Book Seaman s Handbook for Shore Leave Classic Reprint

Download or read book Seaman s Handbook for Shore Leave Classic Reprint written by U. S. Merchant Marine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seaman's Handbook for Shore Leave The first edition of the Seaman's Handbook was published by this Bureau, at that time operating as the Social Service Bureau of the United States Shipping Board, Recruiting Service, to meet a need arising from the enrollment of thousands of men in the American Merchant Marine during the world war emergency. Great interest was shown in the first edition, and the\ favorable comment, which it aroused, coming as it did both from seamen and those who were interested in bet tering conditions for them, strengthened our belief that subsequent editions would be of value and should be issued periodically. Replies to many questionnaires were received too late to be incorporated in the first edition, which was rushed to print in order that the material on hand might be available without undue delay. Since the date of its publication, much valuable information has accumulated, and there has been opportunity to correct and verify a great deal of the original material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Men on Deck: Master, Mates and Crew, Their Duties and Responsibilities; A Manual for the American Merchant Service The American who goes to sea to-day will not content himself with minimum requirements. He means to be more than a ten-per cent seaman. War emergencies have sent many men out on blue water who formerly would never have reached the deck or bridge. They know their limitations all we can do is to point out the way. The Author will welcome suggestions and criticisms from officers and men of the Merchant Marine who happen to read the pages of this book. Standard practice at sea is desirable, and such practice can best be achieved by some common ground upon which all minds may meet and reasonably agree. Letters addressed in care of my publishers, D. Van Nos trand Company, 2 5 Park Place, New York, will be forwarded to me and be appreciated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Manual of Elementary Seamanship Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Elementary Seamanship Classic Reprint written by D. Wilson-Barker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Elementary Seamanship A new Elementary Manual of Seamanship may perhaps appear, at first sight, superfluous. Its production has been decided on by the Author because of his conviction that none of the many excellent works extant sufficiently meet the needs Of Apprentices and Junior Officers in the Mercantile Marine. This little work is an introductory text - book for beginners; it does not pretend to complete their nautical education, nor in any sense to supersede that practical training in the details of their profession, an intimate acquaintance with which is so unattainable, except in the course of life on board ship.
