Book Scottish Sea Kayak Trail

Download or read book Scottish Sea Kayak Trail written by Simon Willis and published by Pesda Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland's west coast is an undisputed world-class sea kayaking destination. This book challenges the reader to kayak a 500km route, from the Isle of Gigha off the Kintyre peninsula, to the Summer Isles near Ullapool. It can be undertaken in four holiday-sized sections or as one long, glorious journey. The emphasis is on practical advice; how to tackle tricky tidal passages; places to visit; where to source essential information; food re- supply; where to safely leave kayaks overnight; how and when to shuttle vehicles; and the accessibility of public transport. Although camping is an essential element of this journey the book does not identify wild camp sites or even picnic places. It gives sea kayakers enough information to seek out their own adventures and so spread the environmental impact. The history of this country is inextricably linked to the west coast, from the Scoti to the Norsemen, the Lords of the Isles to the Clearances. An historical thread, woven through the text, tells 'Scotland's Story'. There are useful photographs and notes to help identify wildlife without disturbance, plus practical recommendations on wild camping, from minimum impact techniques to Scottish access law. For those who travel the trail in the comfort of their armchairs, there's also the story of the author's own journey. Together you will travel under big skies on imposing seas in the company of seals, dolphins, eagles and gulls. The Scottish Sea Kayak Trail is waiting for you.

Book The Ecology of Scotland s Largest Lochs

Download or read book The Ecology of Scotland s Largest Lochs written by Peter S. Maitland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland is fortunate in being very richly endowed with natural fresh waters in the form of numerous lochs and rivers. These constitute on the one hand an attractive feature of the landscape and on the other a major resource for industry and recreation. Thus there are about 3800 lochs over4 ha in area and these form approximately 1.0% of the total surface area of Scotland. Com parable figures for England and Wales are 1700 lakes and 0.05% of the land surface, and in terms of volume. Loch Ness contains more water than all the lakes and reservoirs in England and Wales put together (Smith & Lyle 1979). Many of the Scottish lochs are large and clean and consequently are particularly valuable in resource terms. The decision as to which are actually the largest lochs is debatable, particularly when the main criteria of greatest surface area, length, volume and depth each gives a different water (Lochs Lomond. Awe, Ness and Morar respectively). These four then are certainly among the largest lochs in the country, but close to them in size come several other large waters, among which is Loch Shiel- which is exceeded in length only by Lochs Awe, Ness and Lomond. These five very large lochs (Frontis piece) form the group of waters selected for the comparative studies described in this volume.
