Book excerpt: Diffuse (non-point source) pollution is increasingly being recognised as a major source of water quality problems in both surface and ground water. Indeed, as pollution resulting from point sources is reduced by the efforts of regulators, diffuse sources frequently remain as the dominant source of pollution. The book is an introductory text covering the nature, causes and the significance of diffuse pollution of both urban and rural origin. Best management practices to tackle the problems are examined as are the ways in which the adoption of such practices may be brought about. Use is made of case studies from several countries to examine the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches. Diffuse Pollution covers both urban and rural sources. Urban sources include run-off from impermeable surfaces of roads, industrial areas and housing which may be contaminated by hydrocarbons, heavy metals, organic chemicals and other undesirable substances. Rural sources include water containing pollutants arising from agriculture and forestry such as plant nutrients, pesticides, microbes and soil itself. This concise book will prove useful to practitioners in the field of pollution control both in an urban and a rural environment, to regulators, to researchers new to the field, and to academics and students. An extensive reference section aids the reader in exploring the subject further. Contents Diffuse pollution A Best Practice Approach An Introduction to BMPs for built environments Managing diffuse pollution from urban sources - a survey of best practice experience Rural BMPs Rural best practice experience Regulation, Economic instruments, and Education for controlling diffuse pollution Sustainability Full Contents List (439KB)

Book Insects of the Los Angeles Basin

Download or read book Insects of the Los Angeles Basin written by Charles Leonard Hogue and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Southern California is home not only to the country's second largest metropolitan center but to an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 different kinds of insects. Insects of the Los Angeles Basin provides an introduction to more than 400 of the most conspicuous or curious of these invertebrate animals and to about 70 spiders, mites and ticks, and related forms. With color photographs or drawings of all but a few species, the text describes the size and most striking physical characteristics of adults and immature stages and gives information on locomotion and behavior, offensive and defensive maneuvers, mating rituals, food preferences, nests and traps, and noises and scents. The specific habitat and general geographic range of each insect are included, as are lore and superstition regarding some notorious species." "The author, Dr. Charles L. Hogue, has answered the questions that he was most often asked in his position as Curator of Entomology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The result is a highly readable text with an emphasis on the effects that insects have on the people who encounter them."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Water from Stone written by Jason M. O'Donoughue and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the archaeological significance of springs in the St. Johns River Valley of Florida. Archaeologists have long focused on springs' ecological capacities and have failed to recognize the importance of these places to ancient Floridians. Meanwhile, contemporary conservation narratives, rarely informed by archaeological knowledge, rely on a simplistic notion of eternal, pristine springs that likewise downplays their past significance. O'Donoughue develops an alternative approach that foregrounds springs as places of social interaction with deep historical import.
