Book Heavy Neutral Particle Decays to Tau Pairs

Download or read book Heavy Neutral Particle Decays to Tau Pairs written by Michail Bachtis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis spans a wide range of experimental particle physics subjects, starting from level-1 trigger electronics to the final results of the search for Higgs boson decay and to tau lepton pairs. The thesis describes an innovative reconstruction algorithm for tau decays and details how it was instrumental in providing a measurement of Z decay to tau lepton pairs. The reliability of the analysis is fully established by this measurement before the Higgs boson decay to tau lepton pairs is considered. The work described here continues to serve as a model for analysing CMS Higgs to tau leptons measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a [tau tau] pair using CMS data recorded at the LHC with 7 TeV and 8 TeV center of mass energy during 2011 and 2012 respectively. The search is performed using two channels [tau mu tau eta] and [tau epsilon tau eta] where [tau epsilon, tau mu] represent a [tau] decay to an electron or muon and [tau eta] represents a [tau] decay to hadron(s). The search is performed in the range 100 GeV

Book Search for Neutral Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model Higgs Bosons Decaying to Tau Pairs in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Neutral Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model Higgs Bosons Decaying to Tau Pairs in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons in pp collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns recorded by the CMS experiment. The search uses decays of the Higgs bosons to tau pairs. No excess is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum. The resulting upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to tau pairs, as a function of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson mass, yield stringent new bounds in the MSSM parameter space.

Book Evidence for a Higgs Boson in Tau Decays with the CMS Detector

Download or read book Evidence for a Higgs Boson in Tau Decays with the CMS Detector written by Valentina Dutta and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, I describe the search for a Higgs boson through its decay to a pair of tan leptons with the tau-pair subsequently decaying to ail electron, a muon, and neutrinos. The search is performed using data collected from proton-proton collisions by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to 5.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 fb-1 at 8 TeV. The expected significance for a Standard Model Higgs boson signal with a mass of 125 GeV is at the level of 1.2 standard deviations for the electron muon tau-pair decay mode. A mild excess of events is seen above the SM background expectation in this decay mode, consistent with a SM Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV. In combination with results using other tau-pair decay modes, an excess of events above the background expectation is seen at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. This constitutes the first evidence for a Higgs boson to decay to leptons. This thesis also describes an analysis of the data in the context of physics beyond the Standard Model, particularly in the framework of its Minimal Supersymnnetric extension.

Book Measurement of W Bb and a Search for MSSM Higgs Bosons with the CMS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book Measurement of W Bb and a Search for MSSM Higgs Bosons with the CMS Detector at the LHC written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a Standard Model (SM) cross section measurement of W+bb as well as a search for neutral Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) decaying to tau pairs. The measurement of W+bb was performed using proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in a data sample collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 1/fb. The W+bb events are selected in the W to muon + neutrino decay mode by requiring a muon with transverse momentum pT>25 GeV and pseudorapidity absolute eta less than 2.1, and exactly two b-tagged jets with pT>25 GeV and absolute eta less than 2.4. The measured W+bb production cross section in the fiducial region, calculated at the level of final-state particles, is 0.53± 0.05(stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.) ± 0.06 (theory) ± 0.01 (lum.) pb, in agreement with the SM prediction. This measurement is a sensitive test of heavy quark production calculated with perturbative QCD. It also serves as an important benchmark in new physics searches which include a single isolated lepton and one or more b jets in the final state, as W+bb becomes an irreducible background. Also presented is a search for the CP-even MSSM Higgs bosons, H and h, and the CP-odd MSSM pseudoscalar, A, in their decays to tau pairs. This search is performed using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012 at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 8 TeV respectively. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 24.6 1/fb, with 4.9 1/fb at 7 TeV and 19.7 1/fb at 8 TeV. To enhance the sensitivity to neutral MSSM Higgs bosons, the search includes the case where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a b-quark jet. No excess is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum.

Book Evidence for the 125 GeV Higgs Boson Decaying to a Pair of tau Leptons

Download or read book Evidence for the 125 GeV Higgs Boson Decaying to a Pair of tau Leptons written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for a standard model Higgs boson decaying into a pair of tau leptons is performed using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 inverse femtobarns at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 inverse femtobarns at 8 TeV. Each tau lepton decays hadronically or leptonically to an electron or a muon, leading to six different final states for the tau-lepton pair, all considered in this analysis. An excess of events is observed over the expected background contributions, with a local significance larger than 3 standard deviations for m[H] values between 115 and 130 GeV. The best fit of the observed H to tau tau signal cross section for m[H] = 125 GeV is 0.78 +- 0.27 times the standard model expectation. These observations constitute evidence for the 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying to a pair of tau leptons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating tour of particle physics from Nobel Prize winner Leon Lederman. At the root of particle physics is an invincible sense of curiosity. Leon Lederman embraces this spirit of inquiry as he moves from the Greeks' earliest scientific observations to Einstein and beyond to chart this unique arm of scientific study. His survey concludes with the Higgs boson, nicknamed the God Particle, which scientists hypothesize will help unlock the last secrets of the subatomic universe, quarks and all--it's the dogged pursuit of this almost mystical entity that inspires Lederman's witty and accessible history.

Book Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons Decaying to Tau Pairs Produced in Association with b Quarks in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons Decaying to Tau Pairs Produced in Association with b Quarks in p bar p Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report results from a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks using data recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.3 fb−1. This production mode can be enhanced in several extensions of the standard model (SM) such as in its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) at high tan [beta]. We search for Higgs bosons decaying to tau pairs with one tau decaying to a muon and neutrinos and the other to hadrons. The data are found to be consistent with SM expectations, and we set upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio in the Higgs boson mass range from 90 to 320 GeV/c2. We interpret our result in the MSSM parameter space, excluding tan [beta] values down to 25 for Higgs boson masses below 170 GeV/c2.
