Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In between the covers of An Uncharted Journey Into the Abyss, are eighteen short stories that don’t always end up with fairy tale endings. From an Indian tribe on the brink of slaughter, to a hard nosed veteran policeman tracking a serial killer, we find ourselves drawn deep within the psyche of the main characters. Can a poor young Mexican boy save his family and farm from a vicious predator eating their livestock? Will a cocky self-assured man from back East have his ego shattered by a native American cashier in the West? Or will you be soaring above the crashing seas as a ptarmigan looking for an escape? An Uncharted Journey Into the Abyss will walk you along high mountain trails with a curmudgeonly old prospector, haunt a family as a Civil War ghost, and even visit a planet on a search and reconnaissance mission. And within each story, embedded deep within each of them, is a kernel of truth. Whether you, as the reader, decide to decipher its meaning is completely up to you.

Book Explorations in Truth the Human Condition and Wholeness

Download or read book Explorations in Truth the Human Condition and Wholeness written by Will Barno and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work Explorations in Truth, the Human Condition and Wholeness is an unconventional gaze into the landscape of our complex inner life, exploring inner experiences and testifying to the truth of life’s sordid beauty and sacred dread. What does it mean to live an authentic life without illusion and accept the complexities of life and death? This book has woven together personnel experiences, existential philosophy, quantum physics, Jungian psychology, and contemplative spirituality into a tapestry of reflections which covers the entire spectrum of the human condition and our collective quest for truth and wholeness. Included is a brief look into history in a delineation of fate, destiny, and our longings for joy and wholeness in the context of uncertainty and finitude. The author uses modern day bards, primarily Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, and Bruce Cockburn, as epigraphs to enhance his philosophy of life that is both distinctive and drastic in nature. Also included are extensive commentaries on “The Odyssey” and the “Book of Job”, peering into suffering and evil in a fashion that combines the great Western Greek and Judeo-Christian traditions. Finally, the power of the feminine is placed firmly back into the psyche of the West which had been neglected for too long. In short, join me in a great adventurous approach to healing and wholeness amidst the afflictions and anguish of our human condition. Will Barno [email protected] 612-390-0514

Book How to Destroy Western Civilization and Other Topics

Download or read book How to Destroy Western Civilization and Other Topics written by Peter Kreeft, Ph.D. and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Kreeft presents a series of brilliant essays about many of the problems that undermine our Western civilization, along with ways to address them. "These essays are not new proposals or solutions to today's problems," he says. "They are old. They have been tried, and have worked. They have made people happy and good. That is what makes them so radical and so unusual today." In his witty, readable style, Kreeft implores us to gather wisdom and preserve it, as the monks did in the Middle Ages. He offers relevant philosophical precepts, divided into various categories, that can be collected and remembered in order to guide us and future generations in the days ahead. Kreeft emphasizes that the most necessary thing to save our civilization is to have children. If we don't have children, our civilization will cease to exist. The "unmentionable elephant in the room", he tells us, is sex, properly understood. Religious liberty is being attacked in the name of "sexual liberty", in other words, abortion. Kreeft encourages us to fight back—with joy and confidence—with the one weapon that will win the future: children.

  • Author : David W. Bates
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press

Download or read book Enlightenment Aberrations written by David W. Bates and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Enlightenment Aberrations, David W. Bates shows that error was a complex, important, and by no means entirely negative concept in Enlightenment thought, one that had a decisive influence in revolutionary debates on political identity and national history. What can it mean to write a history of error? In Bates's view all philosophy, insofar as its project is the search for truth, begins in error. If truth is posited as a goal to be attained, not as a given of some kind, then error assumes a central role in the quest for truth. Going beyond both liberal celebrations and postmodern critiques of Enlightenment reason, Bates reveals just how crucial the problematic relation between human "wandering" and the mystery of truth was in eighteenth-century thought. The author draws on a wide range of Enlightenment thinkers, including Etienne Bonnot de Condillac, Jean d'Alembert, Marie-Jean-Antoine-Nicolas Caritat, Marquis de Condorcet, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Charles Bonnet, showing how they wrestled with the "risk and promise" of error. He then demonstrates how the concept of error and its dialectical relationship to truth played out in the political culture of the French Revolution, particularly in the Terror. In the final chapters, Bates looks at the post-revolutionary transformations of the Enlightenment discourse of error and its subsequent history in modern European thought.

The narrative unfolds to reveal a story of horrific events that must be hidden, yet can no longer be kept secret. It sheds light on how chronic long-term traumatisation within a closed family circle can create madness in a vulnerable and lonely child, and helps reader gain an understanding of the enigmatic phenomena of Dissociated Identity Disorder. Having been terrorized into silence, destroying her ability to use language in a house of secrets and lies, the therapy reveals how this patient struggles to come out of her autistic-like state in search of ways to find her past, her ‘self’ and her voice. In this struggle, the reader becomes an audience exposed to the birth of dissociative personae who come forth to tell her story. As language slowly unfolds, she begins to share a first-hand account, albeit in written form, of the most complex psychological forces involved in a victim of incest who simultaneously loves, hates and is terrorized by her lover-father. Through live vignettes it demonstrates how external violence can create inner violence that threatens to annihilate the soul, leaving only a body to survive. The book provides an original contribution to our understanding of the complex psychological forces involved in incest, featuring the patient’s own, coherent written texts, mediated by her therapist. The former’s remarkable insights represent essential reading for all readers involved in policy development for the protection of children at high risk of suffering abuse.

Book A Stranger s Journey

Download or read book A Stranger s Journey written by David Mura and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long recognized as a master teacher at writing programs like VONA, the Loft, and the Stonecoast MFA, with A Stranger's Journey, David Mura has written a book on creative writing that addresses our increasingly diverse American literature. Mura argues for a more inclusive and expansive definition of craft, particularly in relationship to race, even as he elucidates timeless rules of narrative construction in fiction and memoir. His essays offer technique-focused readings of writers such as James Baldwin, ZZ Packer, Maxine Hong Kingston, Mary Karr, and Garrett Hongo, while making compelling connections to Mura's own life and work as a Japanese American writer. In A Stranger's Journey, Mura poses two central questions. The first involves identity: How is writing an exploration of who one is and one's place in the world? Mura examines how the myriad identities in our changing contemporary canon have led to new challenges regarding both craft and pedagogy. Here, like Toni Morrison's Playing in the Dark or Jeff Chang's Who We Be, A Stranger's Journey breaks new ground in our understanding of the relationship between the issues of race, literature, and culture. The book's second central question involves structure: How does one tell a story? Mura provides clear, insightful narrative tools that any writer may use, taking in techniques from fiction, screenplays, playwriting, and myth. Through this process, Mura candidly explores the newly evolved aesthetic principles of memoir and how questions of identity occupy a central place in contemporary memoir.
