), is used to search for VBF H->WW*->lnln in the Run-I data and a subset of the Run-II data. This analysis provides the first evidence for VBF H->WW*->lnln with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations in Run-I and 1.9 standard deviations in Run-II. The measured signal strength relative to the rate predicted by the SM for VBF H->WW*->lnln is 1.3 +/- 0.5 using the Run-I data, and 1.7 +1.1/-0.9 using a fraction of the Run-II data.

Book Searches for Associated Higgs Boson Production with Top Quark Pair and Higgs Pair Production in Multi Lepton Final States with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Searches for Associated Higgs Boson Production with Top Quark Pair and Higgs Pair Production in Multi Lepton Final States with the ATLAS Detector written by Merve Nazlim Agaras and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the Higgs boson at a mass around 125 GeV by both ATLAS and CMS collaborations in July 2012, it became crucial to measure its properties, such as its couplings to other particles, and search for any deviations from the Standard Model (SM) predictions. The top quark Yukawa coupling is close to unity and the strongest in the fermionic sector. Therefore, this coupling plays a crucial role in the theory. Determination of the associated production of The Higgs boson production with a pair of top quarks (ttH) offers a tree-level access to measuring this coupling. The analysis of ttH production at ATLAS experiment exploits several Higgs decay channel, together with different top quark decay modes. In this thesis, the study of the ttH (H → Multi lepton) process is presented in the topology where the Higgs decays to WW,ZZ or tautau, using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79.8fb^-1 at √s = 13 TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector between 2015-2017. Improved knowledge on the background modelling and the complex fit model is used with many degrees of freedoms. Particularly different fit setups are presented in order to understand the modelling of the major irreducible background, ttW. Furthermore, a search for the SM Higgs boson pair production in the multi lepton final states is presented. The search uses 139fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV provided by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 and 2018. The first studies in two lepton same-sign channel is performed for lepton working point optimisation and estimation of background contributions. Template fit method is applied to estimated the reducible backgrounds and preliminary expected upper limit is calculated.
