Book excerpt: The continuous and rapid improvement of tourism around the whole world and the increasing emigration of peoples from the developing countries to the "old continents" have changed the classical image of tropical diseases, which are now seen more frequently in temperate and highly developed countries. Consequently, over 10 years after its first publication, this second edition of the pathology of tropical diseases has been restructured and expanded to reflect the recent developments and changes in diagnostic techniques. A total of 27 chapters - written by 29 reputed experts from 11 countries - cover such new aspects as technological developments in diagnosing infectious diseases, autopsies in the tropics, renal diseases, geomedicine and genetic disorders. A concentrated and up-to-date review of the field.

Book Law Public Policies and Complex Systems Networks in Action

Download or read book Law Public Policies and Complex Systems Networks in Action written by Romain Boulet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how various scientific communities – e.g. legal scientists, political scientists, sociologists, mathematicians, and computer scientists – study law and public policies, which are portrayed here as complex systems. Today, research on law and public policies is rapidly developing at the international level, relying heavily on modeling that employs innovative methods for concrete implementation. Among the subject matter discussed, law as a network of evolving and interactive norms is now a prominent sphere of study. Similarly, public policies are now a topic in their own right, as policy can no longer be examined as a linear process; rather, its study should reflect the complexity of the networks of actors, norms and resources involved, as well as the uncertainty or weak predictability of their direct or indirect impacts. The book is divided into three maain parts: complexity faced by jurists, complexity in action and public policies, and complexity and networks. The main themes examined concern codification, governance, climate change, normative networks, health, water management, use-related conflicts, legal regime conflicts, and the use of indicators.

Book Herbal Insecticides Repellents and Biomedicines Effectiveness and Commercialization

Download or read book Herbal Insecticides Repellents and Biomedicines Effectiveness and Commercialization written by Vijay Veer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-08 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks closely at herbal product development and commercialisation. In spite of an ever-growing demand, there is a dearth of safe and effective herbal products that meet consumers’ expectations. Therefore, this book takes it upon itself to elaborate on the development process of herbal insecticides, repellents and biomedicines from a commercialisation point of view. The introductory chapters deal with the various strategies for disease vector control and provide an overview of herbal biomedicines. The subsequent chapter describes plants with mosquito larvicidal activity, including a comprehensive list of lethal concentrations against different mosquito species. The chapter on Himalayan plants discusses potential botanical insecticide sources and their chemical constituents before delving into the topic of natural insecticides of microbial origin and their efficacy against mosquitoes. Plant-derived insecticides belonging to different chemical classes and the extraction, purification and characterisation of bioactive compounds are illustrated, as well. The recent technological advances in the formulation of microbial, biochemical and botanical insecticides are also reviewed. Three chapters focus on important medicinal plants useful for treating human ailments, with special reference to the traditional healing practices of northeastern India. This is followed by a chapter on the production, use and safety of biopharmaceuticals and edible, plant-based vaccines. The intellectual property issues related to herbal products in India including patents, trademarks, geographical indications, trade secrets and traditional knowledge resources are plainly examined. The book ends with a chapter on the herbal product registration process in India, wherein the data requirements for registration, clinical efficacy trials, toxicity studies, quality control, packaging and labelling are clearly explained. In conclusion, this book is a step-by-step guide for the development of safe, effective and commercially viable herbal insecticides, repellents and biomedicines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia is a region where a myriad of infections are endemic. It is a hotspot region for parasitic diseases. Currently, information on parasitic infections and vectors found in Southeast Asia is sporadic and there has been no attempt to extensively collate and integrate these data. Gaps in our knowledge, which include disease patterns, transmission dynamics and vectors still exist. This book highlights parasitic diseases that are peculiar to Southeast Asia, pinpoints similarities and differences between disease patterns in the respective member countries and provide information on new emerging parasitic diseases in this region. Critically, this book will heighten understanding of parasitic diseases and their vectors in this diverse region and this knowledge will be significant for future regional research efforts in this field.

Book Cases in Field Epidemiology A Global Perspective

Download or read book Cases in Field Epidemiology A Global Perspective written by Dr. Mark S. Dworkin and published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of case studies—some never before published—uncover the details of actual disease outbreaks from within the United States and around the world. At the conclusion of each chapter, the investigator reviews the methods and processes that were employed to execute the investigation. Ideal as a complement to any text on infectious disease epidemiology, these case studies will bring to life the classic functions of field epidemiology and the application of epidemiological methods to unexpected health problems that require fast, on-site investigation and timely intervention. The cases cover investigations in infectious and non-infectious disease outbreaks, as well as environmental health related disease outbreaks.
