The first analysis presented is a search for heavy new particles that decay into pairs of hadronic jets (dijets). This pioneering analysis explores unprecedented dijet invariant masses, reaching nearly 7 TeV, and sets constraints on several important new physics models. The two subsequent analyses focus on the difficult low dijet mass region, down to 200 GeV, and employ a novel technique to efficiently gather low-mass dijet events. The results of these analyses transcend the long-standing constraints on dark matter mediator particles set by several existing experiments.

Book excerpt: Hadronic jets play a vital role in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model at particle colliders. Jets are the most commonly produced collision products at hadron colliders like the LHC, and thus represent an extremely promising avenue for discovery. While this prevalence allows for Standard Model processes to be measured to extreme precision and exciting new physics to be searched for, analysis using jets comes with many challenges. The high rate of collision events that produce jets naturally leads to a large background that must be sorted through so that the most interesting events may be identified and recorded. This requires robust jet reconstruction, calibration, and triggering in order to maximize the amount of interesting jet events that can be analyzed for potential new discoveries. In this thesis, an analysis of the performance of the ATLAS jet trigger system during CERN LHC Run 2 is presented. Jet Trigger efficiency curves are analyzed for the full suite of HLT triggers from each year of Run 2 data collection, with differences in run conditions from year to year reviewed and their impacts on jet trigger efficiency analyzed. The effects of an improved jet calibration scheme implemented midway through Run 2 on jet trigger efficiencies and the fraction of recorded fully efficient data that is most useful for further physics analysis are investigated. Additionally, a search for new physics using dijet events at the trigger level is presented. Results of a partial Run 2 analysis using data collected through 2016 are presented and contributions to an upcoming full Run 2 analysis are discussed.

Book excerpt: Jets are identified and their properties studied, in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energy √s = 7 TeV, using charged particles measured by the ATLAS Inner Detector. Events are selected using a minimum bias trigger, allowing jets at very low transverse momentum to be observed and the tran- sition to high-momentum fully perturbative jets to be studied. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm applied to charged particles with two radius parameter choices, 0.4 and 0.6. An inclusive charged jet transverse momentum cross section measurement from 4 GeV to 100 GeV is shown, for four ranges in rapidity extending to 1.9, and corrected to charged particle-level truth jets. The transverse momenta and longitudinal momentum fractions of charged particles within jets are measured, along with the charged particle multiplicity and the particle density as a function of radial distance from the jet axis. Comparison of the data with the theoretical models implemented in existing tunings of Monte Carlo event generators indicates reasonable overall agreement between data and Monte Carlo. These comparisons are sensitive to Monte Carlo parton showering, hadronization, and soft physics models.

This apparatus is built to test the predictions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, including the existence and properties of the Higgs boson. As a proton-proton collider, quarks and gluons are produced in abundance, which quickly fragment and hadronize into collimated showers of energy called jets. These jets are detected and measured in the ATLAS detector, which is built around the point of the proton-proton collisions to observe the products of these interactions. Three major original research efforts are presented using data from proton-proton collisions observed in ATLAS. The first analyzes events with jets and photons to search for a beyond-the-Standard-Model decay of the Higgs boson. The second utilizes novel techniques in weak supervision to perform a generic data-driven resonance search in events with two jets. The third formalizes the calibration of the jet energies observed in the ATLAS detector, and further proposes a new method to improve this calibration with machine learning. The work presented here addresses some of the key questions in particle physics today. By searching for new physics, it is possible to shed light on the nature of the Higgs boson and the possibility of physics beyond the Standard Model. These searches focus on processes involving multiple jets in the final state, which motivates innovations in the reconstruction of jet energies. In addition to setting new bounds on theoretically interesting models, the innovations in object reconstruction and analysis techniques developed in this work can be applied in other ATLAS efforts using currently available data or data gathered in the future.
