Book Search for Single Top Quark Production in Pbar P Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Single Top Quark Production in Pbar P Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report a search for single top quark production with the CDF II detector using 2.1 fb−1 of integrated luminosity of p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. The data selected consist of events characterized by large energy imbalance in the transverse plane and hadronic jets, and no identified electrons and muons, so the sample is enriched in W → [tau][nu] decays. In order to suppress backgrounds, additional kinematic and topological requirements are imposed through a neural network, and at least one of the jets must be identified as a b quark jet. We measure an excess of signal-like events in agreement with the standard model prediction, but inconsistent with a model without single top quark production by 2.1 standard deviations ([sigma]), with a median expected sensitivity of 1.4 [sigma]. Assuming a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c2 and ascribing the excess to single top quark production, the cross section is measured to be 4.9{sub -2.2}{sup +2.5} (stat+syst) pb, consistent with measurements performed in independent datasets and with the standard model prediction.

Book Search for Scalar Top Quark Production in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Scalar Top Quark Production in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on a search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (scalar top) decaying into a charm quark and a neutralino in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. The data sample, collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 fb−1. Candidate events are selected by requiring two or more jets and a large imbalance in the transverse momentum. To enhance the analysis sensitivity, at least one of the jets is required to be identified as originating from a charm quark using an algorithm specifically designed for this analysis. The selected events are in good agreement with standard model predictions. In the case of large mass splitting between the scalar top quark and the neutralino we exclude a scalar top quark mass below 180 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.

Book Search for S Channel Single Top Quark Production in Pp Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for S Channel Single Top Quark Production in Pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is presented for single top quark production in the s channel in proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in decay modes of the top quark containing a muon or an electron in the final state. The signal is extracted through a maximum-likelihood fit to the distribution of a multivariate discriminant defined using boosted decision trees to separate the expected signal contribution from background processes. Data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV yield cross sections of 7.1 +/- 8.1 pb and 13.4 +/- 7.3 pb, respectively, and a best fit value of 2.0 +/- 0.9 for the combined ratio of the measured and expected values. The signal significance is 2.5 standard deviations, and the upper limit on the rate relative to the standard model expectation is 4.7 at 95% confidence level.

Book Search for Single Vector like Quarks in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Single Vector like Quarks in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a search for hypothetical vector-like quarks in p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1. We select events with a final state composed of a W or Z boson and a jet consistent with a heavy object decay. We observe no significant excess in comparison to the background prediction and set limits on production cross sections for vector-like quarks decaying to W+jet and Z+jet. Assuming a vector-like quark to standard model quark coupling parameter {tilde {kappa}}{sub qQ} of unity, we exclude vector-like quarks with mass below 693 GeV for decays to W+jet and mass below 449 GeV for decays to Z+jet. These are the most stringent mass limits for electroweak single vector-like quark production at hadron colliders.

Book Observation of Single Top Quark Production

Download or read book Observation of Single Top Quark Production written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author reports on the observation of electroweak production of single top quarks in p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 Tev using 2.3 fb−1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the fermilab Tevatron Collider. Using events containing an isolated electron or muon, missing transverse energy, two, three or four jets, with one or two of them identified as originating from the fragmentation of a b quark, the measured cross section for the process p{bar p} --> tb + X, tqb + X is 3.94 ± 0.88 pb (for a top quark mass of 170 GeV). the probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of signal is 2.5 x 10−7, corresponding to a 5.0 standard deviation significance. Using the same dataset, the measured cross sections for the t- and the s-channel processes when determined simultaneously with no assumption on their relative production rate are 3.14{sub -0.80}{sup +0.94} pb and 1.05 ± 0.81 pb respectively, consistent with standard model expectations. The measured t-channel cross section has a significance of 4.8 standard deviations, representing the first evidence for the production of an individual single top process to be detected.

Book Search for Same sign Top quark Pair Production at Sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Same sign Top quark Pair Production at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inclusive search for same-sign top-quark pair production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is performed using a data sample recorded with the CMS detector in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 inverse picobarns. This analysis is motivated by recent studies of p p-bar to t t-bar reporting mass-dependent forward-backward asymmetries larger than expected from the standard model. These asymmetries could be due to Flavor Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC) in the top sector induced by t-channel exchange of a massive neutral vector boson (Z'). Models with such a Z' also predict enhancement of same-sign top-pair production in pp or p p-bar collisions. Limits are set as a function of the Z' mass and its couplings to u and t quarks. These limits disfavour the FCNC interpretation of the Tevatron results.

Book Measurement of the T Channel Single Top Quark Production Cross Section in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Measurement of the T Channel Single Top Quark Production Cross Section in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electroweak production of the top quark is measured in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using a dataset collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. With an event selection optimized for t-channel production, two complementary analyses are performed. The first one exploits the special angular properties of the signal, together with background estimates from data. The second approach uses a multivariate analysis technique to probe the compatibility with signal topology expected from electroweak top quark production. The combined measurement of the cross section is 83.6 +/- 29.8 (stat.+syst.) +/- 3.3 (lumi.) pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.

The resulting 95% confidence level upper limits on the single top quark production cross sections are 6.4 pb in the s-channel and 5.0 pb in the t-channel.

Book Model independent Measurement of boldsymbol t channel Single Top Quark Production in boldsymbol p bar p Collisions at boldsymbol sqrt s

Download or read book Model independent Measurement of boldsymbol t channel Single Top Quark Production in boldsymbol p bar p Collisions at boldsymbol sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a model-independent measurement of t-channel electroweak production of single top quarks in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. Using 5.4 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and selecting events containing an isolated electron or muon, missing transverse energy and one or two jets originating from the fragmentation of b quarks, we measure a cross section [sigma](p{bar p} → tqb + X) = 2.90 ± 0.59 (stat + syst) pb for a top quark mass of 172.5 GeV. The probability of the background to fluctuate and produce a signal as large as the one observed is 1.6 x 10−8, corresponding to a significance of 5.5 standard deviations.

Book Search for T Channel Single Top Quark Production in P bar p Collisions at 1 96 TeV

Download or read book Search for T Channel Single Top Quark Production in P bar p Collisions at 1 96 TeV written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have performed a search for t-channel single top quark production in p$ar{p}$ single number sub collisions at 1.96 TeV on a 366 pb-1 dataset collected with the D0 detector from 2002-2005. The analysis is restricted to the leptonic decay of the W boson from the top quark to an electron or muon, tq$ar{b}$ → lvlb q$ar{b}$ (l = e,?). A powerful b-quark tagging algorithm derived from neural networks is used to identify b jets and significantly reduce background. I further use neural networks to discriminate signal from background, and apply a binned likelihood calculation to the neural network output distributions to derive the final limits. No direct observation of single top quark production has been made, and I report expected/measured 95% confidence level limits of 3.5/8.0 pb.

Book Results on Top Quark Production from

Download or read book Results on Top Quark Production from written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The D{O} Collaboration reports on a search for the Standard Model top quark in p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 50 pb−1. We have searched for t{bar t} production in the dilepton and single lepton channels with and without tagging of b quark jets. We observe 17 events with an expected background of 3.8 " 0.6 events. The probability for an upward, fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2 x 10−6 (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent with top quark decay. We conclude that we have observed the top quark and measure its mass to be 19921{sup +19}(stat.)"22 (syst.) GeV/c2 and its production cross section to be 6.4 " 2.2 pb.

Book Discovery of Single Top Quark Production

Download or read book Discovery of Single Top Quark Production written by Dag Gillberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-22 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The top quark is by far the heaviest known fundamental particle with a mass nearing that of a gold atom. Because of this strikingly high mass, the top quark has several unique properties and might play an important role in electroweak symmetry breaking—the mechanism that gives all elementary particles mass. Creating top quarks requires access to very high energy collisions, and at present only the Tevatron collider at Fermilab is capable of reaching these energies. Until now, top quarks have only been observed produced in pairs via the strong interaction. At hadron colliders, it should also be possible to produce single top quarks via the electroweak interaction. Studies of single top quark production provide opportunities to measure the top quark spin, how top quarks mix with other quarks, and to look for new physics beyond the standard model. Because of these interesting properties, scientists have been looking for single top quarks for more than 15 years. This thesis presents the first discovery of single top quark production. It documents one of the flagship measurements of the D0 experiment, a collaboration of more than 600 physicists from around the world. It describes first observation of a physical process known as “single top quark production”, which had been sought for more than 10 years before its eventual discovery in 2009. Further, his thesis describes, in detail, the innovative approach Dr. Gillberg took to this analysis. Through the use of Boosted Decision Trees, a machine-learning technique, he observed the tiny single top signal within an otherwise overwhelming background. This Doctoral Thesis has been accepted by Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, Canada.

Book Search for a Heavy Particle Decaying to a Top Quark and a Light Quark in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for a Heavy Particle Decaying to a Top Quark and a Light Quark in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a search for a new heavy particle M produced in association with a top quark, p{bar p} → t(M → {bar t}q) or p{bar p} → {bar t}({bar M} → t{bar q}), where q stands for up quarks and down quarks. Such a particle may explain the recent anomalous measurements of top-quark forward-backward asymmetry. If the light-flavor quark (q) is reconstructed as a jet (j), this gives a {bar t}+j or t+j resonance in t{bar t}+jet events, a previously unexplored experimental signature. In a sample of events with exactly one lepton, missing transverse momentum and at least five jets, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb−1 collected by the CDF II detector, we find the data to be consistent with the standard model. We set cross-section upper limits on the production (p{bar p} → Mt or {bar M} {bar t}) at 95% confidence level from 0.61 pb to 0.02 pb for M masses ranging from 200 GeV/c2 to 800 GeV/c2, respectively.

Book Search for S channel Single Top quark Production in Proton proton Collisions at arrow

Download or read book Search for S channel Single Top quark Production in Proton proton Collisions at arrow written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Letter presents a search at the LHC for s-channel single top-quark production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The analyzed data set was recorded by the ATLAS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1. The selected events contain one charged lepton, large missing transverse momentum and exactly two b-tagged jets. A multivariate event classifier based on boosted decision trees is developed to discriminate s-channel single top-quark events from the main background contributions. The signal extraction is based on a binned maximum-likelihood fit of the output classifier distribution. The analysis leads to an upper limit on the s-channel single top-quark production cross-section of 14.6 pb at the 95% confidence level. The fit gives a cross-section of [sigma]s=5.0 " 4.3 pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation.
