These neutrinos come primarily from the decay of pions and muons produced in cosmic ray showers in the earths̀ atmosphere. The expected flux ratio of muon neutrinos to electron neutrinos traversing an underground detector,??/?{sub e}, is about 2. The combined effects of detector systematics and nuclear cross section differences between?{sub mu} and?{sub e} interactions typically reduce the measured?{sub mu}/?3 event ratio to about 1. Over the last decade, both the Kamioka detector in Japan and the IMB detector in the United States have made high-statistics measurements of the atmospheric neutrino event ratio. Both groups have presented strong experimental evidence that the underground?{sub mu}/?{sub e} event ratio is substantially smaller than predicted. In both cases, a statistically significant deficit of muon neutrino-induced events is measured. One possible explanation of the muon neutrino deficit is that these neutrinos are undergoing flavor oscillations between their production points in the atmosphere and their interaction points in underground detectors. An MSW effect interpretation of solar neutrino experiments implies a?{sub e} →?{sub mu} oscillation region in?m2-sin2(2?) space at least two orders of magnitude lower in?m2 than the best fit point of the Kamioka result. It is therefore usually assumed that the relevant flavor oscillation for atmospheric muon neutrinos would be?{sub mu} →?{sub r}. The Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector is now approaching completion and collecting data. It will be able to make low-background measurements of atmospheric neutrinos in the next few years to check the possibility that atmospheric neutrinos undergo detectable flavor oscillations.

Book excerpt: The centerpiece of the thesis is the search for muon neutrino to electron neutrino oscillations which would indicate a non-zero mixing angle between the first and third neutrino generations (θ13), currently the “holy grail” of neutrino physics. The optimal extraction of the electron neutrino oscillation signal is based on the novel “library event matching” (LEM) method which Ochoa developed and implemented together with colleagues at Caltech and at Cambridge, which improves MINOS’ (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillator Search) reach for establishing an oscillation signal over any other method. LEM will now be the basis for MINOS’ final results, and will likely keep MINOS at the forefront of this field until it completes its data taking in 2011. Ochoa and his colleagues also developed the successful plan to run MINOS with a beam tuned for antineutrinos, to make a sensitive test of CPT symmetry by comparing the inter-generational mass splitting for neutrinos and antineutrinos. Ochoa’s in-depth, creative approach to the solution of a variety of complex experimental problems is an outstanding example for graduate students and longtime practitioners of experimental physics alike. Some of the most exciting results in this field to emerge in the near future may find their foundations in this thesis.

Neutrinos are similar to the more familiar electron, with one crucial difference: neutrinos do not carry electric charge. Because neutrinos are electrically neutral, they are not affected by the electromagnetic forces which act on electrons. Three types of neutrinos are known. Each type or 'flavour' of neutrino is related to a charged particle (which gives the corresponding neutrino its name). Hence, the 'electron neutrino' is associated with the electron, and two other neutrinos are associated with heavier versions of the electron called the muon and the tau. Further, it presents a new analysis paradigm to enable this measurement and a comprehensive study of the myriad systematic uncertainties involved in a search for a few-percent effect, while also rigorously investigating the statistical interpretation of the findings in the context of a sterile neutrino model. Among the scientific community, this analysis was quickly recognized as a foundational measurement in light of which all previous evidence for the sterile neutrino must now be (re)interpreted. The existence of sterile neutrinos has long been one of the key questions in the field. Not only are they a central component in many theories of new physics, but a number of past experiments have yielded results consistent with their existence. Nonetheless, they remain controversial: the interpretation of the data showing evidence for these sterile neutrinos is hotly debated.
