Download or read book Search for a W Boson Decaying to a Muon and a Neutrino in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new heavy gauge boson, W', decaying to a muon and a neutrino, is searched for in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass of 7 TeV. The data, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. No significant excess of events above the standard model expectation is found in the transverse mass distribution of the muon-neutrino system. Masses below 1.40 TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level for a sequential standard-model-like W'. The W' mass lower limit increases to 1.58 TeV when the present analysis is combined with the CMS result for the electron channel.

Book Neutrinos in High Energy and Astroparticle Physics

Download or read book Neutrinos in High Energy and Astroparticle Physics written by Jose Wagner Furtado Valle and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This self-contained modern textbook provides a modern description of the Standard Model and its main extensions from the perspective of neutrino physics. In particular it includes a thorough discussion of the varieties of seesaw mechanism, with or without supersymmetry. It also discusses schemes where neutrino mass arises from lighter messengers, which might lie within reach of the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider. Throughout the text, the book stresses the role of neutrinos due to the fact that neutrino properties may serve as a guide to the correct model of unification, hence for a deeper understanding of high energy physics, and because neutrinos play an important role in astroparticle physics and cosmology. Each chapter includes summaries and set of problems, as well as further reading.

Book Search for W Decaying to Tau Lepton and Neutrino in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for W Decaying to Tau Lepton and Neutrino in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We found that the first search for a heavy charged vector boson in the final state with a tau lepton and a neutrino is reported, using 19.7 fb-1 of LHC data at √s = 8 TeV. A signal would appear as an excess of events in kinematic regions where the standard model background is low. No excess is observed. Limits are set on a model in which the W' decays preferentially to fermions of the third generation. Our results substantially extend previous constraints on this model. Masses below 2.0 to 2.7 TeV are excluded, depending on the model parameters. In addition, the existence of a W' boson with universal fermion couplings is excluded at 95% confidence level, for W' masses below 2.7 TeV.

Book A Search for a Heavy Majorana Neutrino at ATLAS Using 4 7 Fb 1 of Pp Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book A Search for a Heavy Majorana Neutrino at ATLAS Using 4 7 Fb 1 of Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by John Leslie Almond and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of neutrino oscillations provides evidence that the Standard Model neutrinos have mass. Many models generate the mass for the light neutrinos by postulating the existence of heavy neutrinos. This thesis presents the search for a heavy Majorana neutrino decaying into a W boson and a muon that was performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is performed using final states with two same-sign muons, two or more high momentum jets and low missing transverse energy. The events are required to pass the ATLAS muon trigger and the improvements made in the muon trigger algorithms are also presented. The data used in this thesis were collected using pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb-1. In the search no excess of events above the background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio for the production of heavy Majorana neutrinos. Limits are set for heavy Majorana neutrinos with masses ranging from 100 to 300 GeV, in which the observed limits range between 28 to 3.4 fb. These are most stringent direct limits to date for heavy neutrino masses larger than 100 GeV.

Book Search for W prime Boson Decaying to Electron neutrino Pairs in P Anti p Collisions at S

Download or read book Search for W prime Boson Decaying to Electron neutrino Pairs in P Anti p Collisions at S written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present the results of a search for W′ boson decaying to electron-neutrino pairs in p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using a data sample corresponding to 205 pb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab. They observe no evidence for this decay mode and set limits on the production cross section times branching fraction, assuming the neutrinos from W′ boson decays to be light. If they assume the manifest left-right symmetric model, they exclude a W′ boson with mass less than 788 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level.

Book Search for the Production of the Standard Model Z Boson in Association with W Boson in P Anti p Collisions at 1 96 TeV Center of Mass Energy

Download or read book Search for the Production of the Standard Model Z Boson in Association with W Boson in P Anti p Collisions at 1 96 TeV Center of Mass Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for the production of the Standard Model Z boson in association with a W boson is motivated and discussed. This is performed using 4.3 fb−1 of Tevatron Run II data collected with the CDF detector in (square root)s = 1.96 TeV proton anti-proton collisions. This is a signature-based analysis where the W boson decays semileptonically into a high-P{sub T} electron or muon plus a neutrino, and where the Z boson decays into two b quark jets (b-jets). We increase the signal-to-background ratio by identifying the b-quarks in the jets with a new neural network-based algorithm. Another neural network then uses kinematic information to distinguish WZ to further increase the signal-to-background ratio. Since our sensitivity is still not enough to achieve an observation, we set a 95% Confidence Level upper limit on the product of the WZ production cross section and its branching fraction to the decay products specified above, and express it as a ratio to the theoretical Standard Model prediction. The resulting limit is 3.9 x SM (3.9 x SM expected).

Book Search for Weakly interacting Long lived Particles that Decay to Displaced Hadronic Jets in Proton proton Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Weakly interacting Long lived Particles that Decay to Displaced Hadronic Jets in Proton proton Collisions at Sqrt s written by Daniel Blackburn and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is presented for the decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson or another scalar boson to a pair of weakly-interacting, long-lived particles in 20.3 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV recorded in 2012 by the ATLAS detector. The strategy requires that one of the long-lived particles decay inside the muon spectrometer. The second long-lived particle is required to decay in the inner detector or the muon spectrometer. No excess of events is observed above the expected background. Limits are derived on the scalar boson's production cross section times branching ratio as a function of the long-lived particle's proper decay length.

The W boson differential cross sections, lepton charge asymmetry, and forward–backward asymmetries are measured for leptons of transverse momentum exceeding 25 GeV/c , and as a function of the lepton pseudorapidity in the.

Book Search for New Resonances Decaying Via WZ to Leptons in Proton u2013 proton Collisions at sqrt S

Download or read book Search for New Resonances Decaying Via WZ to Leptons in Proton u2013 proton Collisions at sqrt S written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is performed in proton–proton collisions at √s=8 TeV for exotic particles decaying via WZ to fully leptonic final states with electrons, muons, and neutrinos. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb-1. No significant excess is observed above the expected standard model background. Upper bounds at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section of a W' boson as predicted by an extended gauge model, and on the W'WZ coupling. The expected and observed mass limits for a W' boson, as predicted by this model, are 1.55 and 1.47 TeV, respectively. Stringent limits are also set in the context of low-scale technicolor models under a range of assumptions for the model parameters.

Book Search for W to Tb in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for W to Tb in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is performed for the production of a massive W' boson decaying to a top and a bottom quark. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{{u2013}1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV. The hadronic decay products of the top quark with high Lorentz boost from the W' boson decay are detected as a single top flavoured jet. The use of jet substructure algorithms allows the top quark jet to be distinguished from standard model QCD background. Limits on the production cross section of a right-handed W' boson are obtained, together with constraints on the left-handed and right-handed couplings of the W' boson to quarks. The production of a right-handed W' boson with a mass below 2.02 TeV decaying to a hadronic final state is excluded at 95% confidence level. Furthermore, this mass limit increases to 2.15 TeV when both hadronic and leptonic decays are considered, and is the most stringent lower mass limit to date in the tb decay mode.
