Book excerpt: The KTeV E799 experiment has conducted a search for the rare decay K{sub L} 2![pi]°°[gamma] via the topology K{sub L} 2![pi]°[pi]°{sub D}[gamma] (where [pi]°{sub D} 2![gamma]ee−). Due to Bose statistics of the [pi]° pair and the real nature of the photon, the K{sub L} 2![pi]°[pi]°[gamma] decay is restricted to proceed at lowest order by the CP conserving direct emission (DE) of an E2 electric quadrupole photon. The rate of this decay is interesting theoretically since chiral perturbation theory predicts that this process vanishes at level O(p4). Therefore, this mode probes chiral perturbation theory at O(p6). In this paper we report a determination of an upper limit of 2.43 x 10−7 (90% CL) for K{sub L} 2![pi]°[pi]°[gamma]. This is approximately a factor of 20 lower than previous results.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes a search for the rare decay K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma} using data from the KTeV experiment, using the topology K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sub D}{sup 0}{gamma} (where {pi}{sub D}{sup 0} {yields} {gamma}e{sup +}e{sup -}). Due to Bose statistics and the real nature of the photon, the K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma} decay can proceed at lowest order only by the Cp conserving direct emission of an E2 photon. The decay vanishes to O(p{sup 4}) in chiral perturbation theory and is a probe of the theory to the sixth order. The primary background to this decay consists of K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sub D}{sup 0} events with one lost photon. The upper limit for the decay K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma} presented in this thesis is 2.32 x 10{sup -7} at the 90% confidence level. This upper limit was derived from both 1997 and 1999 data, using a blind analysis. The upper limit was derived from a Feldman-Cousins method, based on a weighted total of 0.53 data events in the signal region with an expected K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sub D}{sup 0} background of 0.37 {+-} 0.28 events. The previous upper limit for this decay was 5.6 x 10{sup -6} at the 90% confidence level.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The Standard Model is the best current description of fundamental interactions and particles; however, the Standard Model has certain shortcomings which have driven particle physicists for the last 30 years to search for phenomena which provide evidence for the next theory beyond the Standard Model. To this end, using the BaBar detector, we search for evidence of the rare decay D* -> D0[pi];D0->[gamma][gamma]. The branching fraction of this decay is enhanced up to 200 times the standard model prediction in certain beyond-the-Standard-Model theories. A measurement of a significant branching fraction would provide evidence for a new theory of particle physics. We describe our search for this rare decay and an improved measurement of the associated decay, B(D0-> [pi]0 [pi]0) using an integrated luminosity corresponding to 470.5 fb−1 of e e− data collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric ee− collider at SLAC from 1999-2007. We place an upper limit of B(D0->[gamma][gamma]) 2.51 X 10−6 at 90% confidence level and find B(D0-[pi]0[pi]0) = (8.4 " 0.1 " 0.4 " 0.3) X 10−4.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the search for KL 2![pi]0[pi]0[mu]+[mu]-, which was conducted using data collected by the KTeV Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. Although this decay mode is possible within the Standard Model, it is limited to a very narrow band of phase space. The HyperCP Experiment has recently observed three [Sigma]+ 2!p[mu]+[mu]- events within a narrow dimuon mass range of 213.8 MeV/c2 to 214.8 MeV/c2. This suggests that the process could occur via a neutral intermediary particle, [Sigma]+ 2!pX0 2!p[mu]+[mu]-, with an X0 mass of 214.3 MeV/c2 ± 0.5 MeV/c2 . Since the X0 has a light mass and a low interaction probability, then it is most likely a new neutral boson that exists beyond the Standard Model. Recent theoretical predictions suggest that the decay mode KL 2![pi]0[pi]0[mu]+[mu]- can also occur via the aforementioned neutral boson: KL 2![pi]0[pi]0X02![pi]0[pi]0[mu]+[mu]-. Therefore, in addition to a Standard Model measurement, the search for KL 2![pi]0[pi]0[mu]+[mu]- is also carried out in an effort to address the viability of X0 in explaining the HyperCP phenomena. Measurement of the upper limits presented in this thesis were performed using blind analysis techniques. The upper limit of the decay KL 2![pi]0[pi]0[mu]+[mu]- has been measured in this thesis to be BR(KL 2![pi]0[pi]0[mu]+[mu]- )

Book Study of the Rare Decay K L Pi0 Gamma Gamma at KTeV

Download or read book Study of the Rare Decay K L Pi0 Gamma Gamma at KTeV written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors study on the rare decay K{sub L} 2![pi]°[gamma][gamma], measure a{sub V}, and branching ratio by analyzing 96, 97 and 99 data. The measurements were taken by KTeV at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. After all cuts, they have 1982 K{sub L} 2![pi]°[gamma][gamma] candidate. The background level is estimated as 30%. K{sub L} 2![pi]°[gamma][gamma] branching ratio is measured as (1.29 ± 0.03(stat) ± 0.04(sys)) x 10−6. By using D'Ambrosio's theory to fit a{sub V}, a{sub V} = -( -0.31 ± 0.05(stat) ± 0.07(sys)).

The analysis used a data sample comprised of approximately 252 million B{bar B} pairs collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance. No signal was observed and a 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction was set at 1.32 x 10{sup -6}.

Book A Search for the Rare Decay Mu E Gamma Gamma

Download or read book A Search for the Rare Decay Mu E Gamma Gamma written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental search for the lepton-family number nonconserving decay, .mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma., has been conducted at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) using the Crystal Box detector. The detector consists of a modular NaI(Tl) calorimeter, scintillator hodoscope, and a high-resolution, cylindrical drift chamber. It provides a large solid-angle for detecting three-body decays and has good resolutions in the time, position, and energy measurements to eliminate unwanted backgrounds. No evidence for .mu.+ .-->. e+.gamma gamma. is found, giving an upper limit for the branching ratio of GAMMA(.mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma.)/GAMMA(.mu. .-->. e nu anti nu) less than or equal to 7.2 x 10−11 (90% C.L.). This result is an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude in the existing limit. 109 refs., 39 figs.
