This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have used the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) to search for the flavor-changing neutral-current (FCNC) top quark decay t → Zc using a technique employing ratios of W and Z production, measured in p{bar p} data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.52 fb−1. The analysis uses a comparison of two decay chains, p{bar p} → t{bar t} → WbWb → l[nu]bjjb and p{bar p} → t{bar t} → ZcWb → llcjjb, to cancel systematic uncertainties in acceptance, efficiency, and luminosity. We validate the modeling of acceptance and efficiency for lepton identification over the multi-year dataset using another ratio of W and Z production, in this case the observed ratio of inclusive production of W to Z bosons. To improve the discrimination against standard model backgrounds to top quark decays, we calculate the top quark mass for each event with two leptons and four jets assuming it is a t{bar t} event with one of the top quarks decaying to Zc. For additional background discrimination we require at least one jet to be identified as originating from a b-quark. No significant signal is found and we set an upper limit on the FCNC branching ratio Br(t → Zc) using a likelihood constructed from the llcjjb top quark mass distribution and the number of l[nu]bjjb events. Limits are set as a function of the helicity of the Z boson produced in the FCNC decay. For 100% longitudinally polarized Z bosons we find limits of 8.3% and 9.3% (95% C.L.) depending on the assumptions regarding the theoretical top quark pair production cross-section.

Book excerpt: We have used the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF-II) to set upper limits on the branching ratio of the flavor-changing neutral-current (FCNC) top quark decay t 2!Zc using a technique employing ratios of W and Z production, measured in 1.52 fb−1 of p{bar p} data. The analysis uses a comparison of two decay chains, p{bar p} 2!t{bar t} 2!WbWb 2!l[nu]bjjb and p{bar p} 2!t{bar t} ZcWb 2!ll− cjjb, to cancel systematic uncertainties in acceptance, efficiency, and luminosity. We validate the MC modeling of acceptance and efficiency for lepton identification over the multi-year dataset also using a ratio of W and Z production, in this case the observed ratio of inclusive production of W to Z-bosons, a technique that will be essential for precision comparisons with the standard model at the LHC. We introduce several methods of determining backgrounds to the W and Z samples. To improve the discrimination against SM backgrounds to top quark decays, we calculate the top mass for each event with two leptons and four jets assuming it is a t{bar t} event with one of the top quarks decaying to Zc. The upper limit on the Br(t 2!Zc) is estimated from a likelihood constructed with the ll− cjjb top mass distribution and the number of l[nu]bjjb events. Limits are set as a function of the helicity of the Z-boson produced in the FCNC decay. For 100%-longitudinally-polarized Z-bosons we find a limit of 8.3% (95% C.L.).

Book Search for Associated Production of a Z Boson with a Single Top Quark and for TZ Flavour changing Interactions in Pp Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Associated Production of a Z Boson with a Single Top Quark and for TZ Flavour changing Interactions in Pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for the production of a single top quark in association with a Z boson is presented, both to identify the expected standard model process and to search for flavour-changing neutral current interactions. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse-femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV. Final states with three leptons (electrons or muons) and at least one jet are investigated. An events yield compatible with tZq standard model production is observed, and the corresponding cross section is measured to be sigma(p p -> t Z q -> l nu b l+ l- q) = 10 +8/-7 fb with a significance of 2.4 standard deviations. No presence of flavour-changing neutral current production of tZq is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the branching fractions of a top quark decaying to a Z boson and an up or a charm quark are found to be B(t -> Z u) 0.022% and B(t - Z c)

Book Search for Single Production of a Heavy Vector like T Quark Decaying to a Higgs Boson and a Top Quark with a Lepton and Jets in the Final State

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for single production of vector-like top quark partners (T) decaying into a Higgs boson and a top quark is performed using data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns. The top quark decay includes an electron or a muon while the Higgs boson decays into a pair of b quarks. No significant excess over standard model backgrounds is observed. Exclusion limits on the product of the production cross section and the branching fraction are derived in the T quark mass range 700 to 1800 GeV. For a mass of 1000 GeV, values of the product of the production cross section and the branching fraction greater than 0.8 and 0.7 pb are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming left- and right-handed coupling of the T quark to standard model particles, respectively. This is the first analysis setting exclusion limits on the cross section of singly produced vector-like T quarks at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.

Book A Search for Flavour Changing Neutral Currents in Top quark Decays in Pp Collision Data Collected with the ATLAS Detector at u221A s

Download or read book A Search for Flavour Changing Neutral Currents in Top quark Decays in Pp Collision Data Collected with the ATLAS Detector at u221A s written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes in top-quark decays by the ATLAS Collaboration is presented. Data collected from pp collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV during 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb−1, were used. A search was performed for top-quark pair-production events, with one top quark decaying through the t → Zq FCNC (q = u, c) channel, and the other through the Standard Model dominant mode t → Wb. Only the decays of the Z boson to charged leptons and leptonic W-boson decays were considered as signal. Consequently, the final-state topology is characterised by the presence of three isolated charged leptons, at least two jets and missing transverse momentum from the undetected neutrino. No evidence for an FCNC signal was found. An upper limit on the t → Zq branching ratio of BR(t → Zq)

Book Search for the Production of the Standard Model Z Boson in Association with W Boson in P Anti p Collisions at 1 96 TeV Center of Mass Energy

Download or read book Search for the Production of the Standard Model Z Boson in Association with W Boson in P Anti p Collisions at 1 96 TeV Center of Mass Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for the production of the Standard Model Z boson in association with a W boson is motivated and discussed. This is performed using 4.3 fb−1 of Tevatron Run II data collected with the CDF detector in (square root)s = 1.96 TeV proton anti-proton collisions. This is a signature-based analysis where the W boson decays semileptonically into a high-P{sub T} electron or muon plus a neutrino, and where the Z boson decays into two b quark jets (b-jets). We increase the signal-to-background ratio by identifying the b-quarks in the jets with a new neural network-based algorithm. Another neural network then uses kinematic information to distinguish WZ to further increase the signal-to-background ratio. Since our sensitivity is still not enough to achieve an observation, we set a 95% Confidence Level upper limit on the product of the WZ production cross section and its branching fraction to the decay products specified above, and express it as a ratio to the theoretical Standard Model prediction. The resulting limit is 3.9 x SM (3.9 x SM expected).

Book Search for Vector like T Quarks Using Events with Oppositely charged Lepton Pairs and Jets in Proton proton Collisions at Centre of mass Energy of 13 TeV with CMS Detector

Download or read book Search for Vector like T Quarks Using Events with Oppositely charged Lepton Pairs and Jets in Proton proton Collisions at Centre of mass Energy of 13 TeV with CMS Detector written by Dalath Rachitha Asanga Mendis and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is performed for heavy vector-like top quark partner (T) with electric charge +2/3 by using proton-proton collision events from Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at a centre- of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1 collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment during 2016. The production of this new hypothetical particle is assumed to be in pairs and strong interaction is responsible for such production mechanism. T quarks can decay to various combinations of third generation quarks and standard model bosons: T → bW, tZ, or tH, and hence the final states consist of pair of opposite-sign leptons consistent with coming from a Z boson and jets. No significant excess has been observed and hence 95% CL upper limits are obtained on TT production cross section by assuming different branching ratios. T quark mass values below 1280 GeV are excluded in case of 100% branching fraction for T → tZ.

Book Search for W Boson with Boosted and Hadronic Top quark Final State in Pp Collisions at 8 s

Download or read book Search for W Boson with Boosted and Hadronic Top quark Final State in Pp Collisions at 8 s written by Kuan-Yu Lin and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the LHC proton-proton collision data at an energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector, this analysis searches for the production of a new particle W' with a yet-to-be-probed mass in the top quark plus bottom quark decay channel. The boosted and hadronically decaying top-quark is reconstructed as a large-radius jet and identified using jet substructures. A secondary-vertex finding algorithm identifies small-radius jets originating from a bottom quark. After the identification stage, the main background events come from the Quantum Chromodynamical production of multi-jet, which is estimated by a data-driven approach. The statistical data analysis searches for a resonant peak in the invariant mass distribution of the system with a jet associated with the top quark and another with the bottom quark. The consistency between data and the background prediction is found in the invariant mass range between 1 TeV to 7 TeV, and an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the production cross-section times branching ratio for a W' boson with right-handed chirality decaying to a top quark and a bottom quark. A lower limit on the W' mass is set at 4.4 TeV accordingly.

Download or read book Search for Vector like T Quarks Decaying to Top Quarks and Higgs Bosons in the All hadronic Channel Using Jet Substructure written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We performed a search for a vector-like heavy T quark that is produced in pairs and that decays to a top quark and a Higgs boson. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV. For T quarks with large mass values the top quarks and Higgs bosons can have significant Lorentz boosts, so that their individual decay products often overlap and merge. Methods are applied to resolve the substructure of such merged jets. We also derived upper limits on the production cross section of a T quark with mass between 500 and 1000 GeV/c 2. If the T quark decays exclusively to tH, the observed (expected) lower limit on the mass of the T quark is 745 (773) GeV/c 2 at 95% confidence level. For the first time an algorithm is used for tagging boosted Higgs bosons that is based on a combination of jet substructure information and b tagging.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search with the ATLAS detector for the pair production of a new b' quark in the Z boson plus b quark decay channel is reported. The pp collision data comprise 4.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2011. This search complements recent searches for a b' decaying to a W boson and a top quark, and it is particularly important for new physics models containing vector-like quarks. From events containing both a Z boson reconstructed from electrons and a b tagged jet, any potential signal is enriched by selecting a subsample with large b' candidate pT. No evidence for a b' signal is found in this subsample; the invariant mass spectrum of the b' candidate agrees well with the Standard Model prediction. For the case of a b' that decays only to Z + b, masses mb'

Book Review of W and Z Production at the Tevatron

Download or read book Review of W and Z Production at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CDF and D0 collaborations have used recent data taken at the Tevatron to perform QCD tests with W and Z bosons decaying leptonically. D0 measures the production cross section times branching ratio for W and Z bosons. This also gives an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: [Lambda][sub W] = 2.126 [+-] 0.092 GeV. CDF reports on a direct measurement of [Lambda][sub W] = 2.19 [+-] 0.19 GeV, in good agreement with the indirect determination and Standard Model predictions. D0's measurement of the differential d[sigma]/dp[sub T] distribution for W and Z bosons decaying to electrons agrees with the combined QCD perturbative and resummation calculations. In addition, the d[sigma]/dp[sub T] distribution for the Z boson discriminates between different vector boson production models. Studies of W + Jet production at CDF find the NLO QCD prediction for the production rate of W + [ge] 1 Jet events to be in good agreement with the data.
